LAKEWOOD, Ohio - Lizzie Ackerman loves to read."We found that it's really valuable and rewarding to learn about people that are different than us,” said Ackerman.When Ackerman thought about how she would get involved with the Black Lives Matter Movement, she knew just what to do."Sharing books about people who are different than we felt like a really good way to educate ourselves and our community just about the world around us,” she said.This Lakewood resident is starting her very own little free diverse library.It will work similarly to all the little free libraries we’ve seen across Northeast Ohio, except this one will only carry books from Black authors, feature Black people or educate folks on how to be anti-racist. It will also feature topics specific to the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, and cultural, religious, and ethnic minorities."Reading about people and experiences and lifestyles and cultures that are different than your own just helps cultivate empathy and respect and compassion and understanding,” said Ackerman.Ackerman is joining a national movement started by a New York City school counselor."In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, I really thought it would be important to use libraries as an outlet and as a vessel to get important stories heard and read by others within the community,” said Sarah Kamya.Kamya started what she calls the 'Little Free Diverse Libraries Project.’She's collected thousands of books and shipped them to people in all 50 states wanting to start little diverse libraries of their own."Once you put a book in, you don’t know where it goes so I just imagine the little Black or brown child picking up a book and seeing themselves represented or the white parent who is educating themselves, learning more about cultures and learning more how to walk alongside others and people that don’t look like them,” said Kamya.Ackerman plans to launch her library in the middle of the month but she needs some help, so she’s started a Go Fund Me page."Normally little free libraries are stocked by people in the community and just whatever book they’re done with, but because we have a specific topic, we’d like to make sure that we always have books on hand that are relevant,” said Ackerman.Ackerman says this is an opportunity to amplify all Black people through the pages of these books.“It's really important that everyone see themselves reflected and celebrated in literature,” she said.This story was first reported by Amanda VanAllen at WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio. 2541

Larry Nassar has been moved from a federal prison in Tucson, Ariz. after his lawyer claims Nassar was assaulted in prison.The disgraced former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor was moved to a Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It's a place where inmates stay while waiting to be transferred to another prison.Nassar pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault in November 2017 after being charged with molesting seven girls, all but one of whom were gymnasts. Those sexual assaults happened at Michigan State University.In a filing by his attorneys, Nassar claims that he was abused in prison and also mentions the time when he was charged at by one of the victims' father in court."Dr. Nassar reports, that in late May he was physically attacked in federal prison within a few hours of being placed in general population," the court filing reads.  953

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — In the era of the "Me Too" movement and against a backdrop of sexual misconduct in the school district, a YouTube video has some wondering whether a candidate for the Board of Trustees is sending the wrong message on social media. Her video is called "How to Be Sexy."It's been viewed more than a million times, but now it's getting serious scrutiny as the self-described non-traditional candidate is running for school board trustee. Watch the full interview with Danielle Ford in the video player at the end of this story."I initially searched for the videos because I started hearing other employees discussing it and saying they were kind of concerned," said Elena Rodriguez, CCSD Student Services Division. Elena Rodriguez has worked for the district for decades. She's an outspoken advocate for change and accountability and regularly attends and speaks at school board meetings."As difficult as it is for women to climb the ladder of administration and so forth, and the issues that we've had in the past with employees being accused of sexual harassment and discrimination and so forth, I think it sends the wrong message," Rodriguez said.Danielle Ford isn't shying away from her videos, but she does want to explain them. "As far as that particular video and the messaging of sexiness, I very much believe in empowering women to love their bodies and to be proud of who they are."Danielle dropped out of high school when she became pregnant at age 17 and got her G.E.D. She says this video and others posted on her Young Moms Club website are designed to reach out to other teen moms who face the same stigma and challenges she did when she was a CCSD student.Getting that message out is a serious effort for Ford. Drawing from her own personal experience she takes on the meaning of teen motherhood in the TedX talk from 2013."If we can offer support and encouragement to these girls rather than criticism and judgment, then we can all positively affect the lives of over 10 million people."Drawing from her marketing experience, Danielle says she has to be creative to ensure teen moms get her message. "And although I wouldn't use that same tagline and picture if I'm talking to different people, it worked!  Because that video itself has over a million views.  And it brought you here," Ford added.Danielle's message to feel confident and powerful at any age as a woman is strong. But the context of that video ("How to Be Sexy") is how to get and keep a man. Some are questioning if that's a good message to send to young girls. According to Ford, "Girls do want that! We all do! We all want a partner."Though she posted these videos years before knowing she'd run for public office, she stands behind them all. Including a video entitled "Why I Let My 10-Year-Old Daughter Date." But as you'll hear in the video below, that "date" was really just a family outing to Chuck E. Cheese.Ford said, "I feel like it's a really good thing to teach her now what a date is and how to be treated by boys."She also has a video on "How to Get a Boyfriend... It's Seriously Just Like Shopping.""When you watch the videos, the common theme is that we need to empower kids instead of criticizing them for having thoughts or whatever it is," Ford added.But Rodriguez says there's a better way to empower young women. "For example, towards education--higher education--technical schools. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Three baby sea lions stranded in a small cave in La Jolla were rescued Friday by SeaWorld experts.The sea lions became trapped for an unknown reason and did not appear to be able to swim to safety. The animals' mother cried out in distress as onlookers watched from above. One sealion was lodged between two rocks, while two others were inside on the floor and unable to find their way out. A SeaWorld team reached the scene about 11:30 a.m. to save the sea lions. Mark Bressler, a SeaWorld rescuer, said the mothers and babies can get separated when humans get too close to the sea lions. The crowd cheered as the animals were reunited with their mom. 687
