SPRING HILL, Fla. -- A Florida mother was arrested on Wednesday after deputies say she left her 3-year-old son home alone while she went out drinking. Hernando County deputies responded a home in Spring Hill after receiving a tip that a child was at the home without supervision. Deputies attempted to contact the 3-year-old boy around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. When deputies arrived they saw Kristen Broker, 27, being dropped off at the home. The deputy asked Broker if she knew the child. Broker told the deputy that he was her son. The deputy then asked if she knew whether or not the child was in the home alone.Deputies say that Broker told them that she knew the child was home alone. She told them that he was sleeping inside.Deputies found the young boy awake inside the home. He was in a queen sized bed with no guardrails, according to HCSO. "[The boy] appeared to be scared as to where his mother was," HCSO wrote in a press release.Deputies say that the only other adult who lives at the home was Broker's boyfriend, who was at work.Broker told deputies that she was at a local bar. Deputies say she appeared to be extremely intoxicated. She told deputies that she had been drinking since 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to HCSO.Broker said she had consumed some rum and cokes and some beers, according to HCSO. Deputies say that she claimed she was only gone for "30 minutes," and that her son was asleep when she left.The child was clearly awake when deputies arrived at the home.Deputies say that Broker appeared almostBroker didn't appear to think it was an issue to leave her child home for any amount of time, according to the arrest affidavit.Broker was arrested on one count of child neglect, booked into the Hernando County Jail under a ,000 bond. Special Counsel Robert Mueller spoke publicly for the first after his office's two-year investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.Mueller, who did not conclude the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government, also declined to clear President Trump of obstruction of justice. "If we had had confidence that the president did not commit a crime, we would have said so," Mueller said. Mueller cited a longstanding justice department policy that a sitting president cannot be charged with a crime. It's based on an interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believes the allegations against Alabama Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore and that Moore should leave the race, the Kentucky Republican said Monday."I believe the women, yes," McConnell told reporters in Kentucky.McConnell, the Senate's top Republican and a frequent target of Moore on the campaign trail, said, "I think he should step aside."Last week, The Washington Post published a bombshell report based on interviews with more than 30 people, saying Moore pursued relationships with teenage women while he was in his 30s. One woman said she was 14 years old when Moore initiated sexual contact with her.Moore has denied the allegations, and on Sunday night, he claimed he would sue the Post.The report increased pressure on Republicans to disavow Moore, who was already controversial due in part to his history of racially-charged and homophobic commentary.In the immediate wake of the story, some Republicans, like Arizona Sen. Shannon Chaney is as familiar with uncertainty as most Vermonters are to changing leaves each fall."We sort of white knuckle our way through life until bedtime," said Chaney.She moved to Vermont from Louisiana after surviving Hurricane Katrina.“COVID is different from a natural disaster, but you still kind of have to get out of bed in the morning and just get on with it," she said.Her uncertainty now, like millions of Americans, is at the dinner table.“We have two kids who go through a lot of groceries," said Chaney.Chaney's husband works full-time, but her job has been on hold through much of the pandemic.“My pride doesn’t feed my kids,” she said.Multiple nights a week across Vermont, there’s proof that in uncertain times, communities stand strong to help people who are food insecure like Chaney.“Food for me is such a source of comfort,” said Stephanie Bonin.Bonin helped start “Everyone Eats” with some of Vermont’s federal coronavirus relief money. The program provides help for those in need of a meal and those who need to make them.“For me, it was a dream to open up the restaurant," said Nash Patel.Patel and his wife, Leda Scheintub, opened Dosa Kitchen in February. Weeks later, the pandemic forced them to close.“You want to be realistic. None of us have lived through a pandemic before," Scheintub said.They say there were times they worried if the restaurant would have to close forever, but they are open again.Everyone Eats pays for 350 meals a week to be handed out.Right now, it's most of Dosa Kitchen’s business.“About 75%," said Scheintub.To use federal money, the meals must have some local ingredients, helping farmers get their crops into kitchens.Groups like Food Connects bring crops from nearby farms to restaurants that make hundreds of meals that are handed out each week."Restaurants know how to feed people and the community loves and appreciates our local restaurants. And our restaurants know how to buy from farmers," Bonin said.Everyone Eats has created a balance, but one that’s at risk.“We’re worried about the CARES Act money drying up," said Bonin.Bonin is working on a path forward for the program if Congress doesn’t pass another stimulus bill. There is enough money for it to run through the end of the year.After that, Everyone Eats faces the same problem of uncertainty as so many of the people it helps.“At the end of the day, you have two or three, however many you have, of mouths, looking at you, saying ‘I'm hungry,’" said Chaney. 2496
