When members enter the Schlessman Family YMCA, they’re greeted with new safety measures including getting their temperature taken at the front door.“We’re just ensuring that members, guests and staff are below a 100.4 fever,” said Vanessa Pritchett, sales director with the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver. She says most of the 24,000 YMCA locations across the country were shut down for nearly three months due to the pandemic. Now, with many YMCAs reopening, staff are taking extra steps to ensure member safety like using protective plexiglass at the entrance and having more hand sanitizer stations in more locations.“We really missed our members and we are so much more than a gym,” Pritchett said. “We are focusing on the mind, body and spirit of everyone in our community.”Additional safety measures include mobile check-ins, closing twice a day for deep cleaning, and restructuring the layout of workout equipment to promote social distancing. You don’t have to wear a mask while you’re working out at the YMCA but in between sets or if you switch to a new station, staff is asking members to cover up.To help keep the facilities as clean as possible, the YMCA is encouraging members to clean equipment before and after using it.“You are checking in via touchless system,” said Meredith Marshall, one the nearly 10 million YMCA members in America. She’s been coming to the YMCA since she was eight years old and says these new changes give her peace of mind while working out her body.“It lets me know that the YMCA has thought through what we are doing here,” Marshall said. “How we are to interact with one another.”Interacting and reconnecting with the YMCA community as they move to reopen safely and responsibly. 1725

When a young sperm whale washed up on a beach in southern Spain, scientists wanted to know what killed it. They now know: waste -- 64 pounds of it. Most of it plastic, but also ropes, pieces of net and other debris lodged in its stomach. The discovery has prompted authorities in Murcia, Spain, to launch a campaign to clean up its beaches."The presence of plastic in the ocean and oceans is one of the greatest threats to the conservation of wildlife throughout the world, as many animals are trapped in the trash or ingest large quantities of plastics that end up causing their death," Murcia's general director of environment, Consuelo Rosauro said in a statement.A sperm whale's diet is usually comprised of giant squid. But the 33-foot long mammal that washed up on the beach of Cabo de Palos on February 27 was unusually thin. 839
WILBRAHAM, Mass. (AP) — Friendly’s Restaurants, an East Coast dining chain known for its Fribble milkshake and ice cream sundaes, is filing for bankruptcy protection. All 130 of its locations will remain open while it restructures under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.Substantially all of its assets are being sold to the restaurant company, Amici Partners Group.“Over the last two years, Friendly’s has made important strides toward reinvigorating our beloved brand in the face of shifting demographics, increased competition, and rising costs,” said George Michel, the company's CEO. “We achieved this by delivering menu innovation, re-energizing marketing, focusing on take-out, catering and third-party delivery, establishing a better overall experience for customers, and working closely with our franchisees and restaurant teams. Unfortunately, like many restaurant businesses, our progress was suddenly interrupted by the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, which caused a decline in revenue as dine-in operations ceased for months and re-opened with limited capacity."The pandemic has hit the restaurant sector hard, particularly those that rely on people in their dining rooms. At least 10 chains have filed for bankruptcy protection since the pandemic began this year. But Friendly’s Restaurant, like most other chains that have stumbled this year, had been struggling. The Wilbraham, Massachusetts, company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011 as well. 1470
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters Wednesday that President Donald Trump wants to continue working from the Oval Office despite being infected with COVID-19.According to CNN and CBS, Meadows told reporters that the White House would be taking extra precautions to allow Trump to do so. According to CBS reporter Ben Tracy, any White House staff coming in contact with the president will wear gowns, gloves, masks and eye protection. It's unclear if Trump would also wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in the Oval Office.Following Meadows' statement to reporters, Larry Kudlow, the Director of the United States National Economic Council, said during an appearance on CNBC that Trump visited the West Wing with those added precautions on Tuesday.Medical experts say that while PPE greatly reduces the spread of COVID-19, it cannot prevent the spread of the virus entirely. The CDC recommends that anyone who comes within six feet of a person who may have COVID-19 should quarantine for 14 days, excluding those who have had the virus within the last three months.During a press conference on Monday, White House physician Dr. Sean Conley did not specify if Trump would be asked to quarantine in the White House residence while he was infected with COVID-19.This story is breaking and will be updated. 1346
