Luckily, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has a program to ensure San Diegans have peace of mind leaving their homes behind. The department offers free vacation checks year-round. From there, Senior Volunteer Patrol members keep a watchful eye of homes while residents are away. Check out the list below to see what services are provided: Security inspections around your home Monday through Friday Check your home for broken windows, open doors, garages or other suspicious cluesHide newspapers and packages in your side fence or back patioCall for a deputy’s assistance if there is a problemProvide a welcome letter upon the resident’s return listing the dates the home was checked and observations made during the visitRELATED: Major storms could disrupt trips on one of the busiest travel weeks of the year"Especially if you're out of the country for some time, it's really nice to know that somebody's looking out for your property," says Tom Beltz, one of the volunteers who does the checks.If there is a problem, the volunteers call Sheriff's Deputies to come check out the home.Beltz adds that one of the biggest services they offer during the holidays to make sure packages don't get stolen."If we find packages on the front porch, and if there's a backyard entrance for us to go through, we take those packages and put them in the back yard," says Beltz. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego businesses are still waiting for any information on the resumption of indoor services, such as indoor dining, and the long wait has some frustrated and at a breaking point.“The first five years were hard, but I never thought it would be a pandemic that brought me to my knees,” said Yuda Phia, who has owned Time Out Sports Tavern in downtown San Diego for 10 years.Piha and wife Sarah got married days before the pandemic forced the shutdown, and the restaurant's first closure.Sarah Phia explained the extra measures they've taken to meet or exceed the guidelines laid out the first time they reopened, including Plexiglas dividers and staff retraining.Sarah, a graphic designer, made the signage throughout the establishment that enforced mask wearing and social distancing.Setting up tables on the sidewalk isn't really an option for Time Out, which is located downtown on Broadway near 7th Avenue along a busy two-way street that gets constant bus and truck traffic and has narrow room for patrons.County officials have said they expect new state-directed timelines in the coming days for reopening businesses, but Supervisor Jim Desmond said Tuesday that he doesn't know what they will be.Desmond has advocated for the safe reopening of businesses, but he said the county’s hands are tied as control lies in the governor's hands. The decision is also entirely independent from the state’s watch list, which San Diego County was removed from on Tuesday.The orders were issued concurrently, but not together, so there is no automatic trigger point when businesses would reopen.Desmond wishes the state would reauthorize local control so that the county could make some reopening decisions independently going forward. 1758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan made a push Monday to remind residents that there are still resources for domestic violence victims during the stay-at-home order.Stephan did not have any data to show whether domestic violence cases have started to rise yet. However, she pointed to a case on Sunday where police say a husband killed his wife while their three children were home as an ominous example."The Chula Vista case is a tragic example. One loss of life is one too many for us," said Stephan.RELATED STORY: Chula Vista Police searching for homicide suspect on the runPolice have identified the victim as 35-year-old Natalia Uriarte. Her husband, Francisco Uriarte, fled the scene and remained at large as of Monday afternoon.The DA's office has set up a website that has a list of resources for those afraid of or suffering from domestic violence.Stephan said because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the women's shelters are offering hotel vouchers to reduce potential for the spread of coronavirus.Residents can also call the county's resource hotline at 2-1-1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Padres outfielder Tommy Pham is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after breaking a bone in his left hand during the team’s loss at Arizona Sunday.Padres skipper Jayce Tingler confirmed Pham’s injury during an appearance Monday on MLB Network Radio.The injury happened during Pham’s ninth inning at-bat in Sunday’s game. The left fielder/DH fouled off a pitch and then immediately shook his left hand in apparent pain.Following a visit from the trainer, Pham exited the game, forcing the Padres to put Greg Garcia in to finish the at-bat in the eventual 5-4 loss. The Friars' loss was their fifth in a row.At the time of his injury, Pham was the tied for the MLB lead in stolen bases with six and among the league leaders in walks.
