CHICAGO, Ill. -- Karate is well-known for teaching discipline, but its focus on core strength, balance and confidence-building could be effective for something else – helping people living with brain disorders such as Parkinson’s. Twice a week, inside a karate dojo in Chicago, students learn the fundamental movements of Kihon technique. “We did something called KoGo Kumite which is partner work, working on rhythm, working on distancing, working on timing and working on technique.” But for Fonseca Martial Arts head instructor Brian Ramrup this is a class like none other he’s taught before. “These guys all have Parkinson's,” said Ramrup. More than 1 million Americans have Parkinson’s disease. The progressive neurological disorder affects balance and movement. Tremors and stiffness are common symptoms, but the disease can also lead to depression and anxiety. For Sonia Vargas, diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005, it started with tingling in her legs. “It felt like I was carrying some piece of some heavy equipment on my legs,” said Vargas. A year ago, on the recommendation of her neurologist, Vargas joined the Chicago-area martial arts academy.“These guys are learning how to go to the ground safely, how to break falls,” said Ramrup. It’s a skill that can help avoid injuries for patients who begin to lose balance and fall frequently. It’s part of a program studying the potential for karate to slow the progression of the disorder. “When I went to the first class, the next day, I felt a difference. It was so remarkable,” said Vargas. Dr. Jori Fleisher is the principal investigator of the study and a neurologist at Rush University Medical Center. She says initial results are promising. “We found clinically significant changes in quality of life which is huge,” said Fleisher. “It's a great exercise covering a lot of the areas: balance, core strength, big large amplitude movements when people are kind of tiny or smaller, stiffer. They're sort of fighting back actively against that.” Camaraderie is also a key component. The group now competes together, cheering for one another on good days and bad. “The exercises help tremendously the competitions. I mean really gets you going. I mean my first competition I got I got the orange belt,” said Vargas. The year-long randomized program concludes next month, and Dr. Fleisher remains cautiously optimistic about the outcome.“I don't think karate will be the end all be all. Justin Paperny has a unique career, one he helped invent after stock fraud landed him in federal prison a decade ago. "I made a lot of bad decisions, including lying to the FBI; I lied to my family, lied to my lawyers,” he says.Now, he's a self-described prison coach, teaching criminals the ropes of prison life. His expertise includes everything from how to get the best job in prison to living "under the radar," and doing it all safely.His clients usually include white collar defendants, doctors, lawyers, executives, he says. However, his new client is one of the major players in the college admission scandal. Paperny starts his work early in the legal process. "What we helped them do is obtain the shorter sentence, in the most favorable prison, and we do that by telling the judge who they are through their own efforts,” Paperny says. “Lawyers are great, but they aren’t paid to say great things about their clients.” Paperny does something some find more valuable later. Another thing Paperny suggests is not having to associate with prison staff more than you need to. “Why? Something happened. You go complain to a guard. Twenty minutes later, that guard is searching someone's locker and another prisoner may say, ‘wasn't that the new prisoner talking to that guard?’” Paperny says.Most of Paperny’s clients have cash to pay the cost, which can be anywhere from ,000 to ,000. CHICAGO, Ill. – The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) celebrated its 110th anniversary this month. Just days later, they filed for bankruptcy protection. The move came as the organization was hit with dozens of child sexual abuse lawsuits dating back decades. “The boy scouts have had the problem of pedophiles targeting their troops since the very earliest days,” said attorney Chris Hurley with the Chicago based law firm Hurley McKenna & Mertz. The firm has represented more than a dozen former boy scouts who claim they were the victims of sexual abuse. “The Boy Scouts approach over all those many years was to keep it secret, to suppress the information, not share it with the community and not really addressed the problem,” said Hurley. The problem, however, has been known for decades. Court records revealed that since the 1920s, the BSA compiled “red” lists of adult volunteers identified as potential child molesters. They were known as the “ineligible files” or “perversion files.” One serial pedophile, who was twice convicted in Indiana before preying on hundreds of boy scouts in Illinois, was Thomas Hacker. He was convicted in 1989 and sentenced to 100 years in prison, where he died. Hurley settled 18 cases brought by Hacker’s victims. “I interviewed Thomas Hacker in prison and asked him why he chose the Boy Scouts. And what he told me was. ‘It was just so easy. They really didn't do anything to stop me.’” Two weeks ago, the Boy Scouts of America announced a five-year-partnership with an organization that provides services to male survivors of sexual abuse. The BSA isn’t talking but issued a statement in which president & CEO Roger Mosby wrote: “We sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed in Scouting. In addition to implementing strong policies to prevent abuse, we are dedicated to supporting victims when and how they need it.” Sweeping new legal changes extending or eliminating the statute of limitations for victims to sue their abusers have been passed in more than a dozen states like California, New York and New Jersey. That’s led to more survivors coming forward and filing suit, but with last week’s bankruptcy filing by the BSA, everything’s been put on hold. In its filing, the organization estimates its assets at between billion and billion. “The bankruptcy is really an attempt by the Boy Scout organization to control the damages and control hopefully how much money they have to pay out and to get a cut off for any more claims,” said Hurley. A portion of those assets will likely go to compensate victims. But anyone who has not filed a claim by a looming deadline could be barred from future settlements. “The bill has come due. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in an address Thursday that intelligence from "multiple sources" indicates that the Ukrainian jetliner that crashed on Tuesday was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile.
