SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An annual toy giveaway for San Diego military families looked different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the reason for the event remains the same.For this year’s Operation Holiday Joy, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA chose hundreds of local military families who needed a little extra help this holiday season.On Wednesday, at the Murphy Canyon Chapel on Santo Road, the YMCA handed out boxes of gift-wrapped toys, and even bicycles, to more than 1,000 kids.Families were given books, a mini Christmas tree, and a gift card.Tim Ney, executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, said that now more than ever it’s important to support military families, as they too must deal with the additional challenges brought on by the pandemic.“Spouse employment is 30 percent, it’s really high. The online education and we’re doing the Achievement Academy where we’re taking the kids during the day. And doing the online learning, then we do STEM activities with them afterwards,” said Ney.It’s a little bit of extra help these military families are extremely thankful for.Emily, who is a military wife, told ABC 10News, “We’re so grateful and we’re thankful and blessed that everyone is so generous to give military families support, especially during this pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman was left bleeding and bruised after she was forced to jump off an electric scooter. She had to think quickly when she realized the brakes were cut Tuesday night in Pacific Beach. "My option was either to jump off the scooter or to just roll with it into traffic," said Mary Adamcyk. Adamcyk says she rides electric scooters all the time. Tuesday night, it didn't end well. "I was really freaked out because there were two cars coming towards me."So, she decided to jump. "I just kind of went flying, I mean, I jumped off, I fell to my knees, my cell phone went flying," said Adamcyk. "I had holes just torn into both of my knees, they got cut up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A student at Nazareth School San Diego in Mission Valley is in the hospital with meningococcal disease, county health officials said Friday. The County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) said it is reaching out to anyone who came in close contact with the child at the K-8 school. Antibiotics are not being recommended for those who are not at risk. “While meningococcal disease can be serious and deadly, it is not spread through casual contact. Therefore, the risk to those who were not in close, direct contact is minimal,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “We want to make sure students are up to date on immunizations and are asking people in the school community to look for the signs and symptoms of the disease.” Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacteria and spread through close contact including sharing drinking glasses, eating utensils, and smoking or vaping equipment. The bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illness. Symptoms include fever, headache, sensitivity to light and noise, a stiff neck, and a rash. Anyone who develops the symptoms should get medical help, health officials said. 1193
