LONDON (AP) — Johnny Depp has lost his high-stakes libel case against the Sun tabloid newspaper for labeling him a “wife beater.”Depp sued News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun, and the newspaper’s executive editor, Dan Wootton, over an April 2018 article that accused him of assaulting his then-wife and fellow actor Amber Heard.Depp has denied the allegations, but Heard insisted in court that he had abused her.In his ruling, the British judge pointed to several episodes that he said showed the actor’s ex-wife had feared for her life.Justice Andrew Nicol said Monday that the defendants had proved that what they published was “substantially true” during a high-profile trial in London over the summer that included lurid — and irreconcilable — accounts from Depp and Heard.Depp’s lawyers said they would appeal the decision. 844

LOCKPORT, N.Y. — A woman went into labor while watching the original version of the horror movie "The Purge" at the Transit Drive-In Theater in Lockport, New York. The woman's car would not start because the battery had gone dead, making things even more stressful."It was code red," said owner Rick Cohen with a laugh, who admits that he was worried the baby was going to be born on the spot. In addition, the movie was still playing, making a rescue in the dark more challenging. The Transit Drive-in was built in 1952 and has been operated by Cohen's family since 1957. During the rescue, Cohen was thinking "hot towels, hot water and hopefully not too big of a mess." The drive-in owner has has no children or experience in the delivery room.Cohen was able to use a portable battery pack and flashlight to start the car and escort the woman and her very nervous husband safely to the exit.Social media has also taken a liking to this story with numerous people posting "Congratulations" and "Close call! Could have been the first baby born at the Transit Drive-In.""I guess the baby was in a hurry to come see a movie," said Cohen with a chuckle, who is hoping to meet the parents again. "I wish them the best but would really like to know how they made out."In the rush to get the couple out of the drive-in and on the way to the hospital, Cohen said he never thought to find out who the parents were and what hospital they were going to.While he has encountered many things in his years as a drive-in movie operator, Cohen said he has never had a situation where a woman began to give birth — especially during a horror movie. 1701
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Public health officials in Southern California are taking extra precautions this Fourth of July weekend as Los Angeles experiences a spike in COVID-19 cases. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is ordering the county’s beaches be closed Friday morning through Monday morning. Officials hope this prevents dangerous overcrowding that could result in the spread of the novel coronavirus. For that same reason, the department is also prohibiting fireworks displays in the county during the holiday weekend.Beach parking lots, piers, bike paths and access points will be closed, as well. The health department says key metrics show steep increases in community spread. On Monday, officials announced more than 2,900 new cases of COVID-19, which is the single largest one-day case count since the pandemic began.Projections by the Department of Health Services show a clear increase in area hospitalizations in the coming weeks, which could cause a surge in the health care system.“Closing the beaches and prohibiting fireworks displays during this important summer holiday weekend was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but it’s the responsible decision to protect public health and protect our residents from a deadly virus. The Fourth of July holiday weekend typically means large crowds and gatherings to celebrate, a recipe for increased transmission of COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “We all need to take this virus more seriously and residents and business owners must do their part. Physical distancing isn’t optional, wearing a face covering isn’t optional, spending time only with those you live with isn’t optional — these are requirem

Through a Kickstarter campaign and bake sales, Berton and her students raised more than ,000 for the machine - and a film. "We never thought it would be an Oscar-nominated film, but the idea was always, if we could just make an educational film to raise awareness about this issue then that would be the jewel of the nonprofit," said Berton, who is the film's Executive Producer. The film has received some Hollywood backing. Actor Jack Black, Berton's classmate at UCLA, was among its earliest donors. Other actors including Sarah Paulson and Kiefer Sutherland has supported the film on social media. 1507
