TUCSON, Ariz. — A nationwide scam claims you'll be arrested because you missed jury duty and you'll have to pay right away to escape it. You might think you can spot a gimmick a mile away, but a Tucson businesswoman fell for it last week.At the start of Denise Hausler's busy workday as a licensed professional counselor, she received a call that went to voicemail. The man identified her by name."Hello, Ms. Hausler, this is Sgt. Adam with the Pima County Sheriff's Department warrant and citation division," the caller said. "Ma'am I'm calling in regards of an ongoing civil matter, ma'am."Hausler called him back right away. The imposter told her there were two federal warrants out for her arrest. Hausler panicked, fearing she would be arrested at her office in front of her clients."And he said, 'We're going to send someone to arrest you unless you volunteer to come down to the sheriff's office off of Benson Highway,' which made sense because the sheriff's office is off of Benson Highway," she said.The caller told her if she drove down to the sheriff's department right away, she can post bond then appear before a judge who will probably give her the money back."I'm panicked, I'm crying, I'm literally thanking this man for helping me not be arrested and being able to go home and not be detained and apologizing," she said.And he told her she can't get off the phone with him or talk to anyone."'We're going to track you by phone until you get to this location because we don't want you to flee,' and I'm believing this," she said.Minutes later, the caller instructed her to first buy My Vanilla cards from Walmart — five of them — totaling ,500 because the payment system was down at the sheriff's department and those specific cards are used for these types of cases.And she believed him. "I know, I know," she said. "In retrospect, I think, who am I? It doesn't even sound real. But when you're in it, he was so intimidating and so direct and telling me, 'We're going to come and detain you.' " She bought the cards. The scammer then told her to read all the card numbers to him to verify they're valid.She did, but at that point she became suspicious and asked a stranger to call the sheriff's department."And the man said, 'You're getting scammed. You need to get in there an undo your cards,' " she said.But it was too late. She could only recover less than a ,000. Hausler wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable."I just don't want other people to fall for it. If you hear 'My Vanilla,' now I know the sheriff's department does not come to get you if you did miss jury duty. I didn't know that," said Hausler.KGUN called that same phone number left on Hausler's voicemail and it's the same voice saying it's the Pima County Sheriff's Department. These con artists used a spoofed phone number.The Arizona Attorney General says legitimate government offices will not threaten you with imprisonment or demand that you pay a debt immediately.    Law enforcement and courts in southern Arizona have also been warning people not to fall for it.The Arizona Superior Court in Pima County has received several recent reports of jury service scams in Pima County. Two of the former owners of Toys "R" Us have agreed to pay million to help laid-off employees.Bain Capital and KKR, private equity firms that owned part of the toy retailer, set up a severance fund to pay former workers who lost their jobs when the company closed its stores.The third owner, real estate firm Vornado, did not join the fund, and did not immediately respond to request for comment.MORE: How the Toys 'R' Us closures massively impact?the U.S.Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy a year ago with plans to stay in business. But in March the company's creditors forced it to go out out of business, and the 31,000 remaining employees did not get severance payments.Some top executives at Toys "R" Us received bonuses as part of the bankruptcy process. The nation's bankruptcy laws place limits on the severance payments that can be made to laid-off employees, and they give priority to repaying creditors of the bankrupt companies.Had the employees been laid off before the bankruptcy, they would have been entitled to severance pay of up to one week of pay for every year of service.The million severance fund does not come from Toys "R" Us.The fund was set up following negotiations between the private equity firms and various public interest groups that organized the employees, including Organization United for Respect, Private Equity Stakeholder Project and Center for Popular Democracy."This Fund begins to ensure the hard-working people who spent their lives building Toys 'R' Us and making children happy are not left out in the cold," said Marilyn Muniz, a New York-based Toys "R" employee for nearly 20 years.The groups are seeking additional contributions to the fund from Vornado as well as two Toys "R" Us lenders, Solus and Angelo Gordon, which pushed the company to shutdown operations rather than stay in business. At the time of the bankruptcy filing she figured she would get about seven months of severance if her store shut down. She said she was shocked when she learned the promised severance wouldn't be paid."It was very difficult," she said. "Here in Arizona, unemployment is only 0 a week. It's not even minimum wage. It was rough. I only got by with friends and family helping me out."After about four months she found a job as an assistant manager of a Home Goods store, which pays less than Babies "R" Us. She said she's kept in touch with the employees who used to work with her at Babies "R" Us."Just about everyone has found some kind of work, but it generally took three or four months," she said. "Some aren't earning as much. Some of the lower-level employees have actually found better paying jobs."The fund has hired attorney Kenneth Feinberg to come up with a formula to determine who gets how much money. Feinberg has made a career deciding distribution to victims of events, such as the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He has proposed that payments go to workers who had been with the company at least a year and who made between ,000 and 0,000 in annual income."In order to maximize the impact of available funds, key eligibility requirements and payment parameters had to be instituted," said Feinberg. Payments are expected to start soon after December 15 and be completed by April.The million fund will not cover a full severance plan for the workers. UPDATE (5:21 p.m. Wednesday): Police say they have found the missing boy safe and he has been reunited with his family.CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Police Department is asking for the public's help finding a missing Otay Ranch boy.Police say they received a call at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon from a mother who said her 11-year-old son wasn’t home. Officers responded and are now searching an area in the 1500 block of El Prado. A Chula Vista police helicopter was seen circling the Village of Montecito neighborhood announcing a description of the boy. The child, a Hispanic male, was last seen wearing a blue "Smurf" short-sleeved shirt and black shorts, according to police. Police say the boy stands 5-foot tall with a thin build.A person describing himself as the child's father posted a Facebook message pleading for the community's help locating his son."Hi FB fam.....my son Santigo is missing. Two New Jersey Transit buses collided outside the Lincoln Tunnel in Manhattan on Friday, injuring more than 30 people, fire officials said.The crash happened outside the north tube on the tunnel's Manhattan side. At least 32 people were injured, FDNY said.Of those who were hurt, 25 suffered minor injures and seven suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries, FDNY said. 386
