ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Monday morning neighbors posted about a rash of graffiti in Escondido, a block away from Glen View Elementary school, outraged at the content and vandalism.On East Mission Avenue, just past Midway Drive, a home and two power boxes stained with black spray paint. One of the designs looked like a Star of David, causing concern online, worried the vandalism was anti-semitic."I noticed the graffiti over there, and that's just a disgrace," Grandmother Rose Ochoa said as she paused on her daily walk with two grandchildren on their way to pick up another grandchild."I feel disrespected. I feel like there's a lot of hate," Christina Landers said. She's lived in this neighborhood for about 27 years and said the graffiti has spread closer to her home, "it's crazy, it's like they're messing up our side of town.""I mean it's everywhere, you can't walk down a block without seeing it," Ochoa said. She moved to San Diego from Los Angeles and said she loves this neighborhood."I think they're too young to point it out right now," she said referencing her 4-year-old granddaughter and 2-year-old grandson, "and I'm thankful for that, but there's going to come a time that I'll have to explain it to them, and that's going to be hard because I teach them at home do not to write on the walls, do not write on the chairs and then we walk out here and see everything on the walls."One of the tags included what looked like the Star of David, concerning the owner of the home that was tagged."I talked to the guy, and the guy says I don't have any enemies I don't know why they'd do this to me?" Landers said.Around 11 a.m. the Escondido Graffiti Eradication Unit drove up, ready to repaint the walls and electrical boxes."It's very rewarding to be able to give back to a community I've lived in my whole life," City Worker Nate Tunnell said.Both he and his coworker said the work is constant, and thankful neighbors make it worthwhile."We've been fighting them, and it looks like we've been beating them too, so that's always going to put a smile on my face," Tunnell said. "Right on you're doing a good job!" ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A 13-year-old boy suffered burns to his face after a science experiment at Capri Elementary School in Encinitas went awry.Priest Rivera, a 6th-grade student, said a teacher was attempting to show a group of students an experiment known as the “black snake” or “carbon snake” when it exploded in his face.The experiment involves mixing sugar and baking soda with a flammable liquid and lighting it on fire to create a snake-like reaction.Rivera said the teacher told them to stand in a semi-circle around her on the field as she lit the experiment on fire.“The teacher kept on pouring more rubbing alcohol onto the flame itself because the flame wasn’t building up,” said Rivera.That’s about all he remembers before waking up in an ambulance with a sharp pain all over his face.“My face was constantly burning and burning,” he said. “I still feel it right now.”He spent six days in the hospital and underwent four surgeries, according to his mom Gina Rivera.“It was just hell,” she said about the experience. “He kept saying, ‘mom am I going to go blind?’”Priest kept his eyesight but two weeks after the accident, still had bandages around his face to protect the burn areas.Gina said it’s still unclear how bad the injuries will end up being though she said the effects will be long-lasting. “It has halted his life. It’s changed his life,” she said.The outgoing superintendent of the Encinitas Union School District, Timothy Baird, told 10News they could not comment on any specifics because the incident involved a student. Though, he did say the district is investigating what happened.The Rivera family has hired a lawyer and plans to sue the district. 1692

(KGTV) - Escondido restaurant owners made the decision to stay open for indoor and outdoor dining after a court ruled Friday evening they must be take out only.On Grand Avenue, it looked like a time warp. People were back under tents and umbrellas eating and drinking on the patio and some indoors.At Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria, the sign in the window blinked "Open.""The restaurant business isn't something you can say hey close, open, close," Tony Pepperony Pizzeria Owner Joe Locricchio said.That's exactly what he's been dealing with for the last 10 months."We have livelihoods on the line... I have single mothers okay, they need to buy diapers. I have guys that haven't had a job and they're walking out of here with money every night in tips." Locricchio said his 80+ employees are like family.Staying open hasn't come without challenges.He said he was criminally cited by Alcoholic Beverage Control and issued a cease-and-desist order by the City of Escondido.His restaurant on Grand Avenue just opened 17 days ago.When asked what he had to say to critics who think he should close and are worried about the coronavirus killing San Diegans, he said, "listen, my heart goes out to everybody that's passed away, one death is too many. To those critics who have something to say about my decision, listen I respect their decision. I respect that they have the choice to not have to come here they don't have to support me, all I ask is to support my decision."He said strangers have yelled and ranted to him about his decision.He said what is more compelling, is how the community has shown their support, "it's been an overwhelming response. It makes my hair stand up, I'm going to be honest with you, the community has been unbelievable."Other restaurants are staying open too and Locricchio encourages more to follow their lead.This while hospitalizations continue to soar and health officials say it's safest to stay home.Locricchio said the choice is yours.He said the criminal citation means he could have his Liquor License temporarily taken away. (KGTV) — In a show of solidarity, Escondido Police Chief Ed Varso and Mayor Paul McNamara joined community members for a peaceful demonstration outside of City Hall Wednesday.“I’m standing here on behalf of my department to make sure the community understands that we are all together in this,” said Varso at the event. “We all condemn what happened to Mr. Floyd it should have never of happened, it was wrong, and I’m glad they’re being held accountable for it.”The organized demonstration included several speakers, including Yusef Miller of the Racial Justice Coalition San Diego, Rev.
