As health experts warn about rising coronavirus cases from spread at indoor gatherings, a new website backed by recent research is trying to help people understand just how many people in what size space is risky for infection. If people are calm and quiet, it is safer than singing or exercising no matter how distant they are.Given these types of scenarios, and the “rapidly advancing science” of how COVID-19 droplets behave, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created the COVID-19 Indoor Safety Guideline application.Here’s an example:An average suburban house that is 2,000 square feet, with 25 people inside wearing cotton masks and talking in a whisper, can reduce their risk of transmission by only staying inside for 4 hours.If those same 25 people, in the same house, are not wearing a mask and are talking normally, the length of time to reduce transmission drops to just 50 minutes.And if those 25 people, in the same house, are singing along to Christmas music, without masks on, that time to safely reduce COVID-19 transmission indoors drops even further to just 8 minutes.If the size of the gathering is only 5 people, and there is still singing, no mask wearing, and it’s still a 2,000 square foot house, it becomes unsafe after just 27 minutes.The MIT website offers users the ability to select room size, number of people and length of time, then using previous research and scientific knowledge of airborne viruses, it predicts the risk of the indoor event. If the restaurant has 100 people, to reduce transmission risk, they should only remain inside for 64 minutes.The researchers note current general social distancing guidelines (remain 6 feet apart) suggest 138 people would reduce their risk in the same size of space for an indefinite amount of time.Another example, a Boeing 737, the researchers’ model predicts 100 people can be onboard a 737 wearing masks and still reduce their risk of transmission by staying onboard less than 6 hours.The CDC updated their guidance about COVID-19 this fall, acknowledging ongoing research that shows coronavirus droplets “can remain suspended for many minutes to hours (in the air) and travel far from the source on air currents.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also says coronavirus droplets can remain even when an infected person has left the room and can travel farther than six feet. 2800

American Airlines is taking its long-grounded Boeing 737 Max jets out of storage, updating key flight-control software, and flying the planes in preparation for the first flights with paying passengers later this month.The airline invited press reporters and photographers on board one of the planes Wednesday to demonstrate its confidence in the plane’s safety.All Max jets worldwide were grounded in March 2019 after the second of two crashes that together killed 346 people. In the meantime, the airline plans flights with employees on board.Some relatives of people who died in the crashes — and who still believe the plane is unsafe — expressed outrage at both Boeing and American over what they termed a publicity stunt.Zipporah Kuria, a British citizen whose father died in the second Max crash, said Boeing and the FAA should instead turn over documents on changes made to fix the plane and how they were tested. The company has withheld the documents, saying they cover trade secrets.“I feel like Boeing is using the press to leverage public trust instead of actually genuinely earning public trust,” she said. “I’m really disgusted by the whole thing and the fact that American Airlines would pay for that. Their focus is more about the profit and corporate interest than it is about consumer safety.”Some people who lost family members believe that the FAA erred by not accepting all the recommendations made by pilots and aviation professionals during a public comment period on its proposal to let the plane fly again.Scrutiny of the plane has focused on a flight-control system called MCAS, which repeatedly pushed down the nose of the plane before both crashes. Boeing, which describes changes to the plane on its website, and the FAA say the system has been made less powerful and easier for pilots to override.Some of the family members, however, wanted a deeper, nose-to-tail review of the plane. And they don’t trust Boeing or the FAA, which allowed the plane to keep flying after the first crash, in Indonesia in 2018.“It hasn’t been evaluated to the point where we can say that it’s safe,” said Nadia Milleron, whose daughter was killed in the second crash, which occurred in Ethiopia. “This plane hasn’t flown very much with this new software, the revamped MCAS, interfacing with the plane. It’s not responsible for them to put you on this flight.”Chicago-based Boeing said Wednesday it has flown more than 1,400 test flights on updated Max planes. The FAA said its people put in 60,000 hours reviewing and testing Boeing’s work.American is likely to be the only U.S. carrier using the Max for several weeks. United Airlines expects to put the plane back in its schedule during the first quarter of next year, with Southwest following in the second quarter. Regulators in Europe and Brazil have cleared a path for their airlines to resume Max flights in a few weeks.It’s unclear whether the flying public will accept the plane or avoid it. Some industry officials believe that fear of getting on the plane has lessened with time. Americans aren’t exercising like they used to.“I’ve definitely been walking a whole lot less since the coronavirus hit,” Nathan Martin said.With social distancing orders put into place, the pandemic has many people spending more time at home.“I was a little bit less active and more Netflix,” Hannah Hockensmith said.Now, a new study is showing this drop in physical activity is increasing health concerns across the globe.“COVID-19 is a worldwide phenomenon unlike anything else we’ve seen in generations,” said Dr. Geoff Tison, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco.Tison recently finished a new study using smartphone apps to track the step counts from almost half a million people in countries worldwide.The data was collected from mid-January to early June and the findings show the world is walking a lot less.“Within the first month of the pandemic, declaration activity decreased by about 27%,” he said.Tison says this lack of physical activity could damage people’s health, especially in older adults.“With decreased activity, increased sitting on the couch, just not being as active is muscle mass can start to decrease as can bone density,” he said.In America, the study shows the biggest drop in step counts happened in New York City while Dallas had the smallest decrease.“The changes in activity seem to reflect adherence to social distancing at least to a degree,” Tison said.To increase exercise indoors, Tison says is all about thinking outside the box.“You can do similar exercises, work similar muscles with things around the house,” he said. “Use a gallon of milk instead of a dumbbell.”To exercise outdoors, however, Tison believes changes need to happen at the city and state levels.“Policy makers, governments need to be creative understanding that people are humans and want to be active and want do things,” he said. “But to enable them to do that safely.” 1913

  

As hundreds of homeless wait to return to the Alpha Project tent in downtown after it was flooded last week, San Diegans are stepping in to give them a little holiday cheer.ABC 10News reporter Natay Holmes was at SDCCU Stadium on Sunday morning where a local photographer, Abe Barron, and a group of kind-hearted volunteers, donated food and treats to those in need.Their mission is called "X-Mas on the Street." The group got together to make 800 tamales to hand out, along with some festive Christmas cookies. Barron and the volunteers will be at the stadium today until noon. Anyone else wishing to donate to the Alpha Project today can visit Gate C through today.The Alpha Project shelter expects to be at the stadium for another week. 748
