SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A photo of a Cal State San Marcos graduate is going viral. It shows 29-year-old Erica Alfaro in her cap and gown, standing with her parents, in the middle of a strawberry field in Carlsbad.Her educational journey was anything but easy. “I was a teenage mom,” Alfaro said. She was 15 and pregnant, and became a mother at 16. Alfaro said she dropped out of high school and was stuck in an abusive relationship.“My baby’s father forced me to sleep outside with my baby,” Alfaro said. “That is the night I decided to go back to school.”She left Fresno and returned home to Oceanside. It was then that she remembered a moment from when she was 13-years-old.“My mom took me to work with her in the tomato fields,” Alfaro said. “And I remember she told me, ‘This is our life. The only people who have a good life are the people who have a good education.’”Alfaro was born in Fresno but spent most of her elementary years in Tijuana, Mexico. When she was 13, she and her family moved to Oceanside. Her parents got jobs as farm workers. They never received a formal education. “They don’t know how to read or write,” Alfaro said. All the signs pointed toward her repeating that cycle. But Alfaro was not going to let that happen. “I did it for my son,” she said. Little Luis inspired her to finished high school through homeschool, and enroll in Junior College. The next step was Cal State San Marcos. Statistics show that only 2 percent of teen mothers finish college by the age of 30. But Alfaro pushed forward. “At first I thought I was being unrealistic, but I just started to keep going,” she said. But in 2012, Alfaro got a diagnosis that changed her life once again. “My son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy,” she said. The depression overcame her, and she dropped out of college. But again, she remembered that day at the tomato fields. “I had so many excuses to give up. But giving up was never an option,” Alfaro said. Five years later, she earned her bachelor's degree at CSU San Marcos. On Sunday, as if she has not accomplished enough, Alfaro will receive a Masters in Education from San Diego State University. She hopes to inspire students and her now 13-year-old son, to never give up. “My son represents a new generation,” Alfaro said. “He will have a better future. He will have more opportunities, and I will be there to tell him that it is possible. That he belongs. All those things I never heard myself.” 2454

SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) - James Schwab, a spokesman for the San Francisco Division of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has resigned, citing what he says are falsehoods being spread by members of the Trump administration including Attorney General Jeff Sessions."I just couldn't bear the burden -- continuing on as a representative of the agency and charged with upholding integrity, knowing that information was false," he told CNN on Monday.Schwab cited Acting Director Tom Homan and Attorney General Jeff Sessions as being the purveyors of misleading and inaccurate information, following Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's controversial decision to warn the community of an upcoming ICE raid.ICE released a press release on February 27 about the operations in Northern California in which Homan stated that "864 criminal aliens and public safety threats remain at large in the community, and I have to believe that some of them were able to elude us thanks to the mayor's irresponsible decision."Sessions also repeated a similar estimate in his remarks while visiting Sacramento last week."Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community -- 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue with more difficulty in more dangerous situations, all because of one mayor's irresponsible action," Sessions had said.Schwab said he took issue with their characterization."Director Homan and the Attorney General said there were 800 people at large and free to roam because of the actions of the Oakland Mayor," he told CNN. "Personally I think her actions were misguided and not responsible. I think she could have had other options. But to blame her for 800 dangerous people out there is just false.""It's a false statement because we never pick up 100% of our targets. And to say they're a type of dangerous criminal is also misleading."Schwab said he brought up his concerns to ICE leadership and was told to "deflect to previous statements. (CNS) - Twin brothers popular on YouTube for videos featuring pranks were charged Wednesday with masquerading as bank robbers, prompting emergency calls to Irvine police.Alan and Alex Stokes of Irvine, both 23, were each charged with a felony count of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of false reporting an emergency.The two are accused of pulling off the pranks with a videographer on Oct. 15.At about 2:30 p.m. that day, the twins dressed in black with ski masks and carried duffle bags stuffed with cash, masquerading as bank robbers, according to Kimberly Edds, a spokeswoman for the Orange County District Attorney's Office.With the camera operator in tow, they called for an Uber ride, but the driver refused service, Edds said.A witness believing the pair had robbed a bank and were carjacking the Uber driver called the police, Edds said. Responding officers ordered the driver out at gunpoint, but when they eventually sorted out what happened they let the brothers go with a warning, Edds said.Four hours later, the twins did the same thing on campus at UC Irvine, which prompted emergency calls again, Edds said.A court date has not yet been scheduled and it was unknown if the duo had legal representation. 1254
