LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Christmas gatherings can’t go ahead and non-essential shops must close in London and much of southern England as he imposed a new, higher level of coronavirus restrictions to curb sharply spreading infections. Johnson said the capital and other areas in southern England will move to an even stricter Tier 4 alert category that requires non-essential shops, hairdressers and indoor leisure venues to close after the end of business hours Saturday. Johnson also said that a planned five-day easing of socializing rules that would allow up to three households to meet in “Christmas bubbles” will be canceled for Tier 4 areas. In the rest of England, people will be allowed to meet in Christmas bubbles for just one day instead of five, as the government originally planned.“It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you we cannot proceed with Christmas as planned,” Johnson said.A fast-moving new variant of the coronavirus that is more than 70% more transmissible than existing strains appears to be driving the rapid spread in London and southern England, Johnson said. LONDON — The British government says it won’t be using 50 million face masks it bought during a scramble to secure protective equipment for medics at the height of the coronavirus outbreak because of safety concerns.The masks were part of a 252 million pound (2 million) contract the government signed with investment firm Ayanda Capital in April. Papers filed in a court case reveal that the masks will not be distributed because they have ear loops rather than head loops and may not fit tightly enough.The government says another 150 million masks supplied by Ayanda are unaffected but are still being tested.The papers are part of a lawsuit against the Conservative government by campaigning groups the Good Law Project and EveryDoctor.As the coronavirus outbreak accelerated across the U.K. in March, it became clear that the country lacked sufficient stockpiles of masks, gloves, gowns and other protective gear for health care workers and nursing home staff. Lorenzo Liberti is a teenage flag maker."The day that I stop working is a day that a hero could be forgotten," says the 15-year-old from Lakewood Ranch.Using pinewood and prodigious talent, Lorenzo works day and night in his garage hand-carving Heroic Flags, gorgeous, time-consuming tributes to American heroes he sells and donates to help people in need."As long as you're living, you're here for a purpose," he says.Lorenzo has only been creating the flags for the past eight months or so. He's made about 50 so far and raised thousands of dollars for children with special needs, homeless veterans, and Bradenton's Turning Points nonprofit."This is bigger than me," he says.The pandemic has inspired Lorenzo's newest mission: honoring medical workers across the country.He's raising money to try and get one of his flags in a hospital in every state: 50 flags, all across America.
