It's hard to know what salaries will look like next year.Staffing firm Robert Half surveyed senior managers and found 72% of companies have maintained the same salary or slightly increased pay for new hires since the COVID-19 pandemic began.More than a third are more likely to negotiate compensation with candidates now versus a year ago.“That’s telling me that these positions that have been hard to fill, there is so many information technology security positions available, they're looking for data analysts data scientists,” said Paul McDonald, Senior Executive Director at Robert Half.Workers can also broaden their search outside their geographic area. More companies are willing to hire full-time remote workers.“It’s one thing to talk broadly about what the compensation desires are for you and your family or you,” said McDonald. “The other side is don’t go too far in that first conversation. The negotiation happens after you have an offer.”If the company won’t budge on pay, they may offer other benefits, like help paying for home internet, more paid time off, and opportunities to upskill.Robert Half says roles in IT security with the least amount of experience make just under 0,000 a year on average. The salary range can be adjusted by geography, along with advanced degrees and certifications. There are salaries for some 470 positions listed on RobertHalf.com. 1390

It’s official, summer 2020 was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their monthly report on global temperatures. August 2020’s temperatures around the world made it the second-warmest August on record behind 2016, and the third-hottest season. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, August set a new record with a temperature departure from average of 2.14 degrees F, beating 2016’s numbers.“The most notable temperature departures from average were observed across Alaska, eastern Canada, the western contiguous U.S., Europe, northern Russia, central South America, Western Australia, eastern Antarctica, and across the North Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Barents Sea, where temperatures were at least 2.0°C (3.6°F) above average,” NOAA scientists observed. The three-month season, June-August, surpassed the previous global record reached in both 2016 and 2019. This period is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and they also had warmer weather than normal. Australia also had a drier than usual winter, 31 percent below average for precipitation.Globally, the ten hottest Augusts have all happened since 1998, and the five warmest have happened since 2015.Scientists believe 2020 will very likely rank in the top five warmest years on record. Also noted in the report, arctic sea ice continues to decline. The average Arctic sea ice coverage in August was the third smallest on record, about 29 percent below the 1981-2010 average. 1509

INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) -- Police say two women climbed in the drive-thru window at an Indianapolis McDonald's and assaulted an employee because they didn't get their chicken McNuggets. Police were called to the restaurant just after 3 a.m. local time Friday morning. The manager told police he was working the drive-thru window when two women pulled up complaining they did not receive their chicken McNuggets. When the manager told the women they didn't order McNuggets or pay for them, even printing out a receipt to show them, the pair tried to order some at the window. The manager told the women they would have to drive back around and order at the signboard and said, "Have a nice day," before turning his back on them to fill other customer orders, according to police. The women then began pounding on the window and honking their car horn, claiming they had been disrespected. They then climbed in the drive-thru window, knocking over a basin full of tea and a tablet register before assaulting the manager. The women then climbed back out the drive-thru window and sped away.Police say they did not get any chicken McNuggets. No arrests have been made. You can watch Part 1 of the incident in the player above taken by Monique Hernandez-McNeely, who was waiting in the drive-thru line behind them. NOTE: Part 2, below, contains graphic language. 1430

It's that time of year again, not only for gift-getting but also for gift-giving. And this year, some holiday tipping protocol is changing due to the pandemic. An appropriate holiday tip amount will vary based on who is receiving the tip and also how much you can afford to give, and this year that might have changed for many compared to last.Co-president of The Emily Post Institute and etiquette expert, Lizzie Post, suggests considering the following:"Who’s on your list, who is really important to you, what is your budget, and how can you use your words if you can’t do a gift or tip," she said. For many of us, delivery drivers or people who work curbside pick-up at grocery stores likely played a bigger role in 2020 than ever before. If you're looking for a way to say thank you, consider a contact-less gift in the range."I’ve heard of people handing over a few bucks or sometimes even taping it in the trunk, then you pop the trunk and the money’s there," said Industry Analyst at Creditcards.com Ted Rossman, who's gathered data on holiday tipping trends and practices.Especially now, metro Detroit servers like Patrick Foody say an extra gesture really goes a long way. He works at Basement Burger Bar in Detroit, which doesn't have outdoor dining and due to an epidemic health order from MDHHS, cannot offer dine-in service until Dec. 20.Foody says he often doesn't get any tip at all when working take-out, and after tipping out cooks and dishwashers, he sometimes loses money on orders.“We take care of you all year long. Around the holidays especially this year when we’re not working dine-in, just to throw a little bit more care our way if you can," he said. You can also buy gift cards to restaurants in lieu of giving extra cash tips for the holiday; some venues like Basement Burger Car offer discounts or deals. At Basement Burger Bar, every in gift cards you spend gives you bonus bucks to spend at the restaurant, Foody says.“There are some industries, some places where they cannot accept gifts or cash, Post said. Like certain long-term care facilities or mail carriers. USPS workers cannot accept cash or gifts more than a value. In cases like that, Post suggests snacks, refreshments, or baked goods with a handwritten note. It's important to make sure there's enough to be shared with co-workers or other members of an office or branch; always leave a note and a visible list of ingredients, Post advises. And this year due to the pandemic, pre-packaged or individually wrapped items are best.“A minority of people are tipping their trash or recycling collectors, only about 40 percent of people typically do that," Rossman said.Cash tips for garbage or recycling collectors should generally be in the - range according to The Emily Post InstituteFor personal service providers like stylists, barbers, personal trainers, dog walkers, and the like, a holiday tip should be the value of one session or serviceFor regular babysitters, an appropriate holiday bonus would be equivalent to one day or night's payLive-in care providers or house cleaners should be given one week's pay as a sign of holiday appreciationPost said for those who cannot afford to give a monetary thanks this holiday season, handwritten notes that explain the difficult circumstances and offer appreciation for service go a long way.Click here for more holiday tipping protocols to remember this year. This story originally reported by Jenn Schanz on WXYZ.com. 3485

In the race towards a COVID-19 vaccine, there have been a lot of hurdles. In the spring months, it was learning about a novel virus: how it spreads and affects the body. Then, it was developing a vaccine that was not only effective but safe. Now that Pfizer and Moderna have both announced vaccines with nearly 95-percent efficacy, the challenge is not developing one, but rather getting people to actually get the vaccines.“Maybe 10-15 percent of people are just never going to go get a vaccine because they feel strongly against it,” said Katy Milkman, a professor at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.Earlier in the summer, 72 percent of Americans said they would take a COVID-19 vaccine, according to a study by the Pew Research Center. But in the months that have followed, that number has steadily declined. Now, according to a recent Gallup poll conducted in early November, 42 percent of Americans said they would not get an FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine. 1001
