SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) — Hundreds gathered in Santee on Saturday to call for justice for women of color.A flyer for the march advertised "promoting black and brown unity" and justice for Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillén.Breonna Taylor was an EMT who was shot and killed during a no-knock warrant against her boyfriend at her home in March. No drugs were found in her apartment.Vanessa Guillén was a 20-year-old Army specialist who disappeared in April from Fort Hood in Texas. Remains believed to be hers were found near the Army post in July, sparking protests over the military's handling of sexual harassment allegations.A section of Mission Gorge Rd. was blocked off by police for the planned protest. Counter-demonstrators also assembled in the area.One of the demonstration's organizers told ABC 10News that they hope their calls for racial justice are heard by Santee's City Council leaders."Santee has its things, it's known as being racist, and I'm here to change that. That's the goal," said Alana, one of the organizers with East County BIPOC, who adds that she is born and raised in Santee. "We tried to work with City Council and we tried to be a part of a diversity committee, and it was kind of just brushed under the rug. Nothing ever happened."The group is also calling for City Council to create a diversity committee led by people of color, for Santee Mayor John Minto to denounce the Defend East County Facebook group, and to meet with San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain Christina Bavencoff.One demonstrator told ABC 10News, "our message is that minorities can be safe here. I grew up here and there is racism but there's also perks to living in Santee. The community, when they accept you, can be good. But also for minorities, to feel comfortable and to expand all of our minds and to open up about Black Lives Matter as well."In regards to counter-protesters, the demonstrator added, "We're not here for them. SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Two people are dead and multiple others are injured following a church stabbing in San Jose, California late Sunday.Police say the stabbing happened at Grace Baptist Church. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Santa Clara County announced its first coronavirus death Monday. According to the county’s public health department, the person who died was a woman in her 60s who was hospitalized for several weeks. The woman was the first person in Santa Clara County to test positive for COVID-19 without any known history of international travel or contact with a traveler. Scott Thompson never thought making other people smile would be so much fun.“I never thought it would be awesome for myself too. You know, I didn’t know that I would be as happy it as I am," Thompson said.But it’s never too late for an old farmer to learn a new trick.“We started out with a small field, about three or four acres,” he said. Scott and his wife own Thompson Strawberry Farm in Wisconsin, normally a pick-it-yourself berry farm. But because of COVID-19, they decided to plant a field of sunflowers so people could come get out of the house, enjoy the sunflower fields and smile.“People are going to need a release. People are going to need a place to go and we’re just fortunate that we have that opportunity to give it to somebody,” said Thompson.But one field turned into another.“Then we put in three or four more fields,” said Thompson.Turned into 2.2 million sunflowers.“It just kind of added up and kept going and kept going so I just kept planting,” said Thompson.The sunflowers are helping people get out of the house during the pandemic“We just wanted some sunshine in corona, it’s an easy activity to do that’s not in doors,” said Kate Kronstein, who was visiting the field with her mom. “Road trip. But Scott says you can do more than just pick sunflowers while you’re here.“Everybody just seems like they have their little niche of what they want to do. I bet we’ve had five or six different proposals, we’ve had wedding photographers, we’ve had senior pictures, family pictures, so we’re really just trying to spread that fun for everyone,” said Thompson.And when you leave, they want you to take two things with you: some sunflowers and a smile.“It made me happy, and it just gave me a reminder that there’s still sunshine out there, even with everything going on,” said Kronstein smiling as she got ready to leave. 2149
