COPENHAGEN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Tuesday that China, a developing country, has taken important measures in reducing its emission of greenhouse gas.     "China has also taken quite important measures by cutting forty to forty-five percent of energy intensity by 2020," Ban said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.     Ban arrived here earlier on Tuesday to open a high-level segment of the conference, which entered its ninth day of negotiations on a new global deal to push forward the fight against climate change.     The UN chief said he was fully aware of particular challenges faced by developing countries, in particular poor countries, calling on rich countries to improve their commitments in climate financing.     The climate change negotiations were now in a critical but difficult situation as developed countries and developing countries remain divided on key issues, including climate financing.     Developed countries have been reluctant to provide financial support to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. So far, they only indicated to give 10 billion U.S. dollars annually in the three years between 2010 and 2012.     Ban said developed countries should go beyond the fast-start support and also address medium and long-term financing scaled up to needs.     "I have been urging that developed countries should begin discussing the medium and long term financial support packages," he said, calling on all countries to overcome national interests or interests of any particular groups.     "That would be one of the keys in bridging the gap between developed and developing countries," he added.     Speaking at the same press conference, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was encouraged by China's move to set national targets of reducing greenhouse gas emission.     "I am very encouraged by the fact that China has proposed, at this stage, nationally binding targets for mitigation which deviates from business as usual," he said.     But he added China should translate those national targets into some kind of international language.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Friday that China hopes to advance the strategic cooperative partnership with the Republic of Korea (ROK).     "We will work with the ROK to increase friendly exchanges at various levels and enhance pragmatic cooperation in various sectors," Hu told Kim Hyong-o, speaker of the ROK National Assembly.     Hailing the smooth development of China-ROK ties in recent years, Hu said the leaders of the two nations had maintained frequent contacts, exchanged views often and reached broad consensus on important issues.     "This gives strong impetus to the growth of bilateral relations," Hu noted. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao made five proposals on promoting Sino-U.S. relations and tackling delicate issues of common concern while meeting with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama in Beijing Tuesday.     Obama, who is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China, agreed with Hu on the proposals, reiterating that the United States does not seek to contain China's rise and that he welcomes China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     FURTHER STRATEGIC MUTUAL TRUST     Hu called on the two countries to continue to increase strategic mutual trust with prerequisite of respect for each other's core interests and major concerns.     He hailed Obama's statement that the United States sticks to the one-China policy and hoped that the United States would "properly handle" the Taiwan issue and forbid "Tibet independence" and "East Turkistan" forces from using U.S. territory to cover their anti-China separatist activities.     In Hu's words, China and the United States should not be opponents, but partners that trust each other and cooperate sincerely.     "The development of China is an opportunity for all nations, including the United States," Hu said. "It is not a challenge, let alone a threat."     MAINTAIN EXCHANGES AT ALL LEVELS     Hu said China and the United States should maintain different levels of communication and consultation on major issues in a timely manner through different channels, including exchange of visits, talks and meetings on multilateral occasions.     The two countries should further substantiate the results of the first round of Sino-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue and start soon to prepare for the second round of talks in Beijing next summer, Hu said, calling the dialogue an important platform to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.     STEP UP MACRO CONTROL     It is "necessary" for China and the United States to step up cooperation on coordinating macro economic and financial policies, pushing forward reforms in the international financial system and improving global economic governance structure, Hu said.     He also raised the issue of trade frictions, voicing hope that the United States would loosen restrictions on its export of hi-tech products to China as soon as possible, while recognizing China's market economy status and facilitating expansion of trade and investment cooperation.     "Under the current circumstances," Hu said, "the two countries should more resolutely oppose and resist trade protectionism in any form."     ADVANCE EXCHANGES, COOPERATION IN VARIOUS AREAS     The other areas proposed by Hu for further cooperation between China and the United States include infrastructure, climate change and clean energy, and exchange of students.     He said China is willing to work with the United States on space exploration and construction of high-speed railways.     The two sides should take the launch of the joint clean energy research center as a turning point and deepen cooperation on energy saving, emissions reduction, renewable energy and treatment of environmental pollution, Hu said.     China is also willing to increase counter-terrorism cooperation with the United Stats on a basis of mutual benefit and hold dialogues with the United States on issues of human rights and religions based on the principle of equality, mutual respect and non-interference with each other's internal affairs, said Hu.     WORK TOGETHER TO MEET GLOBAL, REGIONAL CHALLENGES     Hu proposed that the two countries should continue to work together on global and regional hot issues in light of the benefit gained in recent years by cooperating on climate change, nuclear non-proliferation, crackdown on transnational crimes, disaster relief and prevention and treatment of contagious diseases.

ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China views Ethiopia as its major economic and trading partner in Africa, says Minister of Commerce Chen Deming on Monday.     The bilateral trade volume reached a historical high of 1.376 billion U.S. dollars during the first 11 months of last year, up 12.4 percent over the same period of the previous year, said Chen, adding that China's imports from Ethiopia during that period rose 202 percent to over 200 million dollars.     During his talks with Sufian Ahmed, Ethiopia's minister of finance and economic development, the Chinese minister said China's investment in Ethiopia had accumulated to 138 million dollars in areas like textile, daily necessities, machinery, glass, building materials and leather.     By the end of November last year, Chinese firms in Ethiopia had accumulated a turnover of engineering contracts with nearly 4 billion dollars, said Chen, who arrived here on Monday for a two-day visit.     Chen put forward a four-point proposal on further development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation: First, further expanding its imports from Ethiopia through the use of tariff-free policies; Second, strengthening cooperation in investment and engineering contracts and continuing to encourage strong Chinese firms to invest in Ethiopia; Third, fully implementing the eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa; Fourth, further promoting cooperation in official development assistance to support Ethiopia's infrastructure, and projects aimed to improve people's well-being.     For his part, Sufian expressed his thanks for China's long-term official development aid to Ethiopia.     The Ethiopian minister said trade deficit with China has improved significantly and China has become Ethiopia's biggest trading partner.     Sufian spoke highly of China's eight new measures to enhance cooperation with Africa, saying that Ethiopia would work together with China to fully implement the measures.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Baosteel Group, China's leading steelmaker, announced on Monday its acquisition of 15 percent stake in Aquila Resources, an Australian iron ore and coal company.     The 286 million Australian dollar purchase (265 million U.S. dollars) has made Baosteel the second largest shareholder of Aquila, said the Chinese company based in Shanghai.     The transaction is an important strategy for Baosteel's overseas expansion by securing long-term supply of critical raw materials for its steel making business, said the company.     The deal will help the Australian company source low-cost financing from Chinese institutions to support its projects.     Tony Poli, executive chairman of Aquila said on the company website, "The company now looks forward to developing its relations with Baosteel to the mutual benefit of both companies."     The deal was approved on November 13 by China's top economic regulator, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and it was Baosteel's first large strategic investment in a foreign public company.     The two companies signed an agreement on the acquisition in August this year and got nod in October by Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB), which limited Baosteel's stake in the Australian company to the utmost 19.9 percent.     Under the terms of the deal, Dai Zhihao, a vice president of Baosteel, will step in as a board member of the Australian coalminer.
