Some of the COVID-19 vaccine candidates call for more than one shot, so how do we make sure patients come back?Three experts all tell us preparing people for the side effects will be critical.A nursing researcher described those side effects in a JAMA article. She suspects she had the experimental vaccine as part of Pfizer’s Phase III clinical trials. After the second shot, she said she was light-headed, nauseous, had a headache, ran a fever, and was hardly able to lift her arm from muscle aches. She wasn't warned and it scared her into thinking she might have COVID-19.“The immune system is revving up,” said LJ Tan, Chief Strategy Officer at the Immunization Action Coalition. “It's responding to that vaccine, and I think we need to tell our patients that so that they expect that. Otherwise, they're going to say, ‘wow that thing hurt, I'm not coming back for that second dose.’”For comparison, a recent shingles vaccine also requires more than one dose and can be painful. Providers and advocates lead education efforts on what to expect. The return rate after the first shot for shingles is about 80%, which is considered high. One suggestion is to put information on side effects in COVID-19 vaccine distribution kits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has already said it plans to include index cards that tell patients what they had and when their next dose is due. That's on top of electronic reminders like email or texts. The federal government has also promised to cover most costs for the vaccine. One doctor says he'd take that a step further.“I feel extremely strongly that we should do everything we can in terms of customized, personalized patient support programs, and even recommend that the federal government go beyond free and provide small rewards or incentives for people who complete the two-dose program,” said Dr. A. Mark Fendrick, Director of the University of Michigan's Center for Value-Based Insurance Design. There's some protection for people who only get one dose of the Pfizer vaccine, but nearly full protection is better. The second dose also boosts antibodies.“That's important because of waning immunity. The higher your antibodies when you start, the longer it takes for that to decrease over time, and potentially make you more susceptible,” said Dr. Gregory Poland, Director of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. That means the best thing is to get both doses as was tested in the study. 2463

Special counsel Robert Mueller's office dropped more potentially damning details -- from an allegation of "additional criminal conduct" to personal financial troubles -- in a response to Paul Manafort's request to change his bail proposal on Friday. The newly discovered alleged criminal conduct "includes a series of bank frauds and bank fraud conspiracies," a filing from the special counsel's office said on Friday night.Read the entire court filing in the window below. No new charges have been filed in open court against Manafort since he pleaded not guilty to nine counts of money laundering and making false statements about his business on October 30. But CNN has reported that additional indictments against the former Trump campaign chairman are being prepared. In their filing Friday, prosecutors allege Manafort received a million mortgage on a house of his in Fairfax, Virginia, by giving the Federal Savings Bank doctored business statements that overstated his wealth. The special counsel's office said it could show the court evidence of this bank fraud "and other bank frauds and conspiracies" at its next hearing, which has not yet been set.Manafort proposed the house in Fairfax as one of four properties that could secure his bail. Another is an apartment he owns in Trump Tower in New York, which is at risk of foreclosure, the prosecutors said. The prosecutors also noted that Manafort has "questioned his ability to maintain the payments on all his mortgages" and that members of his family aren't "willing to assume the risk" of helping him.Manafort earned a judge's approval to be released from house arrest two months ago, if he showed proper documentation and could secure a million bail with assets and properties. He has not been able to clear the judge's hurdles, and proposed a different approach to securing his bail Friday afternoon.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A concert at the Belly Up Tavern this Saturday will raise money for a program dedicated to kids with special needs.Banding Together will hold their 7th annual fundraiser from 12-4 pm on February 24th. The concert features three local bands, and one special, surprise guest artist. The bands are Dr. Seahorse, the Grinnell Trio and Jungle Poppins. But the real stars will be the kids and young adults from the program, some of whom will perform with the bands on stage."It's thrilling for them," says Banding Together Co-Founder and Director Angela Meier. "They hear that people like the Rolling Stones have performed a show there and now they get to as well!"The program uses music therapy to help people with special needs come out of their shell. Meier says it's inspiring and amazing to see how they progress."I've had students who have difficulty putting sentences together," says Meier. "And using rhythm and music, all of the sudden they're able to sing whole sentences."In addition to individual and small group classes, Banding Together runs 42 "Jam Sessions" throughout the year, where the students and musicians join together to make music."It's not just that it's making them feel good, but it's giving them self-esteem," says Meier. "It gives them social skills and prepares them to go out into the community and give back."The concert is open to the public and will also feature live auctions, silent auctions and other fundraisers. All the money goes to fund scholarships and to pay for the jam sessions. Over the previous six years, this event has helped the group give out 134 scholarships totaling ,000.Tickets are and are available at the door, or here. 1714
