Of all the campaign slogans for 2020, Allison Ali is following motherly advice from her childhood.“My Mama always said, ‘if you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice,’” she said. “So, it’s put up or shut up.”Ali is taking those wise words on the road and also taking voters to the polls for free.“It’s important to me, because everybody needs to be heard,” she said.This election season, Ali is one of hundreds of people working for the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America during a campaign called “Roll to the Polls.”“We have a real opportunity to impact the elections,” said NACA CEO Bruce Marks.Marks’ team has 100 vans in Atlanta and 50 more in Houston with a goal of getting 100,000 voters from their houses to their polling locations free of charge.“It is very emotional because we’ve been through a lot,” Marks said of these free rides. “We’ve seen the voter suppression and we’ve seen how people’s rights are taken away. So, it’s crucial that everybody’s voice is heard.”Across the country, rideshare apps, colleges and even some concerned citizens are offering voters free rides to the election sites.While some political science experts warn that free rides could be used as a way to manipulate voters, others are calling it a sign of inspiration.“I want to do my part, honestly, to get them out,” said Atlanta-based voter Pamela Chaney, a self-described vibrant senior.Chaney says this election is the most crucial of her lifetime and that’s why she’s now thinking about volunteering to drive voters to polls, especially those in her community, where public transportation isn’t an option.“A lot of people probably want to come out, but they don’t have the means; transportation. They’re probably elderly,” she said.According to the American Association of Retired People, 71% of Americans over the age of 65 voted during the last presidential election, a group Ali hopes to steer clear from any of kind of voter suppression.“We have people who think their votes aren’t going to count,” she said. “They don’t think the mail is going to get their in time. That’s a scary thing.”While behind the wheel, Ali is still following her mother’s advice and driving down a road that others helped pave the way.“We have ancestors that fought for us to be able to come out here and vote,” she said. “This election for me is very important.” 2355

OAK PARK, Mich. — The city of Oak Park, Michigan will host its annual Boo Bash Halloween event next Wednesday, but they are not allowing anyone to come as a clown.On the event page, the city says people can bring children in their favorite Halloween costumes, collect candy down the trick-or-treat street and enjoy cider and donuts. They also say that clown costumes are not allowed.Oak Park Recreation Director Laurie Stasiak told the Oakland County Times the ban stems from fear and anxiety over clowns for some children."In the past few years, many clown costumes have been given a very scary and evil look. Many scary and horror movies are centered around these types of characters. About three years [ago] there were national incidents in the news where people were dressing up as clowns and scaring people and in some cases assaulting them," she told the Oakland County?Times. "Many people have phobias and anxiety about clowns. It’s because of this that we asked people not to dress up as clowns for this community event.” 1067

Oceanside (KGTV): The Main Attraction is getting ready for its last dance.The popular topless bar, the last of its kind in the North County, was recently sold. Developers now plan to turn the land it sits on, as well as more than 5 acres around it, into a mixed-use housing project.Papers filed with the City of Oceanside Planning Department show plans for a five story, 308-unit complex that also includes 4,000 square feet of street front retail stores and a six-story parking garage. Wood Partners and Lightfoot Planning Group filed the plans.The land sits just west of the 5 freeway near the intersection of North Coast Highway and Costa Pacifica Way. A vacant lot covers most of the 5.3-acre parcel. A few abandoned warehouses and the strip club stand as the only buildings around."It is exciting," says Leslee Gaul, the CEO of Visit Oceanside. "It’s part of the renaissance in our community, and I think it’s a great location."Gaul's office is right across the street from the topless bar. She works in the California Welcome Center. The Main Attraction is the first thing most visitors see when they get off the freeway in Oceanside.Gaul says the club has been a good neighbor, but she's ready for the change."It’s been a low key, positive relationship for many years," she says. "But as things change and our community changes, this is part of that."Homes within the complex will range from a 550 square foot studio to 1,550 square foot townhomes. The majority of the 308 units will be either one or two-bedroom apartments. Meanwhile, the plans from the developer say residents will have modern amenities, including "an indoor‐outdoor social lounge with pool access and catering kitchen, a fitness center, an artist center, bicycle room, and surfboard storage." There will also be a 5th‐floor deck with an ocean view.Phone calls to the developer, the city and the topless bar weren't returned this week. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) – A father and his young son were hospitalized after a fire erupted at their mobile home in Oceanside.The fire was reported Tuesday at around 10:30 p.m. at a mobile home park on 251 Blue Springs Lane, according to Oceanside Fire officials.Witnesses told ABC 10News that the blaze started in the back of a mobile home, trapping a man and his son inside.As flames engulfed the home, some neighbors tried to put out the fire by spraying water from garden hoses.However, one neighbor heard banging coming from a window and a call for help. That neighbor got to the window, smashed it, and was then handed the boy by his father. Moments later, the neighbor helped the father crawl through the broken window.Responding firefighters were able to knock the fire down within 20 minutes. No other homes appeared to have been damaged by the blaze.ABC 10News learned the child was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation.The boy’s father was transported by helicopter to UC San Diego’s Burn Center with burn injuries and cuts from the broken window.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 1146

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- For as long as he can remember, Pino Batallico loved the atmosphere of restaurants. He shared a picture with 10News of him working behind the bar of a restaurant in Italy when he was 8-years-old. He made 25 cents a week.Batallico was born and raised in Italy. All his relatives are still in his home country. He is devastated to see how the Coronavirus pandemic has affected it, with more than 12,000 deaths so far.“I think it’s very scary. It breaks my heart,” Batallico said. In Oceanside, he is feeling the effects of the pandemic through his restaurant Venetos. Pino and his employees still cook up good meals for anyone who wants them.“It doesn't matter if I have a penny or not. I'll still be here,” Batallico said. He said his business is down about 75 percent since the countywide order that prohibits dine-in service at restaurants. He is trying not to lay off any of his 11 employees, although he has had to cut his restaurant’s hours. The restaurant is a place he loves with customers who love him back.“He’s like a brother from another mother!” said customer and now friend, Jesse Teves. Teves said he met Batallico more than 20 years ago. Teves has celebrated important milestones over the years at Pino’s former restaurant in Encinitas and now at Venetos. “He's very humble. He always looks out for the customer,” Teves said. “It just naturally happened that we bonded and he became family.”Batallico said he will cook any Italian dish the customer wants, even if it is not on the menu. Like so many others, he is trying to survive with take out and delivery orders.“Whatever you like to do, we will do for you… to be safe,” Batallico said.His restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Monday and Tuesday, it is open from 4 to 9 p.m. 1803
