DENVER, Colorado — Cloud seeding can provide between 5% and 15% more snow to help ski areas, farmers and watersheds in the state, supporters say. "These observations show us that cloud seeding does work," said University of Colorado researcher Katja Friedrich, who has studied cloud seeding inside and outside of a laboratory. She worked with scientists who flew planes near moisture-rich clouds and injected them with silver iodide, a substance that causes moisture to become heavy and fall to the ground as snow. On a radar image, she pointed outlines of snow that later formed. The visible lines matched the pattern the cloud seeding plane had flown in the sky. Cloud seeding in Colorado aims to produce more snow, not rain. Friedrich said it's difficult to quantify how much additional snow is created. Cloud seeding doesn't make more clouds, but supporters believe it gets more snow out of an approaching storm. Planes can be used to seed approaching storm clouds. Ground seeders use propane to heat the air and also used in the mountains and Western Slope. Silver iodide is then added to the warmed air as it rises. The moisture, already in the clouds, bonds to the silver iodide. When it becomes heavy, it falls to the ground as snow. Cloud seeding has been happening for about 70 years in Colorado but is slowed in years when there is heavy snowfall. Cloud seeders operated during the 2018-2019 winter but slowed in places where significant snowpack accumulated. A man who owns a cloud seeding company on the Western Slope said the technology works well. Cloud seeder's viewpoint Cloud seeders dot highpoints in Colorado from the west to central part of the state. Ski areas hire Eric Hjermstad's Western Weather Consultants company to cloud seed early in the season, so there's more natural snow before opening day. He continues seeding until mid-April. An FDA advisory committee is backing a treatment meant to help people with peanut allergies. It still hasn't been federally approved but researchers are hopeful about it because it has the potential to help more than 1 million kids and teens who suffer from peanut allergies. The treatment comes in the form of a capsule. The drug is called Palforzia. It's not meant to be a total cure but rather a treatment that can help children build up a tolerance and reduce their allergic reaction. One teen that’s been part of the testing started off the trial with just three milligrams of a peanut — that's equivalent to just one one-hundredth of a peanut! Nina Nichols didn't have a reaction until she consumed 300 milligrams. She is in a controlled environment where doctors can jump in and help her when needed. Researchers will increase her dosage to build up tolerance every two weeks. “I never thought that I could … tolerate the equivalent of one peanut,” Nichols said. “That's just crazy to me because I started off reacting to one one-fiftieth of a peanut. You can't even cut that up yourself.” Nichols will be part of a food challenge in December where doctors give her up to 2,000 milligrams of peanuts. If she passes that round, she'll move on to real foods to see how she reacts to different elements of a peanut. Allergy expert Tonya A. Winders says the decision is monumental because there have been no FDA approved treatments for peanut allergies before. Kyle Rittenhouse, accused of shooting and killing two people during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, has been released from jail on bond Friday.A spokesperson with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department announced that Rittenhouse's attorney paid the million cash bond that was set by a judge earlier this month.Rittenhouse thus is no longer in custody at the Kenosha County Jail, according to the spokesperson.On Oct. 30, an Illinois judge OK'ed the extradition of Rittenhouse back to Wisconsin to face homicide charges.Rittenhouse is charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the death of 26-year-old Silver Lake resident Anthony Huber, attempted first-degree intentional homicide for the shooting of Gauge Grosskreutz, 26, of West Allis, and first-degree reckless homicide for the death of Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, of Kenosha, according to a criminal complaint.Rittenhouse is also charged with two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety for shooting his AR-15-style rifle toward other people in a crowd, and with possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18.The shooting happened on Aug. 25, after a white police officer shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back, paralyzing him from the waist down.
