The pandemic has added extra stress to our lives, but that's not stopping some of us from getting more sleep.New research from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Washington looked at how stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines have impacted college students' sleeping habits.They found that on average, students have been sleeping 30 minutes more per weekday and 24 minutes more per weekend day. They've also been keeping more consistent sleep schedules.This is similar to what a study of people ages 18 to 65 in Europe found during this same time.So, the big question now is whether these habits will continue now that stay at home orders are lifted.“One of the things we recognize is that when people who weren't getting enough sleep start to actually get better sleep because they can and they realize ‘wow that makes a difference in my life,’ a number of people choose behaviorally to go ahead and continue to get that better sleep,” said Ken Wright, integrative physiology professor at CU Boulder.As for the question about whether the quality of our sleep has improved, the study in Europe did look at that. It found on average, people have been seeing slight reductions in the quality of their sleep, but there are things you can do to help with this.“When they looked at the group as a whole, they found that those people who got exercise and got more sunlight during the COVID stay-at-home, they found that they actually had less reductions in their sleep quality,” said Wright.One negative result of the stay-at-home orders on our sleep in both studies – people have been going to bed later, both during the week and on weekends. The NCAA has announced Wednesday a series of major changes to college basketball in the hopes of eliminating corruption in the sport.The NCAA will now allow undergraduate students to participate in the NBA draft and return to school if they are not selected. Previously, players were allowed to attend the NBA combine but needed to withdraw 10 days prior to the draft in order to retain eligibility."Elite" high school prospects will now be permitted to be represented by an agent certified by the NCAA. According to CBS, USA Basketball will be tasked with choosing which prospects are considered "elite."The NCAA also announced major changes to the recruiting calendar, which the association hopes will allow recruits to attend more showcase events put on by high schools. Currently, apparel companies put on some of the most prestigious recruiting events.Finally, the NCAA will hold university presidents and chancellors personally accountable for their own athletics programs. The league declined to specify how the presidents and chancellors would be punished for the actions of their athletic departments.  1134

The other shoe has dropped for struggling sneaker company Under Armour.Under Armour reported quarterly sales Tuesday that fell nearly 5% from a year ago, missing forecasts badly. The company also lowered its outlook for the year again.That news sent the company's two classes of stock down more than 15% Tuesday. They had already lost nearly half their value for the year ahead of the earnings report. (Under Armour's UAA shares have voting rights while the UA shares do not.)CEO Kevin Plank said in the earnings release that the biggest problem is lower demand for its shoes and athletic apparel in its home market of the United States.The Baltimore-based company has been growing internationally, with sales surging in Europe, Latin America and Asia during the quarter.But those markets are still relatively tiny for Under Armour. Revenue in North America makes up more than three-quarters of its overall sales -- and those sales plunged 12% in the third quarter.It's a stunning fall from grace for Under Armour, which not that long ago was gaining market share at the expense of Nike and Adidas.The company signed Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry a few years ago, a move that seemed like a slam dunk success, since Curry has gone on to win multiple NBA MVP awards and two championships.But several iterations of the Curry shoes have routinely been mocked on social media for not looking cool. Even Curry's teammate Kevin Durant, who endorses Nike, poked fun at Under Armour earlier this year.Making matters worse, there have been reports of supply chain issues with the new Curry 4 line of sneakers. And Under Armour confirmed during its conference call with analysts Tuesday that it will delay some products to the fourth quarter.Under Armour also suffered from bad PR earlier this year after Plank agreed to join the White House's now defunct manufacturing council. Plank said in an interview with CNBC that "a pro-business president is something that is a real asset for the country."Curry told The Mercury News that he agreed with Plank -- but only "if you remove the 'et' from asset." Other professional athletes have been vocal about their disagreements with Trump as well.As such, Plank -- like many other CEOs -- has distanced himself from Trump lately.After Trump was reluctant to criticize neo-Nazis at a white supremacist rally, he then bashed Curry for not wanting to visit the White House and attacked athletes who protested the national anthem. Under Armour has come to the defense of its star endorsers.But that hasn't been enough to rejuvenate Under Armour's flagging sales or stock price.Meanwhile, Adidas has thrived in the past year while Under Armour and Nike have both struggled. Even Skechers has enjoyed a resurgence lately.So what can Under Armour do to get back on track? Neil Saunders, managing director of the research firm GlobalData Retail, wrote in a report that the company should continue to focus on expanding globally, which has been successful for Under Armour.But Saunders added that the company has to do more to court women as consumers, as Nike, Adidas and yoga apparel king Lululemon have successfully done."Under Armour is not so broken that it cannot be fixed. But the days of glory, when it would post double-digit uplifts in sales, are over. Now is the time to work out, slim down, and become more competitive," Saunders wrote.  3394

The publisher of an online news website says two of the site's reporters were arrested while covering protests of a grand jury's decision not to indict officers in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor. Daily Caller publisher Neil Patel says the two reporters were peacefully doing their jobs in Louisville, Kentucky, on Wednesday night when they were detained. Police on Thursday confirmed that Shelby Talcott was charged with failure to disperse and unlawful assembly and Jorge Ventura was charged with failure to disperse and violation of curfew. The parents of Otto Warmbier are suing North Korea in a 22-page complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Washington.Warmbier was a college student from Wyoming, Ohio, who was jailed in North Korea and died shortly after he was returned to the United States in a coma.In the document, Fred and Cindy Warmbier accuse Kim Jong Un's "criminal" regime of brutally torturing and murdering the 22-year-old during his 17-month-long captivity from Jan. 2, 2016, through June 13, 2017.“Otto was taken hostage, kept as a prisoner for political purposes, used as a pawn and singled out for exceptionally harsh and brutal treatment by Kim Jong Un. Kim and his regime have portrayed themselves as innocent, while they intentionally destroyed our son’s life. This lawsuit is another step in holding North Korea accountable for its barbaric treatment of Otto and our family," said Fred Warmbier in a statement. Examine the full complaint in the box below.Last summer, Fred Warmbier told the hosts of Fox & Friends and CNN "it looked like someone had taken pliers and tried to rearrange" Otto's bottom teeth.
