BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council reached a decision at an executive meeting on Wednesday to promote a new type rural social pension pilot projects.     The meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, said building a new rural social pension system was key to reducing rural poverty and narrowing the gaps between urban and rural areas. It was also key to maintaining social stability and promoting domestic consumption.     According to the meeting, the new-type rural social pension pilot programs will be carried out in 10 percent of counties this year. Rural residents above the age of 16 are all eligible to join the program.     The meeting also ordered local governments to strengthen supervision of pension funds.

VIENNA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo and Austrian President Heinz Fischer met here Friday afternoon, agreeing to further expand cooperation on bilateral and international issues in face of the global financial storm.     Wu arrived in Vienna Friday morning for an official goodwill visit to Austria. He is the first Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) who visited Austria in the past 15 years. He said China is ready to expand friendly contact between the governments, parliaments and political parties of the two countries on a basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.     Wu said the two countries should enhance mutual understanding and trust so as to deepen cooperation in various fields and carry out closer coordination and communication on international affairs.     Fischer appreciates the responsible stance and measures that China has taken in addressing international financial crisis. He said the financial crisis has caused great impact on every country in the world and required joint effort of all countries in addressing it.     Wu briefed Fischer about China's policy measures to address the financial crisis and maintain stable, fast economic growth.     Both sides agreed that despite differences on such issues as Tibet, they should join efforts to bring in a new era of bilateral relations.     Fischer reiterated that Austria will as always stick to the one-China policy, which is a consensus of all political parties in Austria. This stance will never change under any circumstances.     Wu appreciated Fischer's statement and reiterated China's principled stance on the Tibet issue.     On China-EU relations, Wu said both sides should firmly support each other's development by joining hands to address global challenges, including financial crisis and climate changes. He said the two sides should join efforts to curb trade and investment protectionism and maintain rapid growth of trade and economic cooperation.     Wu hopes Austria will play a constructive role in advancing China-EU relations.     Fischer expressed the belief that Wu's visit to Austria will help enhance friendship and advance cooperation in all fields between the two countries. 

BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of China's manufacturing sector stood at 53.2 percent in June, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) said Wednesday.     The figure was up 0.1 percentage points from May, when the index fell 0.4 percentage points from the previous month.     A reading of above 50 suggests expansion, while below 50 indicates contraction.     The PMI includes a package of indices that measure economic performance. The survey, conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics, covers purchasing and supply managers at more than 700 firms across China.     The output index was 57.1 percent, up 0.2 percentage points from a month ago. The new order index fell to 55.5 percent from 56.2 percent in May and 56.6 percent in April.     The purchasing price index climbed 4.7 percentage points to 57.8 percent, the seventh monthly increase since December.

HAIKOU, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao said that the infrastructure in south China's Hainan Province should be improved to make tourism a pillar of the island's economy. Wen made the remarks during a weekend visit.     Developing tourism amid the global downturn would do much to boost economic growth and employment and expand domestic consumption, he said. BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The nearly 10 billion yuan donation from the Communist Party of China (CPC) members would all be used for the reconstruction of China's quake zones, the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee said Saturday.     As one of the relief efforts after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake battered southwestern China on May 12 last year, some 45.5 million CPC members donated 9.73 billion yuan (1.43 billion U.S. dollars) as "special membership fees" for the quake victims.     So far, nearly 90 percent of the fund had been allocated to the quake regions, and the rest would also be appropriated according to procedures, the department said in a statement.     The money was spent on rebuilding schools and subsidizing survivors among others, it said
