SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Police are investigating a reported scam that seems to be targeting the elderly.Frank Dabalack says someone knocked on his door Monday at noon, claiming they could fix a dent on the back of his car for 5.  “I’ve wanted it fixed for a long time and here’s a guy who came over, it looked like he knew what he was doing,” Dabalack said.But once he agreed and the man and his crew began work the price kept jumping to nearly 0.“I was angry with myself,” Dabalack said, “because I knew it was scam, and I’d been scammed.”He found out with the help of his neighbor, who he asked to come over.  She took a closer look at the men’s repair work. She says they were damaging the car instead of fixing it. They covered the back of the car with some gooey residue but never touched the dent.  One of the men also took pliers to the grill and started bending it out of shape.When she started asking them questions, they took off. Dabalack says he wrote them a check for 5 but was able to cancel it with his bank.Martinez said when police arrived, they said they were familiar with the scam. The men look for handicapped plates on cars in driveways and try to trick the owners into paying large amounts of money.“Frank is from a generation where people kept their word, not scammed the elderly,” Martinez said. “Frank is like a dad to me. I don’t like anyone doing that to him or any senior.”  1445

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Museum of Man is changing its name in an effort to be more inclusive.The museum posted on Facebook early Sunday morning that it will now go by the “Museum of Us."“After operating as the San Diego Museum of Man for over 40 years, it is time we step into a new identity that better reflects our values of equity, inclusion, and decolonization,” the post read.RELATED: San Diego's Museum of Man mulls new nameThe museum started its search for a new name in 2018."Our current name served us for 70 years, and now it is time to select a new name that better reflects our values ... better describes all the people we serve and the stories we want to tell and fully embodies our mission of inspiring human connections by exploring the human experience," Shannon Fowler, the museum's director of marketing and communications said at the time.The museum has been a part of Balboa Park since its completion for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.The facility is currently closed amid the coronavirus pandemic. 1042

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that the city is expected to see a major decline in tax revenue due to the coronavirus. Faulconer said the city usually takes in an estimated 0 million in sales tax throughout the fiscal year. This year, however, the city is expected to lose million in sales tax alone. Similarly, Faulconer added that the city could lose as much as million in tourism tax. The news comes the day after the famous Hotel del Coronado announced its closure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. "We have been saving for a rainy day. This is a hurricane," Faulconer said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has seen possible early signs of a COVID-19 resurgence, after four community outbreaks were reported Friday.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said the county has recorded four community coronavirus outbreaks in the last seven days.One of the newly reported outbreaks included an unnamed restaurant. That outbreak remains under investigation, Wooten added."We had only about three community outbreaks in the month of May," Wooten said.Of the county's 56 active outbreaks, 13 are in the community setting, which have included office buildings, churches, parties, and "unauthorized weddings" in the past.One of San Diego County's 13 triggers which could cause the county to reverse loosened restrictions includes seven community outbreaks in a week. Wooten said Friday that the county is currently "green" on all triggers.County officials encouraged San Diegans to continue wearing facial coverings when around other non-household members, wash their hands regularly, and stay home if they are feeling sick. 1068
