I was part of the problem then, I consider myself part of the solution," said Jose Venegas, a co-founder, and Program Coordinator at Writerz Blok. During his teenage years, Venegas turned to graffiti. "It was that or gang bang really, to be honest, I grew up in a neighborhood where there was a lot of gang activity, a lot of drugs."A twist of fate led his friends to tag a vacant property in Southeast San Diego owned by the Jacobs Center. Rather than make the teens someone else's problem, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation embraced them, donating the space and funding materials. "We encounter a lot of youth who show artistic expression but have never had a mentor or seen professional artists doing murals, graffiti," said Bennett Peji, Vice President of Impact and Partnership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Their mission is to foster a thriving community envisioned and realized by its residents.“The identify of a place should really reflect the the community that lives there but that’s not often the case," said Peji. Jacobs Center donated the property and funded materials to make the Arts Park a reality. Writerz Blok artists have able to help hundreds of teens and they now do workshops in high schools as well as the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Center."It's a very soothing feeling, it's like therapy," said Venegas. They say health concerns aside, the state has made getting into a field office to complete requirements impossible.Although many DMV tasks can be completed online, the agency requires an in-person visit for several types of service. Once drivers hit the age of 70, the DMV requires them to renew their licenses in-person to take vision and knowledge tests.The DMV has granted drivers aged 70 and up a four-month extension to renew licenses, but only for licenses that expire through July 31. But the DMV isn’t offering new appointments, as it works through the backlog of visits that were canceled during the months-long closure. According to Cal Fire, the fire poses no threat to the U.S. at this time. The agency said, however, it is monitoring the situation and will send a response if the fire threatens San Diego County. Steven and Michele Smith were on board the Grand Princess cruise ship, which docked in Oakland Monday after more than 20 passengers tested positive for coronavirus. They were flown to San Diego Wednesday. Nearly 500 passengers are now being quarantined at the base. The Smiths are symptom free but frustrated. They've been in the same clothes since Monday. Their luggage is missing, after a possible mix-up with the baggage of passengers sent to other bases. The Smiths sent 10news photos of a laundry room they're not allowed to use and a lobby full of unclaimed luggage."Ours had a blue tie on it and none of those in the lobby have a blue tie. Somewhere the deck got shuffled and our luggage went wherever," said Steven Smith.They Smiths believe lack of resources and organization are also causing issues. They haven't been tested for coronavirus and have yet to receive a temperature check."Our friends being quarantined at the others bases are getting two temperature checks a day ...
