BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China respects the results of south Sudan referendum, which was announced Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Tuesday.Hong made the remarks in a statement concerning China's view on the results of the referendum."China respects the choice of Sudan people and appreciates the unremitting efforts of both the north and the south to promote the peace process between the two sides," Hong Lei said."China hopes the two sides will continue to resolve controversial issues through dialogue and consultation in line with the principle of mutual understanding and mutual accommodation," Hong said."China expects full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement(CPA) as well as long peace and stability in Sudan."The referendum, conducted from Jan. 9 to 15, was a major condition of the CPA, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides. The South Sudan Referendum Commission Monday announced the final results of the referendum saying that 98.83 percent of the voters had voted for separation.

JERUSALEM, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Traditional farming may have found an ally on the Internet, via an Israeli "cloud-based" software system that enables farmers to get professional information and tips from colleagues worldwide. And IBM is interested in what they have to say.Agriculture Knowledge On-Line (AKOL) says its Internet-based system can aid global agriculture by utilizing the collective knowledge of kibbutzim (communal farms in Israel) and other agricultural experts, to offer small farmers personalized solutions to improve dairy output and crop production, and better prevent droughts.Owned by Kibbutz Bror Hayil in southern Israel, the software house has recently signed a cooperation and development agreement with IBM to manage access and technology issues."What we do here is like a bank of information and IBM provides the special tools for the end users," AKOL's CEO Roni Shani told Xinhua, "and you can do what we call 'agricultural market.'""For example, if someone in Australia needs advice on how to grow their crops better, they can just ask our advice or search through our database to find the best product for the country they 're growing the crops in," Shani said."Let's say someone in India, a small farmer, has a problem with their crop or chickens," Shani explained, noting that "it's usually very expensive and time consuming to get someone to come and check what is wrong."But, for a monthly fee, a basic subscription service enables the end user to access the software database, which allows "the farmer to just look at the pictures and pick the one that will explain what the disease or problem is and offer a solution, and if it is available in their country."AKOL claims about 1,000 customers over the globe."We just started developing it for use outside of the kibbutz with IBM's help," Shani said, "and we are developing it also in other parts of the world, like China. Right now we're cooperating with the Chinese government to help milk producers get the most out of their milking systems."Israel is one of the leading countries in milk production, with each cow yielding around 12,000 liters of milk a year on average. Two Chinese provinces plan to use AKOL's milking control system, in order to better manage their herds and equipment and increase milk production."And this is just the beginning," Shani explained, "because we are also working with other developing countries. This software will help millions of small farmers in rural or impoverished areas, that will be able to get advice and benefit from other farmers' experience on the spot and at a very affordable rate."

MOSCOW, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Soyuz TMA-20 spacecraft with three crew members onboard has landed in Kazakhstan on Tuesday, said the Mission Control Center (MCC) outside Moscow. The spacecraft undocked from the International Space Station early Tuesday, carrying Russian cosmonaut Dmitry Kondratyev, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Paolo Nespoli and NASA astronaut Catherine Coleman back to Earth.According to the center, the Soyuz TMA-20 landed in the Kazakh steppe at 6:27 Moscow time (0227 GMT). Some 17 planes and helicopters and several rescue vehicles had conducted search works.Flight engineers Catherine "Cady" Coleman of the U.S. (L) and Italian Paolo Nespoli (R), and Russian cosmonaut and station commander Dmitry Kondratyev are seen after the Soyuz capsule landed, about 150 km (93 miles) southeast of the Kazakh town of Zhezkazgan May 24, 2011. A Russian Soyuz capsule delivered an international trio of astronauts back to Earth on Tuesday after six months on the International Space Station, parachuting through clear skies toward a safe landing on the Kazakh steppe.Deputy head of Federal Medical and Biological Agency Vyacheslav Rogozhkin said Italian astronaut Naspoli had some health problem after landing."Two crew members are fine, the third one has some problems with his vestibular system," Rogozhkin told a press conference after the landing. In December, the Soyuz TMA-20 was launched from the Kazakh Baikonur space center with three crew members. The next launch of manned spacecraft to the ISS was scheduled in early June.

BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Cigarette displays in shops will be banned and tobacco companies may also be forced to make their products in plain wrappers in an attempt to stop people from smoking, announced the UK government Thursday. The prominent displays and attractive packaging of tobacco have long provided shopkeepers with stable income, keeping addicts hooked and quitters tempted. However, the government's move that will begin as early as spring next year will keep cigarettes hidden away and make it just a tad more difficult for smokers to find their fix."Nearly all adult smokers started smoking before they turned 18 and every year, over 300,000 children under 16 try smoking," said Chief Medical Officer Sally Davies."Smoking is undeniably one of the biggest and most stubborn challenges in public health. Over eight million people in England still smoke and it causes more than 80,000 deaths each year," Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said in his statement on the new law. Now, this move has drawn predictable responses from both sides of the tobacco wars, with health groups cheering and retailers grumbling. The British Medical Association said it was "very pleased" with the announcement, citing research which it said showed that a display ban would play "a key role in discouraging children from smoking and also help smokers quit."On the other hand, industry groups and independent retailers complained it would burden them with the cost of refitting their stores and reduce their already narrow profit margins. And according to media interviews, many people kept skeptical about the real impact the move would have, especially on young smokers.
