SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans are continuing to push to get through to the state agency that handles unemployment claims, as bills come due.The region's unemployment rate is now a record 15%, as 195,000 people lost their jobs in April. Meanwhile, the Employment Development Department continues to be inundated with people trying call. The agency plans to add 1,800 temporary full-time and hourly workers over the coming weeks to handle the influx."It would be so helpful if I could just reach out to someone," said Ashley Porter, of El Cajon, who can't get through to ask why she has not received unemployment. "It's been very stressful for me."Porter still has a job at a medical call center, but had to reduce her hours to take care of her six-year-old daughter, Adalynn, whose school closed. The EDD's website says people who take that step may be eligible for jobless benefits, but that it's on a case-by-case basis and involves a phone interview.Porter says she never got that phone call, but what did arrive was a letter that she is eligible for up to 8 per week. But when she goes online to claim benefits, she gets an error message that reads - benefits exceeded. Her calls and emails to EDD are going unanswered. "I just feel so low, I just feel like I've worked so long and I've worked so hard that I mean, now that this has happened, can I just get a little assistance?" said Porter, who says her employer has not allowed her position to work from home. A spokesperson for the EDD expressed empathy for Porter's situation, but declined to discuss specifics. The spokesperson said, however, that the benefits exceeded message probably means the claimant makes too much to get benefits.State law says workers with reduced hours are eligible for unemployment if 75% of their reduced earnings comes out to less than what their weekly unemployment check would be. Porter says she's now earning about 0 per week at her reduced hours. But 75% of 0 is 0. That's more than the 8 she would receive.Meanwhile, she says she's getting behind on bills. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police investigated Wednesday threats made against multiple professors at University of San Diego. A flyer with gun crosshairs was slipped under the office doors of two professors, USD confirmed. The threats also included flyers with the professors’ names and pictures, calling them fascists and urging students to boycott their classes, 10News learned."A professor took responsibility for the flyers and the inappropriate behavior. The individual was suspended, removed from campus and is not permitted to return to campus or participate in any USD-related off-campus events while we conduct our investigation and initiate next steps. The professor has complied with these directives, has not returned to the campus, and to our knowledge, similar inappropriate behavior has not occurred," USD officials said.University officials said they notified San Diego Police upon learning about the threats last week. However, a police spokesperson said they just learned of the threats and opened their investigation today. At 4 p.m., faculty gathered for a meeting with administrators to learn about the situation. About the same time, students gathered in front of the Theology and Religious Studies building, saying they weren’t told about the threats. “The university has a duty and an obligation to protect public image. They have probably legal obligations, I'm assuming. But they also have an obligation to the student body. They have an obligation to make sure that we feel safe, that when I walk on this campus I'm aware if something's taken place that's put my safety or my professor's safety in danger,” said senior Alexa Withrow. A campus-wide email was sent out later Wednesday afternoon, telling students, "the Department of Public Safety and the San Diego Police Department were immediately contacted, an investigation was initiated and a communication was sent to the College faculty."Counseling was made available to students.One of the USD professors received a temporary restraining order against Associate Professor Louis Komjathy. The documents name Komjathy as the one responsible for the threats and say he was upset about a promotion he was denied. While we may enjoy the sparkle and booms, your pets may run for their lives.“You don’t want to have them outside where all those loud fireworks are going off,” said San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Dariel Walker. The organization sees a sudden spike in stray animals around this time of year, she said.Just like on July 4th, many pets who are terrified of loud noises run off in a panic. Walker suggested that owners prevent that by creating a calming environment for animals. “You can even even play music or have the TV on or have some noise in the background to drown out that loud sound of the fireworks,” Walker said. Walker advised pet owners to be prepared with a microchip in case they do run away.
