SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sixteen Marines were arrested Thursday morning for their alleged involvement in various illegal activities ranging from human smuggling to drug-related offenses, according to U.S. Marine Corps officials.The unidentified Marines did not serve in support of the Southwest Border Support mission, USMC officials said."Information gained from a previous human smuggling investigation precipitated the arrests," said Maj. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students are furious about a new dress code rule for girls at one of San Diego’s most prestigious private high schools. Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley announced Friday girls would no longer be allowed to wear skirts. That led to a backlash among students, who signed a petition to reverse the change. “I think that the ban is very sexist,” said student Lana Owad. In a letter sent to parents and students, CCHS said the dress code exists to foster a faith-based environment where students are focused on learning and not outward appearances. CCHS has issued thousands of hours of detention related to the lengths of girls’ skirts. The school dress code posted online indicates girls were allowed to wear skirts or skorts that were not excessively tight or form fitting and were no shorter than 3 inches from the top of the kneecap while standing upright.“We’ve had them tailored in the past because of the restriction on it. We spent money on buying different skirts because they ban other styles for us to wear,” said student Riley Staal. Mimi Cleary said the change was prompted by adults, not students. “No one wants the skirts going, like, literally, no one wants the skirts gone. I think only the principal and teachers want the skirts gone,” said Cleary. Under the new dress code, girls can wear pants, Bermuda shorts, or capri pants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s Planning Commission met Thursday to discuss potential new rules that would help regulate the short-term rental industry in the city.A plan proposed by City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell was first introduced in July after a compromise was reached among members of the hospitality industry and short-term rental companies.The plan would implement tighter restrictions such as capping the number of short-term rental permits that are granted. There are also plans to require a two-night minimum stay to avoid one-night stays that are often connected to big parties that concerns residents.A representative for Campbell says implementing tighter regulations will help law enforcement address any problems that may arise.The proposed plan creates penalties and fines for those who violate the city’s “good neighbor” policy.More than 500 people signed up to voice their opinion about this proposal during Thursday’s virtual meeting.One caller said, “We depend on this for our livelihood, especially since the pandemic has taken a toll on us already. Without having the ability to host, many of us will be forced to leave our homes.”Another caller added, “This has been an issue for years. It’s now time to act and bring it to a close.”The next step will be to send the proposal to the full City Council for review. 1350
