BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- China continued a five-day military exercise on Wednesday as the country's air defense forces carried out reconnaissance, early warning, electromagnetic interference and ground-to-air attack drills.More than 12,000 Chinese military personnel, along with seven types of military aircraft divided into Red and Blue rivals, took part in the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010,"-- which started on Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong Provinces.On Wednesday morning, the Blue forces used reconnaissance planes and electronics warfare aircraft to conduct surveillance and jam the network systems used by the Red forces for command and communications as well as reconnaissance and early warning.A ground-to-air attack drill began at Wednesday noon, as the Blue forces launched unmanned aerial vehicles, fighters and helicopters to attack their rivals.The ground-to-air attack drill will last overnight till 6 a.m. Thursday, military sources said.

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government Monday strongly condemned the hostage-taking of Chinese tourists by a former police officer in Manila and demanded the Philippine government thoroughly investigate the incident. A bus with 21 Hong Kong tourists aboard was hijacked in the Philippine capital of Manila Monday morning. After negotiations, six hostages were freed. On Monday night, Philippine police launched a rescue operation and a number of hostages were killed and injured.In a press release, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had telephoned his Philippine counterpart Alberto Romulo on the hostage-taking incident.During the conversation, Yang said the Chinese government had been highly concerned over the incident and had asked the Philippine government to spare no efforts in carrying out the rescue operation under the prerequisite of guaranteeing the safety of hostages.Yang said that the Chinese government was shocked about the incident, deplored the slaying of Hong Kong tourists, and strongly condemned the brutality against innocent tourists.The Chinese government demands the Philippine government launch a thorough investigation into the incident and inform the Chinese side of related details as soon as possible, he said.The Chinese government also demands the Philippine government do all it can to save the injured hostages and properly handle the remaining problems of the incident, Yang said.

PARIS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Legislative bodies of China and France launched their regular parliamentary exchange mechanism on Thursday, vowing to further push forward the Sino-French comprehensive strategic partnership.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, jointly declared the beginning of the first meeting of Sino-French Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.Wu said the launch of the high-level meeting between the two legislative bodies signals the Sino-French parliamentary exchanges were promoted to a new stage.Accoyer said the regular parliamentary exchange mechanism could serve as an important platform for both nations to exchange views on mutual concerns and promote bilateral cooperation in politics, technology, new energy and environmental protection.Ahead of the meeting, Wu and Accoyer held talks on bilateral ties and parliamentary cooperation.Accoyer said France attached great importance to Wu's visit as Wu is the first Chinese top legislator that visited France in 13 years.France regards China as a strategic partner, expecting to expand all-round strategic cooperation with China, boost coordination on international issues, through joint efforts against global financial crisis, climate change and other challenges, he said.Wu said his ongoing visit to France is aimed to build a closer relation between the Chinese NPC and the French National Assembly. MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China has played a role of great importance during the founding and development of G20, Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich said on Monday."Without China's participation, it would be much more difficult for the group to discuss or solve the developmental problems of world economy. Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. The nations, however, should understand the common and mutual responsibilities in the global economic system.The delegates to the G20 summit will adjust their polices after consultations, but nobody will bend under pressure, he stressed.Dvorkovich said that several countries may voice concerns over China's exchange rate policies at the summits, but there will not be large-scale discussions over the Chinese currency.The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, announced on Saturday a decision to proceed further with the reform of the exchange rate regime to enhance the flexibility of the RMB's exchange rate.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) said Monday it would work to help 1 million job-seekers find jobs this year, as well as provide vocational training for an additional 1 million people.Also, the ACFTU will provide training and job opportunities for 200,000 housekeeping workers this year, said Li Shouzhen, spokesperson with the ACFTU, at a meeting of the national union's executive committee.The ACFTU has launched a five-year campaign of vocational training to help improve the skills of workers, Li said.The ACFTU has been working to protect migrant workers' rights and recovered 2.5 billion yuan (366.03 million U.S. dollars) of defaulted salaries for migrant workers in the first half of the year, Li said.The national union, founded on May 1, 1925, had a membership of 169.94 million, with migrant workers accounting for 24.1 percent of the total, in 2007.ACFTU chairman Wang Zhaoguo said at the meeting that trade unions at various levels should work to protect employee rights to ensure stability.The meeting stressed the importance of the collective wage negotiation system and seeks to implement its use in wage discussions between businesses with trade unions by 2012.
