KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The oldest living U.S. Marine celebrated her 107th birthday over the weekend.The U.S. Marine Corps wished Sgt. Dorothy “Dot” Cole a happy birthday in a special video posted on Facebook on Saturday.The USMC says Cole was born on Sept. 19, 1913 in Warren, Pennsylvania, and enlisted in the Marine Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.“Everyone was out doing something, the women helping The Red Cross or even in churches, they were knitting things, so I decided that I wanted to do something and I would go into the Marine Corps,” said Cole in the video.Cole was part of a female integration into what were considered male-dominated career fields within the Marine Corps during World War II, according to the USMC. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - When you think of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a polling place probably doesn't come to mind.However, maintaining the security of our elections is a major function of the agency."One of the most important things we do is to protect citizens' constitutional right to vote," C.J. Sanders, an FBI Supervisory Special Agent, said.The FBI accomplishes this by working with the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Postal Inspection Service, secretaries of state and local election officials.According to Sanders, the FBI will set up command posts in Kansas City, Jefferson City, and Topeka to respond to any allegations of voter fraud.It's the same set up the agency has utilized in previous elections, and Sanders emphasized voters should have confidence in the system, even if more people are voting by mail this time around."There's not much different this year than we've had in years past," he said, "We've always had mail-in ballots and voting in person with the machines."According to experts at the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan policy group at New York University, 25 percent of all votes were cast by mail in the last two federal elections."Mail ballots are paper ballots. That means we do have an opportunity to audit all of those ballots," Lawrence Norden, Director of the Brennan Center's Election Reform Program, said.As always, the FBI will investigate reports of voter fraud, like multiple voting, false registration and stolen mail-in ballots.Sanders said there were some fraud reports in 2016 and 2018, but none were prosecuted federally.One of the biggest election concerns for the FBI actually originates outside our country."In years past obviously we've seen other countries try to influence voters through misinformation, trying to sow discord and undermine confidence in government," Sanders said.About a year ago the agency created an internal task force comprised of counter-terrorism, counter-intelligence, criminal and cyber experts who routinely meet to share information about foreign influence.The agency notifies Twitter and Facebook when threats, like bots spreading misinformation, are identified.Examples of the misinformation include telling voters they can vote online or by text, which are not options for casting a ballot.It's important to note that the following are not instances that should be reported to the FBI:Candidates campaigning too close to the polls. (KGTV) - A Jamul couple made a heartbreaking return to what remains left of their home, destroyed by the Valley Fire.Late Saturday afternoon, Irving and Anita Beeman shot cellphone video from the back yard of their home on West Boundary Truck Trail."The smoke blowing straight above our our house, so I knew we were in big trouble," said Irving Beeman.The fire seemed a good four to five miles away, but that changed quickly."In about 15 seconds, it went over a quarter mile ... The flames were between 100 and 200 feet tall," said Irving.Irving scrambled to a ridge and peered over."Looked like waterfall of fire from the top of the ridge to the bottom of the valley. A wind vortex or something took it straight down to valley floor," said Irving.Anita left first, while Irving left in another vehicle soon after. The couple only had time to load up what amounted to a truck bed of belongings. A photo taken by Irving shows his property, as it began burning."We watched it catch fire and then tore out of there," said Irving.The next day, the couple got back to their property, and their fears were realized. Their home of 20 years was no more. One of their trucks and their son's van were destroyed."Just devastating. Still had been holding out hope," said Anita.Buried under the remains of their home, were boxes containing the ashes of Anita's parents. In the rush, it didn't get packed."In the middle of night, you think of things that are gone, things you couldn’t save," said Anita."I would wake up and saw her crying. Just hugged her. Not much you can say. Just hug each other," said Irving.They'll continue to lean on each other, as they begin their long road to recovery."It'll be real tough to rebuild, but we’re going to," said Anita."We’re very grateful we’re alive and have a chance to rebuild," said Irving.The couple's home was insured.
