HONOLULU, United States, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that China will deepen economic structural reform, grow a green economy, enhance protection of intellectual property rights and open wider to the outside world.Hu made the remarks at the CEO summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ahead of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.Hu noted that while China's economy has grown steadily and the country is opening wider to the outside world, China still faces the major challenge of unbalanced, uncoordinated and unsustainable development.China, he said, will continue to deepen reform and opening-up, improve people's livelihood and promote sustained, steady and fairly fast economic growth and social harmony and stability.Hu then laid out a four-point proposal to achieve the goals, with the first being that China will deepen economic structural reform and improve business and investment environment.Second, China will honor its commitment to growing a green economy and promoting the conservation culture, Hu said.From 2011 to 2015, China's investment in the environmental sector will double that of the previous five years to about 3.1 trillion yuan (about 488.5 billion U.S. dollars), Hu said, adding that China's green industry is a key area for foreign investment.Third, China will step up protection of intellectual property rights and make itself a country driven by innovation, he said.China will vigorously boost scientific and technological innovation and turn enterprises into major players of such innovation, while further improving the legal system for intellectual property rights protection, he said.Fourth, China will open wider to the outside world and take an active part in global economic governance and regional cooperation, Hu said.China, he said, will give equal importance to import and export and focus more on increasing import while maintaining a stable level of export.Noting that China's development constitutes an important force driving regional and global economic growth, Hu said that China will work together with others to create a better future for the Asia-Pacific region.

VIENNA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A sculpture of late Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was presented to the UN Office in Vienna (UNOV) Friday to celebrate "50 Years of Human Spaceflight," the theme of the World Space Week 2011.In 1961, Gagarin completed an orbit around the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft, serving as a pioneer of human spaceflight.The sculpture is a gift from the Russian government and would be placed at the Permanent Exhibit of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).Attendants of the ceremony include UNOV Director-General Yury Fedotov, UNOOSA Director Mazlan Othman and Head of the Russian Permanent Mission Vladimir Voronkov."Outer space is one of the most exciting and challenging topics, and perhaps of all the important topics on the agenda of the United Nations, none quite captures our imagination like outer space," Othman said in her statement.Meanwhile, speaking highly of Gagarin's achievement 50 years ago, Fedotov stressed that the purpose of the development and utilization of outer space must be to the benefit of all mankind.The UN official said that relevant UN agencies would provide technical assistance to all countries to develop outer space and ensure the benefits in peaceful purpose.On Dec. 6, 1999, the 55th United Nations General Assembly declared the World Space Week to be held every year during Oct. 4-10.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will be honored posthumously with a Grammy award for his contributions to music technology, The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday.Jobs, who passed away Oct. 5 of pancreatic cancer, will receive a Trustees Award for helping create products "that transformed the way we consume music, TV, movies and books," the academy said in a prepared statement.The Apple Computer Inc. first received a Technical Grammy Award in 2002, for contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field, the academy said.Along with Jobs, bandleader and composer Dave Bartholomew, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder will also receive the award.The academy also picked the Allman Brothers, Glen Campbell, Diana Ross and Brazilian pianist/singer/guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim as recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards. BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The amount of trans fat and other nutritional information will be marked on the labels of prepackaged food, according to the country's first national standard for food nutrition. The labeling will take effect on Jan 1, 2013. "It will help standardize the nutrition facts labeling by food producers and facilitate consumers' rights to know and choose, while improving public awareness of food nutrition," said Yang Yuexin, a senior nutritionist with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The new regulation by the Ministry of Health stipulates that food labels have to include the food's nutrition information, including levels of energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and sodium. Food products without proper labels showing the nutritional information will be banned when the new rule takes effect. The new regulation also stipulates that if any hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fat is used to produce the food, the level of trans fat will have to be highlighted on the nutrition information label. Trans fat is usually produced during food processing when liquid oils are converted into semi-solid fats that help keep food fresh longer. However, the partially hydrogenated oil contains trans fat that can substantially increase the risk of heart disease. However, Zhang Jian, a researcher with CDC's National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety, said that compared to Western diets, the Chinese diet contains a far lower level of trans fat and there is no need to over react.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The United States Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday published a patent application from Apple related to face and presence detection for iOS devices, which is expected to be one of the next chapters for mobile security.According to AppleInsider, a news and rumor website focusing on Apple, the patent is entitled "low threshold face recognition" which is a low-computation solution for quickly and accurately recognizing a user on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and MacBook.Patently Apple, a blog focusing on Apple's latest intellectual properties, said that iOS devices would acknowledge the presence of the potential user by turning on the display and then trigger a subsequent process for recognizing the potential user's face.Currently, most face recognition systems tend to be robust ones working in various lighting conditions, orientations, scale and etc., which will require computing resources and drain battery life. There are also security-type face recognition systems working under controlled lighting conditions which could be ineffective due to factors like proximity of the user to the camera.Google's latest Android 4.0 operating system, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich, already features face detection. But it is reported that the feature doesn't always work and can be bypassed by using a photograph of the phone's owner.Apple's solution would reduce the impact of lighting conditions and biometric distortions on an image, said AppleInsider, citing the filing. Apple said it would rely on a "high information portion" of a human face, such as eyes, mouth or the tip of a user 's nose.The "likely presence" of a human face in front of the camera would be captured through an "orange-distance filter" which would also be used to detect the potential user's skin tone and measure the distance of their face from the camera.Meanwhile, iOS devices could also be set to recognize faces of multiple users, presenting each user with a personalized configuration.According to AppleInsider, the patent application was first filed by Apple in June, 2009.Analysts said that the proposed technology could be Apple's next big innovation as it has record of redesign and give its unique appeal to products that have not caught on with the general public.
