SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city of San Diego is making sure its homeless students have the right tools to succeed in school.One San Diego’s “We’ll have your back campaign” is distributing thousands of supplies to the San Diego School District’s less fortunate students.Officials estimate more than 6,000 students are homeless in the district.“A lot of these kids don’t get anything new and that’s why we make it is possible,” said Katherine Stuart-Faulconer, the wife of San Diego Mayor Kevin Falconer.One San Diego will have several more similar events and drives this year. 579

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The County of San Diego has spent nearly million to support migrants after the federal government ended the Safe Release Program, according to county officials.Flights carrying between 120 to 135 people are now flying from Texas to San Diego to relieve the processing backlog in the Rio Grande Valley sector in Texas. That sector is 200 percent over capacity, according to acting San Diego Border Patrol Chief Doug Harrison. So far, 10News has confirmed at least two flights have arrived in San Diego. It is not clear how many migrants, if any, will ultimately need county support. This latest round of migrants from Texas are first processed through Border Patrol before Immigration and Customs Enforcement takes over the processing. ICE told Team 10 custody is determined on a "case-by-case basis."Organizations like the San Diego County Rapid Response Network along with the County have stepped in since the end of the Safe Release Program. The program provided asylum seekers resources like transportation until their scheduled immigration court appearance. In a federal lawsuit filed in April, the County blamed the federal government saying "the County has suffered" and the move has "unfairly shifted the... burdens to the County and its residents."RELATED: Border officials say migrants from Texas being transferred to San DiegoProjected county costs for supporting migrant services totaled more than .65 million. Immigration is clearly the responsibility of the federal government, but now it’s sticking San Diego County with the bill. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show continued Tuesday in Del Mar.The Board that oversees the fairgrounds is reviewing the show that has been hosted at the fairgrounds for the last 28 years.A pro-gun, second-amendment political action committee collected more than 3,100 letters in support of continuing the show in Del Mar.The letters were given to the board for review and consideration. Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners is pushing is pushing for the board to renew the shows contract with no restrictions or limitations."It took us less than a week to collect all these signatures, we could have gotten more. Some are written by entire families who come to the show every year. It is a family event with almost a 30 year history with Del Mar," said Schwartz. Protesters also made an appearance at the board meeting dressed in orange and asking the board to cancel the shows current contract.The Del Mar, Solanna Beach and Encinitas city councils have approved resolutions calling for a ban on the gun shows at the fairgrounds.Guns can be purchased at the show, but California law requires extensive background checks and a waiting period.The board will make a decision to cancel or continue the gun show at it's board meeting in September. 1329

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The famed Jessop's Clock that has rested in Horton Plaza since the center opened has been removed.Tuesday, the clock was moved into temporary storage, though the location is not being revealed, according to Jim Jessop, former owner of Jessop's Jewelry, a plaza mainstay for 125 years before closing in 2017.Upon announcing the closing of Jessop's Jewelry, the plaza asked Jessop to move the clock.RELATED: Grocery chain suing Horton Plaza over millions in sales lossesIt's likely the clock, constructed in 1907, will remain in temporary storage for a couple of years until its new location's lease is signed, Jessop says.The fact that its current location is being kept secret may be due to security concerns.
