SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A camp in Vista is giving kids a place to cope with the loss of a loved one, along with others on the same journey.Experience Camps provide boys and girls whose parent, sibling or primary caregiver has died, with a program that helps build confidence, encourages laughter and allows them to navigate their grief through friendship, teamwork, athletics, and the common bond of loss.The nonprofit provides the experience free for families. "My mom she was really, really nice. I loved her with all my heart. When she passed, it was devastating," said 13-year-old Dylan from San Diego.Dylan's mother died of breast cancer. "It was really tough, but once I got here it was really good to know that other people had the same experience," said Dylan.This is Dylan's third year at camp. He and others are gaining coping mechanisms to navigate their grief better. "The common experience we all have is grief, and I think that's the strongest bond between all of us," said Amit Sura, a camp counselor. A typical camp day includes two activity periods, such as volleyball, tennis or arts & crafts. The third morning period is focused on different techniques in the bereavement toolkit, built to help the campers identify, express, and understand their feelings. Later in the day campers take part in a camp-wide activity, such as relay races or a hike up a nearby mountain. The camp comes together again during free swim, dinner, and an evening activity before retiring to their bunks."Today we did a mindfulness activity, talked about sitting with emotions like anger, happiness, sadness," said Sura. "When they're here, and everybody's sharing their experiences and their emotions, it's a bond that's unbreakable."Experience Camps has five locations across the country, serving boys and girls.Families can register in November.The nonprofit relies on donations to send children to camp for free, you can donate here. 1940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A customer at a downtown flooring warehouse found a man dead inside the business Wednesday afternoon, according to San Diego Police.First responders arrived and performed CPR but could not resuscitate the man.According to police, homicide detectives were called to the 1000 block of G Street around 4 p.m. to investigate the death.Ghedeer "Tony" Radda, 49, the owner of the business, suffered traumatic injuries to the torso, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs, but it was unclear if he'd been shot or stabbed.Police said surveillance cameras captured two suspects running from the area. They have yet to determine a motive.Police said one of the suspects is a man seen wearing a mask resembling an older woman with gray hair. He was also wearing a gray jacket and dark pants. The second suspect is a woman last seen with purple hair police say may be a wig. She was also wearing a dark jacket and blue jeans. Radda leaves behind a wife and two young children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of San Diego Star Wars cosplayers are committed to charity work, not galactic control.Dressed as the "bad guys" of the Star Wars universe, the Imperial Sands Garrison can be found visiting children in the hospitals or supporting fundraisers. The group tries to attend more than 150 events a year."There's nothing better than going up and getting a high-five from the kids," says local commading officer Todd Mullen.Though over 100 strong, the Imperial Sands Garrison is only part of a much larger network. The 501st Legion spans worldwide with over 13,000 members. It has united Star Wars fans since 1997. 640

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of San Diego City College students are hoping their fundraising efforts will help them get to a national STEM conference in Hawaii later this year. The students are a part of the club called SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science), a chapter of a larger, national organization. The club works with students K-12 to teach them about the career opportunities in STEM. The conference offers research opportunities, tips to improve networking skills and workshops about cutting-edge research. SACNAS takes place in October of 2019 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
