"We hope that China and the U.S. can treat each other as partners instead of rivals."Zhong said China is against the tendency to politicize bilateral economic and trade issues.Under the pressure of the election year and high unemployment rate, some U.S. senators last week proposed a legislation to press China to appreciate its currency.The bill requires the U.S. Treasury Department to identify countries with "fundamentally misaligned currencies" and asks the Commerce Department to investigate currency undervaluation as a " countervailable subsidy."Meanwhile, 130 U.S. congressmen wrote to the government, demanding the Obama administration take actions to appreciate the RMB against the dollar."The RMB exchange rate is not the root cause for U.S. trade deficit with China or key to U.S. unemployment," Zhong said.He said that the economic structures of the two countries are highly complementary. UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' top humanitarian official on Wednesday rejected as "insulting" and untrue reports about the Chinese search-and-rescue team in Haiti."I don't believe there is any truth in these accusations ... that the search-and-rescue teams favored international members of the community rather than Haitian nationals," John Holmes, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, told reporters at UN Headquarters."I think it was done in an overall fair way," he said.The Chinese team "did take the lead" in looking for the missing people in the Christopher Hotel and also looked elsewhere, he said."I really don't think that accusation of favoritism stands up at all," he said. "I think, frankly, it is insulting to the people who were doing that ... to suggest that.""As far as I know, they (the Chinese team) did an extremely effective job. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police nationwide were urged Friday to tighten security and step up safety overhaul during the Chinese Lunar New Year and be "ready to handle emergencies to prevent serious accidents."A circular from the Ministry of Public Security told local police authorities to increase scrutiny of fireworks parties, trade fairs, lantern shows, and temple fairs during the Spring Festival holiday which starts Saturday.It said the police should assist in keeping public and traffic order around large events' venues and be ready to handle crime and emergencies.Efforts should be made to strengthen security measures around train stations.
