(KGTV) — Newly released video shows the moment a Portland high school coach disarmed a student who brought a loaded shotgun to school in May.Keanon Lowe, Parkrose High School's head football and track coach, was in a classroom full of students when the gunman, identified as Angel Granados Dias, came in with shotgun on May 17, 2019, according to Portland police.In the video, Lowe brings Dias into a school hallway after appearing to disarm the student. Lowe is seen holding the shotgun before handing it off to another staff member. The coach continues to hold the student and embrace him in a hug, as the staff member leaves with the firearm and students flee from the classroom.Lowe, a former Oregon Ducks football player and NFL coach, says he lunged for the gun with both hands inside the classroom when he realized what was happening.The coach said he told Dias he was there for him and that his life was worth saving. Investigators say Dias was suffering a mental health crisis and only intended to hurt himself, Portland ABC-affiliate KATU reported."Then it was just me and that student. It was a real emotional time. It was emotional for him, it was emotional for me," Lowe told KATU in May. "In that time, I felt compassion for him. (KGTV) - The state Supreme Court started hearing oral arguments Tuesday in San Francisco over San Diego’s pension changes that were approved by voters six years ago.More than 65 percent of San Diegans voted for Proposition B, the "Citizens Pension Reform Initiative" which switched most new city workers to a 401(k) plan instead of a guaranteed pension.Ever since then the measure has been challenged by labor unions. The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) has been trying to overturn the pension cutbacks in court and now it’s in front of the state Supreme Court.The court will review the Fourth District Court of Appeal’s 2017 ruling on the issue.The focus then was on whether former San Diego city leaders illegally put Prop B on the ballot because they did not meet and confer with the labor union first. The appellate court ruled in favor of the city then.Now, political analyst John Dadian says if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the labor union, the city could be upside-down millions of dollars, directly impacting taxpayers.“Taxpayers should be very scared,” said Dadian.  “They could have to go back and retroactively give the original pension benefits to the new 3,000 employees and that would be horrendous.”Dadian says there is still hope for the city if the court rules in favor of the union.“If it rules against the city they have several options, they could craft a new one (prop) to go back on the ballot and it could possibly go to federal court,” said Dadian.After Tuesday’s hearing, the court has 90 days to make a ruling. 1575

A 3-year-old girl was found safe after spending almost 24 hours in the woods on her own.Abby Ladwig went missing August 9, along with her family’s dog Peanut. Abby lives in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, in the northern section of the state and surrounded by forests. Local media reports the girl walked away while her father stepped inside for a few minutes.Her mother, Lisa Koch, posted on Facebook along with pictures of Abby and Peanut. In her initial post, she asks for help in finding Abby, who was last seen walking with the dog. 539

(KGTV) -- The massive fire at the famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is hitting a San Diego school especially hard. Children at the Notre Dame Academy in Carmel Valley recently visited the sacred site during a school trip. Francesca Pinney, who is in 8th grade, said stepping inside such a holy place is something she will never forget."I remember it being an incredibly majestic and beautiful cathedral and it was incredibly inspiring to my Catholic faith being able to see this in person," said Francesca. The mood at the school on Monday afternoon was one of sadness and shock. "During Holy Week, the fact that the cathedral is burning down is just truly awful. It's so tragic," said Francesca, who visited Paris last year. Other classmates visited the famous attraction in just the last few weeks. Clare Deloux, a 7th grader, is one of them. She was stunned to learn about the massive fire that captured headlines around the world. "I was in shock. I didn't expect this to happen. It's very sad that this is amazing and that history was made even building that, " said Clare. The loss is also personal to their teacher. Marielle Hacher is from Paris. "It's a symbol of France and Catholic France for all the Catholic. It's very sad to see that it is burning, and hopefully, they gonna restore it," said Hacher.The students have already decided to use their next service project to raise money to help with the restoration; meanwhile, they will continue to pray for the people of France.
