President Donald Trump suggested Friday that the federal government could play a role in a possible recount of Florida's close Senate and gubernatorial races."If you look at Broward and Palm Beach (counties) to a lesser extent ... they have had a horrible history," Trump told reporters at the White House before departing for Paris."And if you look at the person, in this case a woman, involved -- she has had a horrible history," Trump said. It was unclear to whom Trump was referring, but Republican Gov. Rick Scott, the Republican candidate for Senate, has called the female election supervisors in Broward and Palm Beach counties "unethical liberals.""All of a sudden they are finding votes out of nowhere," Trump said of the Senate race. The President said Scott had "won by a comfortable margin," but accused Democrats of attempting to pad their margins."Every couple of hours, it goes down a little bit," Trump said of Scott's lead.Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson has pushed for a recount given that he trails Scott by such a slim margin. If the candidates in either contest are separated by 0.5% of the vote or less, the state will automatically recount ballots.Trump tweeted Thursday evening that reported irregularities in Broward and Palm Beach counties amounted to "another big corruption scandal having to do with election fraud."The President said officials involved in the "phony dossier" about his campaign's contacts with Russia are involved in the recount efforts. He was likely referring to Marc Elias, the lawyer Nelson's campaign has reportedly tapped to handle the recount effort, as Elias was also a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's campaign and was involved in commissioning that dossier of opposition research from Fusion GPS.The race for governor between GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis and Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is also close enough that a recount is possible.The-CNN-Wire 1910

President Donald Trump's attorney-turned-enemy Michael Cohen is launching a podcast Monday, titled “Mea Culpa." He tells The Associated Press his first guest will be comedian and talk-show host Rosie O'Donnell. Once at odds, Cohen says he and O'Donnell have become friends and bonded as a result of the grudge they bear toward Trump. “First episode. First interview. First feud. First family,” Cohen told The Associated Press by phone late Thursday.Trump and O’Donnell have engaged in a lengthy public feud. Challenged during a presidential primary debate in 2015 about how he described some women as “fat pigs,” “dogs” and “slobs,” Trump responded by saying: “Only Rosie O’Donnell.”Cohen says his relationship with O'Donnell began while he was imprisoned for tax crimes, lying to congress and campaign finance violations. He says O'Donnell sent him a six-page letter. Cohen wrote an apology in response, which prompted O'Donnell to visit him in prison. 961

President Trump's Treasury secretary says most middle income Americans will get a tax break under the Republican plan brewing in Congress. But he stopped short of saying that break would be for all of them."By simplifying the code, we're putting everybody on a level playing field," Steven Mnuchin told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" on Sunday. "For most people -- and, again, it may not be 100 percent, but by far the majority -- both the House and Senate version provide middle-income tax relief."Mnuchin said that assessment is based on "hundreds if not thousands" of tests the Treasury has run on the bills.Mnuchin's comments came after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell walked back his claim?that "nobody in the middle class is going to get a tax increase" under the Senate's version of the reform plan.On Friday, McConnell told the New York Times that he "misspoke."Mnuchin also defended the tax plan from critics, including Larry Summers, the Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton. Summers called Mnuchin's tax cut estimates "irresponsible."Mnuchin on Sunday called those comments "unfortunate.""There are lots and lots of economists that come out and support our claims," he said. "We've been completely transparent. Different models will show different things."Mnuchin added that a middle-class tax hike is not what Trump wants. He said lawmakers will "fine tune" the plan before it heads to Trump for a signature.Tapper also asked Mnuchin about Trump's?claim?that the tax reform bill will bring "the largest tax cuts in the history of this country.""We've tried to find a way that this is true, but it's not," Tapper said, pointing to research that shows the tax break would rank, at most, as the 3rd largest in American history.Mnuchin qualified the president's statement, saying, "This will be the largest change since President Reagan."He also singled out the proposal to slice the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%."If that's not the biggest tax cut to make our businesses competitive, what is?" Mnuchin said. 2102

President Trump's first public reaction to the cancellation of "Roseanne" is a shot at Disney CEO Bob Iger."Bob Iger of ABC called Valerie Jarrett to let her know that 'ABC does not tolerate comments like those' made by Roseanne Barr," Trump tweeted Wednesday morning. "Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC. Maybe I just didn't get the call?"Jarrett was one of the targets of Barr's Twitter tirade early Tuesday morning.Barr compared Jarrett to "Planet of the Apes" and the Muslim Brotherhood, then claimed she was just joking. The tweet was widely condemned as racist.Jarrett, one of the most prominent African American women in politics, was one of President Obama's top aides. That's partly why Barr attacked her. Barr frequently uses her Twitter account to deride Democrats.Iger and Jarrett did not immediately respond to requests for comment about Trump's tweet.Trump is implying that he is the victim of a liberal media double standard. There are additional political overtones to the dispute since Iger seriously considered a 2020 run against Trump. He deliberated about it with friends and financiers last year, but ultimately decided against a run.It is true that Iger called Jarrett and told her about the decision to cancel "Roseanne" shortly before it was announced on Tuesday."He wanted me to know before he made it public that he was canceling the show," Jarrett said in an interview on MSNBC.Trump's tweet on Wednesday seemed to be influenced by an Entertainment Weekly recap of the interview. EW said that "Iger apologized and said he would not tolerate those kinds of comments made by Barr, Jarrett said."Earlier in the day on Wednesday, Barr reacted to ABC's decision by tweeting apologies and retweeting dozens of her fans. Some of the retweets promoted conspiracy theories and anti-ABC grievances.The-CNN-Wire 1918

Read the letter from now-suspended Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman apologizing for using a homophobic slur on-air Wednesday evening. As many of you know, I said something hateful on the air Wednesday night, something no one should ever say. Something that someone should ever think.Something that no one should ever feel.Something no one should ever hear.I could try to explain it or tell you about who I am and what I believe, but those things would all be excuses. The simple fact is, what I said was wrong.I used a word that is both offensive and insulting. In the last 24 hours, I have read about its history; I had no idea it was so rooted in hate and violence and am particularly ashamed that I, someone who makes his living by the use of words, could be so careless and insensitive. It’s a word that should have no place in my vocabulary and I will certainly never utter it again.I cannot erase what I have done. The only thing I can do is humbly apologize, accept the consequences of my actions, and resolve to be better and behave differently from now on.To the LGBTQ+ community – I am truly and deeply sorry. You should never be denigrated with crude and hateful language. I failed you and I cannot say enough how sorry I am.To the Cincinnati Reds and all Reds fans – You deserve better from me. I let you down and will work in whatever way I can to show that I am capable of learning from my mistakes and setting an example of which everyone associated with the Reds – management, staff, players, former players, and fans – can be proud. To Major League Baseball – Diversity is a strength of our game, and derogatory language has no place in the booth, on the field, or anywhere else for that matter. I am sorry for the shame I brought upon the game that has been so good to my family and me for nearly 50 years.I have spoken at length with Billy Bean, Vice President, and Special Assistant to the Commissioner of Baseball and an openly gay man, and Evan Millward, WCPO anchorman, who have been generous with their time and patience to help me understand the impact of my actions and provided me with resources to educate myself and work to become a more informed person. With their help, I am going to start improving my understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and not in a way to simply check a box to keep my job but to sincerely have an impact and change. I immediately plan to participate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training and have reached out to PFLAG for resources and guidance.Regardless of what my future holds in broadcasting, my actions have forced me to reflect on who I am and how I want to be seen and thought of. I realize it is more important than ever for us to treat each other with dignity and respect. I need to be better and I must set a better example. I hope the LGBTQ+ community, the Reds and their fans, and the people of Cincinnati can find a way to think better of me. With all the humility I can muster, I ask for your forgiveness. This story was first reported by Thom Brennaman at WCPO in Cincinnati, Ohio. 3065
