TAMPA, Fla. — University of South Florida Professor Dr. Jay Wolfson and health experts around the world are studying the latest research project on the coronavirus."This thing gives us surprises almost every week. We learn something new, and it's usually unpleasant every week," said Wolfson. The new research is from Australia's National Science Agency, and it found the virus could survive and remain infectious on surfaces like glass, steel, and paper for up to 28 days."What they are concerned about, what we are all concerned about it, is if you have some viable virus on your fingers and you touch your eyes or you touch your nose or you touch your friend's eyes or nose, there's a greater risk of it being brought into the body if there's enough of it there," said Wolfson. But Dr. Thomas Unnasch, also with USF Health, says this study was done with perfect conditions for a virus to thrive."They put the virus under different surfaces and then preserve them in the dark at ideal temperatures and humidity. So it's not too surprising that under those ideal conditions, that it would last quite a bit longer than it would under normal conditions."While experts agree COVID-19 primarily spreads from person to person through droplets in the air, there is still more to understand about how it can transfer from objects or surfaces to people."People do have a proclivity to touch their face and their eyes, so if you are in a place that's not familiar to you and you are using things that are unfamiliar to you, just be careful," said Wolfson."Your own cell phone, if you are the only one using it, that's not a big deal. But door handles, faucet handles elevator buttons things like that. Wash your hands after you do that. That's a really good idea," said Unnasch. All of the experiments in this study were done in the dark. Research has shown direct sunlight can kill the virus. This story was first reported by Erik Waxler at WFTS in Tampa Bay, Florida. 1965

According to White House officials, Barrett tested negative for COVID-19 on Friday morning.President Donald Trump nominated Barrett to take Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's spot on the Supreme Court at a ceremony at the White House on Saturday. At least one attendee at that event, University of Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins, has since tested positive for COVID-19, though it's not clear how or when he contracted the virus. In addition to her work as a judge on the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, Barrett is also a faculty member at Notre Dame.Trump himself announced early Friday morning that he had contracted COVID-19. He's reportedly suffering mild symptoms. 909

Tennis superstar Serena Williams says she found out her sister's killer had been released from prison minutes before her loss to Johanna Konta last month. The 6-1 6-0 defeat to Konta in the opening round of the Silicon Valley Classic was the worst of Williams' 23-year career. In an interview with Time Magazine, the 23-time grand slam champion said she was scrolling through Instagram 10 minutes before her match and learned the killer had been released on parole."I couldn't shake it out of my mind," the 36 year-old said.Robert Maxfield was jailed for 15 years in April 2006 for the shooting of Yetunde Price -- Williams' older half-sister -- in 2003 in Compton, Los Angeles.Price was 31 at the time of her death and had three children aged 11, 9 and 5. 762

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Billionaire Mike Bloomberg is helping Florida felons pay their debts so they can vote in the presidential election. The former Democratic presidential candidate is taking action days after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won a court victory to keep felons who served their time from voting until they’ve also paid off fines, restitution and court fees. Bloomberg is part of an effort that has raised more than million dollars to help these felons vote in the presidential election. That’s in addition to 0 million he has pledged to help Joe Biden win Florida.“The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and no American should be denied that right. Working together with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, we are determined to end disenfranchisement and the discrimination that has always driven it,” Bloomberg said in a written statement.A federal appellate court ruled on Sept. 11 that in addition to serving their sentences, Florida felons must pay all fines, restitution and legal fees before they can regain their right to vote. Under Amendment 4, which Florida voters passed overwhelmingly in 2018, felons who have completed their sentences would have voting rights restored. Republican lawmakers then moved to define what it means to complete a sentence. In addition to prison time served, lawmakers directed that all legal financial obligations, including unpaid fines and restitution, would also have to be settled before a felon could be eligible to vote. The Florida Rights Restitution Coalition had raised about million before Bloomberg made calls to raise almost million more, according to Bloomberg staffers. The case could have broad implications for the November elections. Florida has 29 electoral college votes that are crucial to President Donald Trump’s hopes of staying in the White House. 1861

TAMPA, Fla. -- The fight against COVID-19 is taking off in a new direction: it’s headed for the friendly skies.“We wanted to be able to instill confidence in the traveling public that, in fact, it is safe to travel,” said John Tiliacos, vice president of airport operations and customer service at Tampa International Airport.Tucked away in a corner of the main terminal at the airport sits a coronavirus testing center. This month, Tampa’s airport became the first in the country to offer two types of COVID-19 tests to the flying public. The tests are administered by medical personnel from BayCare Health System.“There's a lot of people who are asymptomatic carriers and we don't want to invariably go and expose a loved one or a family member,” said Dr. Nishant Anand, Chief Medical Officer for BayCare Health System. While the tests are required for people traveling to certain international destinations, it can also benefit people traveling within the U.S., by helping them avoid a 14-day quarantine in certain states, if they test negative for the virus.“Me and three other girlfriends are going on the girl's trip,” said Aneesah Rashad, who is celebrating her birthday with a vacation.Rashad is heading to Puerto Rico and needed a COVID test to do so.“It's required in order for you to go to enter into San Juan within 72 hours prior to your travel day,” Rashad said. “I've been tested several times, just to make sure, because I do care about my health and it's important to me.”The two tests offered include the , rapid coronavirus antigen test, which offers test results in 15 minutes. There is also the more accurate, 5 PCR test – which uses a nasal swab – with results within two days. Both tests are covered by most insurance.“Heaven forbid, if someone does test positive, we tell them to go home and quarantine,” Dr. Anand said. “We tell them what the results are. We then are obligated by law to notify the Department of Health for Hillsborough County, which is a county that we're in.”Even some airlines, like United, American, Jetblue and Hawaiian, are now offering COVID testing before certain flights.Earlier this year, passenger numbers cratered at airports across the country, down more than 90% in Tampa alone.“[It’s] the worst impact that we've seen to travel,” Tiliacos said. However, the number of people flying is starting to tick back up heading into the holiday season. The coronavirus testing center is open at a time when it could become vital.“We hope that other airports replicate this,” Tiliacos said.Since Tampa International Airport opened their testing site, several others have followed suit, including in Oakland, Boston and New York. 2686
