TIANJIN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- China has full confidence and capability to overcome various difficulties to ensure sound and fast economic growth for an even longer period of time, said Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday.     Addressing the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Davos Forum in the north China port metropolis of Tianjin, Wen said China is in the stage of rapid industrialization and urbanization, and has huge potential for economic growth. The important period of strategic opportunities for China's development will last quite a long time.     Despite the heavy snow and sleet storms and the devastating earthquake and a complex situation both at home and abroad the nation faced, China have overcome difficulties one after another and maintained the momentum of steady economic growth.     "There are many favorable conditions for China to maintain sustained and fast growth, such as abundant supply of labor and capital as well as huge potential of increased domestic consumption and investment demands, vast market and more competitive and dynamic enterprises," said Wen.     The demands for investment, consumption and export are growing in a more balanced way. The economic fundamentals in China remain unchanged and the economy is moving in the direction envisaged in the macro-economic control policy, he added.     The two-day forum, also known as the New Champions 2008, has attracted about 1,400 participants from nearly 90 countries and regions, including business elite and senior officials, to discuss topics about the theme "The Next Wave of Growth". BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here on Thursday with ex-French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and urged the French government to work with China to put bilateral relations on a healthy and stable track.     Wen said France was the first Western power to forge diplomatic relations with China, and also the first European Union (EU) member state to set up a comprehensive strategic partnership with China.     China valued its friendship with France, which was fostered by leaders of several generations from both nations and by the two peoples, Wen said. He hoped France would work with China to push forward the healthy and stable growth of bilateral ties in line with the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.     He clarified the truth behind violent crimes in Lhasa and other places, and stated China's stance on this issue. BEIJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw 86 "blue sky" days, or days with fairly good air quality, in the first four months of this year, a sign that years of anti-pollution efforts made by the Olympic host city continue to pay off.     The number of "blue sky" days was 11 more than the same period of last year, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection.     The Chinese capital recorded 67 blue sky days in the first quarter, 12 more than in the corresponding period last year.     Meanwhile, major pollution indices, including concentrations of sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matters in the air, kept dropping markedly.     Beijing has input 120 billion yuan (17.1 billion U.S. dollars) in improving the air quality in the past years, and the number of "blue sky" days increased to 246 last year from 100 in 1998, when the capital launched the "blue sky" drive.     Meanwhile, Beijing's neighbouring municipality Tianjin, the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi and Shandong, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are lending a hand to the capital to attain anti-pollution goals. These efforts include closing major polluters, removing outmoded cabs and reconditioning gas stations to capture harmful chemicals.     Beijing aims to have 70 percent of the days up to standard this ear, which meant there should be at least 256 blue sky days.     It has been working to reduce pollution and improve the air quality to ensure a "Green Olympics."     For example, the municipal government cut public transport fares in an attempt to lure local residents out of their private cars, which could cut auto emissions. The city also converted 18,000 outdated coal-fired boilers and installed electrical heaters in 20,000 detached houses, replacing coal-heated devices.     Beijing is also considering traffic controls during the Olympics, in which drivers with even- and odd-numbered license plates, except taxis, buses and emergency vehicles, would only be able to drive on alternate days. Offenders would be fined.     During a test of this proposal conducted from Aug. 17-20, about1.3 million cars were taken off the city roads each day and the amount of pollutants discharged was cut by 5,815.2 tons, according o a report by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection.

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- From anti-terrorism drills to halt of flights during the opening ceremony, Beijing is taking every possible measure to ward off terrorism and ensure security for next month's Olympic Games.     China Civil Aviation Administration announced on Tuesday a new move for Olympic security that no planes would be allowed to take off or land at Beijing Capital International Airport from 7 p.m. to midnight on Aug. 8, the night of the Games' opening ceremony.
