BEIJING, Feb.7 (Xinhua) -- China's railway network has transported 5.03 million passengers as of Feb. 6, the eighth day of the country's annual Spring Festival transport peak lasting from Jan. 30 to March 10 this year, said the Ministry of Railway (MOR) Sunday.The figure was 105,000 more than that in the same time last year, up 2.1 percent year on year, according to the MOR. Passengers enter the railway station under a shelter against the rain in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, Feb. 7, 2010. NANJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua)-- China and Japan have the opportunity to further develop their relationship through cooperation in a wide range of areas, an advisory panel on China-Japan relations said here Tuesday."Bilateral ties have an opportunity to develop as the two governments attach great importance to bilateral ties and are committed to long-term, stable, friendly, and cooperative relations," the fifth 21st Century Committee for China-Japan Friendship said after their first meeting.The committee, an advisory panel to both nations' governments, convened a three-day meeting in China beginning Sunday to discuss various aspects of China-Japan relations and to provide suggestions to the two governments."Members have discussed bilateral cooperation from a strategic point of view and have reached a fruitful outcome," the Chinese chair of the panel, Tang Jiaxuan, said.The committee agreed China and Japan should aim for cooperation in the post-financial crisis world and step up partnership in environmental protection and low-carbon business. Chinese members proposed building a recycling economic zone in Caofeidian, in north China's Hebei province.Telecommunications, bio-medicine, new materials and clean-fuel vehicles are also fields in which the two sides can work together.Another field for cooperation is culture, the panel said, stressing the importance of exchanges between media professionals and intellectuals in the two countries.Chinese members hoped visa procedures to enter Japan will be further simplified, young writers will have more opportunity for exchange, and that an arts festival on Buddhism is established.The committee suggested cooperation in Asian integration, including the building of a financial security network and speeding up research on the setting up of a free trade zone covering China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea."Japan is willing to work with China to strengthen mutual cooperation in various fields and improve understanding between peoples of the two countries," said chair of the Japanese side, Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) president Taizo Nishimuro

LHASA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of Tibetans, dressed in traditional costumes, made pilgrimages to temples to pray for a peaceful and prosperous new year on Sunday, the first day of their traditional New Year.The Year of the Iron Tiger in the Tibetan calendar began on Feb. 14 this year, exactly the same date as the Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year. BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- China should further step up efforts to implement the plan to adjust and reinvigorate some of the country's key industries, according to an executive meeting of the State Council held on Wednesday.The meeting was chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.Progress has been made in 2009 for adjusting and promoting key industries, however the situation remained grave as weak global demand was still affecting China's economy and more efforts were needed to curb overcapacity in some industries, according to a statement released after the meeting.To combat the global economic downturn, China in 2009 adopted a massive plan to adjust and reinvigorate the country's ten key industries covering cars, steel, information technology, logistics, textile, nonferrous metal, equipment manufacturing, petrochemicals, shipbuilding as well as light industry.The implementation of the plan was a long-term task which should focus on the structure adjustment and development mode transformation of the ten industries, said the statement.Vigorous efforts should be made to expand domestic demand, optimize industrial layout, curb overcapacity, eliminate retrograde productivity, push company merger and restructuring, promote technology innovation and deepen reform to facilitate development mode change, it said.
