British comedian Eddie Izzard announced during a television appearance last week on a British competition show that she would be using she/her pronouns going forward. The comedian shared the decision during an appearance on Sky Arts' "Portrait Artist of the Year," while appearing as the subject for a portrait, USA Today reported.According to NBC News, while talking to a competitor, Izzard said this was the first time she'd asked if she can be 'she' and 'her' and said it "feels great" being able to use the pronouns because "people just assume."Izzard added that she wants to be based in "girl mode from now on."Izzard, who came out as transgender in 1985, according to Vanity Fair, has spoken about coming out as gender fluid during an interview with the Windy City Times in 2019, NBC News reported. The show aired Thursday, but praise and support rolled in for the Izzard over the weekend."Thanks for allowing us on this adventure with you, Eddie, and for encouraging others to live their life openly and authentically!" the Human Rights Campaign tweeted. 1067
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has criticized grocery store chain Wegmans and several other chains for allegedly selling coconut milk made from fruit harvested by abused monkeys.According to PETA, monkeys are "forced to climb trees to pick coconuts" for coconut milk made by the brand Chaokoh. The company says that Wegmans is one of the few grocery store chains still selling the product. In an open letter to Wegmans CEO Colleen Wegman, PETA claimed that an investigation by the organization found that coconut growers in the industry were harvesting fruit with monkeys that were "confined for life, sometimes with their teeth removed, always on chains, and often driven insane from being deprived of everything that's natural and important to them."PETA also added that it is delivering "humanely obtained: coconuts to Wegmans this week.In response, Wegmans said that PETA had sent letters to several other retailers regarding the coconut milk, and added that the store is "actively investigating the matter."In July, the Thailand-based maker of Chaokoh coconut milk, Theppadungporn Coconut Co. Ltd, told Reuters that it had audited more than 100 of its coconut plantations by a third party and that none were found to use monkeys in the harvesting process.Theppadungporn added that following PETA's reports of forced monkey labor, sales fell between 20% to 30% from last year.According to Reuters, PETA has rejected the Thai government's claims that the use of monkeys in harvesting coconuts was almost "non-existent."See the letter from PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk to Wegmans CEO Colleen Wegman below.Dear Ms. Wegman,Greetings from PETA. I hope this message finds you well. We've sent you these coconuts in the hope of cracking open some dialog about reconsidering your business relationship with Chaokoh, a brand sold by your company and implicated in a recent PETA Asia exposé of Thailand's coconut industry. This investigation revealed that Chaokoh is complicit in an industry that's forcing monkeys—confined for life, sometimes with their teeth removed, always on chains, and often driven insane from being deprived of everything that's natural and important to them—to collect coconuts. It seems that monkeys used in the coconut industry are illegally captured in their natural habitat as babies. Then, they endure abusive training. Investigators visited "monkey sc

British officials have authorized a COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, greenlighting the world’s first shot against the virus that’s backed by rigorous science and taking a major step toward eventually ending the pandemic. The go-ahead Wednesday for the vaccine developed by American drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech comes as the virus surges again in the United States and Europe, putting pressure on hospitals and morgues in some places and forcing new rounds of restrictions that have devastated economies. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency recommended the vaccine could be used after it reviewed the results of clinical trials that showed the vaccine was 95% effective overall — and that it also offered significant protection for older people.“Help is on its way,″ British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the BBC. “We now have a vaccine. We’re the first country in the world to have one formally clinically authorized but, between now and then, we’ve got to hold on, we’ve got to hold our resolve.”Hancock later added that the country expects to receive the first shipment of 800,000 doses “within days″ and will begin distributing shots soon afterward.According to The Associated Press, England will first distribute the vaccine to people over the age of 80, people in long-term care facilities and health care workers. Government officials believe the vaccine will be widely available sometime in the spring.Pfizer and BioNTech have shattered records in developing their vaccine. The fastest a vaccine had previously been developed came in 1967 when the mumps vaccine was developed in four years. Pfizer and BioNTech have only been working on their COVID-19 vaccine candidate since the start of the pandemic. 1757
