And that wasn’t the case," Dr. Adalja said. "The virus established itself in the human population and is not going to go anywhere until there is a vaccine.”Dr. Adalja says any amount of social interaction will be taken advantage of by a virus like this, especially if people aren’t wearing masks. Studies show a growing number of people can get infected and spread the virus without showing any symptoms. But he says the key to preventing more outbreaks is contact tracing.“There’s no way that we can move forward unless we determine where these undetected chains of transmission are and halt that, and you can only do that with robust contact tracing,” Dr. Adalja said.Other countries in Asia and Europe have had effective efforts in contact tracing. So the question is, why does the U.S. fall short? Experts say there are several reasons. Dr. Sandy Johnson directs the Global Health Affairs program at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He says the U.S. has a fairly complex political system.“We have national government. We have state government. We have local government. So, there are different rules and regulations that come into play and that can make it difficult to coordinate a consistent response,” Dr. Johnson said.Even if one area has done a good job at controlling the spread of the virus, Dr. Johnson explains a neighboring area may not have followed the same guidelines. As people start to travel, so does the virus, and those eager to believe the virus doesn’t pose a major threat only add to the fire. We’ve seen that in another country that isn’t too far behind the U.S. in its increase in cases.“The biggest similarity with Brazil is that there was an evasion from the federal government in Brazil about the danger of this virus which is put a complacency into the public. The same thing happened to us in January, February and March and is still really occurring in many parts of the United States,” Dr. Adalja said.Dr. Adalja and Dr. Johnson agree there has been a lack of clear and consistent communication in the U.S. Opposite of that, Dr. Johnson says Germany has been successful in keeping its numbers down, due in part to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s communication approach.“She was speaking to the public. She was talking to her health and science advisors and she was sharing the science with the public. And from day one, she was very clear that there were hard times ahead,” Dr. Johnson said.However, it’s not just up to national leaders and policymakers. Dr. Johnson says the population of a country must also have the willingness to look at and rely on science.“While I would say by and large people are doing incredibly well in this country and taking collective action to take care of each other and are eager for scientific information, we’ve also seen these little clusters that are simply plugging their ears and going ‘la la la la la la’,” Dr. Johnson said.Both doctors say what we can do as citizens does make a difference. It’s important to realize many people are making smart decisions for the greater good instead of only thinking about themselves.“Think about what happened in early March and how many people almost overnight went into lockdown, and were taking action to take care of each other,” Dr. Johnson said. 4269

(KGTV) - Students at El Camino High School have a chance to put their stamp on pop culture.They're designing shoes for the Vans Custom Culture competition.El Camino High School is one of just 500 schools in the country to be picked for the contest. More than 200 students submitted designs at the school, but only two will advance to the national competition.Sophomore Isiah Duran is one of the students whose design was chosen."I basically did what I thought was Oceanside," he says. "The pier, sunsets, the beach."The students could make designs based on two categories, "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall.""It resonates with the younger culture," says El Camino Art Teacher Diego De La Luz. "It resonates with activities that range from biking to skateboarding and really just the Southern California vibe which Oceanside is all about."The winner will receive ,000 for their school's art department. Vans will also endow a scholarship for a student from the winning school to attend the Laguna Art Institute.De La Luz says the students will decide how to spend the money at the school if they win. (KGTV) -- A woman was killed Monday after police said she was run over by heavy machinery at an Oceanside beach.The incident was reported shortly after 10 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Pacific, Street, near Oceanside’s South Harbor, according to an Oceanside Police Department spokesperson.The spokesperson said the woman, who was not identified, was asleep on the beach when the equipment hit her. No other people were struck.Police told ABC 10News the heavy machinery was at the beach as part of a dredging project at the harbor. 559

On Tuesday evening, researchers tracing an Orca whale that has been carrying her dead calf on her nose saw the whale still doing so.It isn't unusual for Orcas to carry their babies who die for about a day. This is the first time scientists studying the behavior have seen one do it for this long.The activity is stressful for the 20-year-old whale mother named Tahlequah. EcoWatch reports the baby's carcass sinks, and the mother has to retrieve it and push it along with her nose in sometimes choppy waters.Tahlequah was spotted Tuesday evening in waters near British Columbia's Southern Gulf Islands, the Seattle Times said.According to the Seattle Times, this is the first time in three years an endangered Orca has given birth. 759

On the Walton farm near Iowa City, Iowa, this year’s soybean crop is as good as it gets. But out here, most days are not easy, but Dave Walton finds the good in most days. That optimism could be why the Walton family has been on the farm so long.Walton is a sixth-generation soybean farmer in Iowa."I've got two sons that would like to farm, too,” says Walton.Walton says, perhaps more now than ever, there’s much anxiety about the future."We were already looking at lower profits, and this tariff issue has made it even worse."Of the 900 acres on the Walton's farm, 300 acres are for soybeans."We sell most of our soybeans to a river terminal," says Walton.The soybeans are then loaded onto a barge on the Mississippi, shipped down river and eventually arrive in China, where a growing middle class has an insatiable appetite for all things soy. "They use it mainly for animal feed, and also, they crush the oil out of it and use it for cooking," says Walton.Soybeans are by far the number one food and beverage export of the United States, bringing in billion a year.So, when the White House announced 25 percent tariffs on some Chinese imports, China struck back, placing a 25 percent tariff on U.S. grown soybeans in retaliation."Using soybeans as a negotiating tool is something the Chinese understood,” says Walton. “They knew that that's one of our largest exports, so it made sense for them to target soybeans."As a result of that, and other instabilities in the market, the price of soybeans has tumbled.“It's not fun to be a pawn in this," expresses Walton.It's not just exports like soybeans feeling the pain of the tariffs.
