SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the rapid growth of plant-based meats across the country, businesses in San Diego have been expanding to meet demand.Plant Power, a San Diego-based vegan fast-food chain, announced it would be expanding to four new locations in Southern California in the next 16 months.Founded in 2016, Plant Power currently has locations in Ocean Beach, Encinitas, Redlands, SDSU and Long Beach. The new sites will be in Riverside, Orange County, the Inland Empire and another in San Diego, bringing it to a total of nine locations.Last month, they also debuted a new food truck in Los Angeles.“Consumers are enthusiastic about embracing a healthier, more sustainable take on traditional fast food,” said Mitch Wallis, President and Co-CEO of Plant Power Fast Food.“Fast food doesn’t have to be unhealthy for our bodies or bad for the planet. We’re here to demonstrate that there’s a better way,” he added.The plant-based craze hasn’t been contained just to vegan eateries. Supermarkets and other restaurants have begun offering meat substitutes, creating a fast-growing market for plant-based patties.Two companies have emerged as market leaders, Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods. But a San Diego company has also been positioning itself for success.Before the Butcher recently announced it has started selling its products nation-wide at stores like Ralphs and Lucky’s.Before the Butcher offers a line of plant-based meats called UNCUT. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With San Diego Comic-Con fans missing the convention in-person this year, some have instead left a tribute across the street from the convention center.Fans of the pop culture event recently began leaving flowers, t-shirts, and notes of their memories from past Comic-Cons outside TinFish — a popular site for people watching and off-site SDCC experiences every year.Chris Morrow, one of the organizers of the shrine, says the tribute was organized as a way for fans to continue connecting over their shared love of the convention.RELATED: San Diego Comic-Con 2020: What to know about SDCC@Home"Residents from San Diego County got together to show love and respect to Comic-Con. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A splash of color brings life back to Bay Park Elementary. Over the weekend, parents and volunteers joined together to give the school a facelift. The beautification project now has kids excited to come to school. “They were just blown away,” says Emily Auer. “Their face just lit up. They actually touched the walls.”Bay Park Elementary is approaching it’s the 80th anniversary. The school’s beautification team brought together almost 80 volunteers. The project started Friday night until late Sunday afternoon. Volunteers painted the walls and wooden backpack holders. Parents tell 10News one family donated a bunch of small desks with chairs that now sit in the halls. Behr gave the paint for the project. “Such a wonderful group of kids, so positive,” says parent Erica Krystek. “We really wanted that positivity reflected in the hallways.”The Bay Park Elementary Beautification Team plans to do more upgrades in the future. They hope to paint and add new carpet to the school’s auditorium. 1022

San Diego (KGTV)- A new affordable housing building with studio- style apartments will be coming soon to East Village. The building will be used to house the homeless. City leaders and developers broke ground on the project this morning. “Every time we get the chance to break ground on another supportive housing opportunity means that we’re going to be able to help dozens of San Diegans who need that supportive services and housing,” says Council Member Chris Ward. The building will have over 70 units for people who have experienced homelessness. There will be at least a dozen more units for those who earn 50% or less of the median average income in San Diego. The 7-story building, which includes parking, will have a glass-encased lobby, community room, laundry facilities, and counseling offices. The project aligns with the mayor’s budget proposal. In the plan, .2 million will be used for homeless programs. City leaders say combating this issue is a priority and San Diegans could see more housing, like The Link building, in the future. “If we can do this one project at a time, we can actually get to the number of units that we need in 2 years to house all of the unsheltered, chronic homeless that we see every day,” says Ward.Developers hope to have the project done by early 2021. 1312

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — University of San Diego officials say they are investigating white supremacy social media accounts that claim to have ties to the university.In a joint statement from several USD leadership, the school says in the last 24 hours it has been made aware of Instagram accounts that claim to have ties to the school and are used to "post white supremacy propaganda."USD said it is investigating the source of the social media accounts and are making formal requests to Instagram to remove them, with some already taken down.The school slammed the accounts as "abhorrent and hateful" and condemned the posts.
