SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When professors at San Diego City College weren't prepping for fall semester, they were getting in on a little TikTok action thanks to English professor Christy Ball."I watched a lot of TikTok this summer, I fell in love with all the silliness in America and I really needed it when all the bad news was coming and coming," Ball said.She teamed up with 30 of her colleagues "to let students know we understand this isn't the ideal learning environment but that we believe in them, and we are so committed to their success and we're going to work with them the whole way." Together, they created a 2-minute TikTok-inspired clip with messages like "We're in this together," "You're not alone," and "We are listening."The video's editor and SDCC English professor Kevin Gossett said, "Putting something out like this is a good reminder that we're ready for this. We've been doing months and months of training in so many different ways just for this moment to support you."Gossett said it took a few weeks to edit the video but the hardest part was teaching writers how to TikTok."I did zoom recording sessions where I was walking them step-by-step. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego police officers responding to a call for a shoplifter in Ocean Beach ended up buying the suspect clothes and shoes instead of arresting him.It happened on Jan. 6 around 5 a.m. at the location on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. SDPD officers Christian Nimmons and Dominic Collins said employees at the drugstore reported that a homeless man had come in, stolen a sweatshirt and refused to leave.The store declined to press charges but wanted the man out of the store.But knowing it was very cold outside, and seeing the man also didn't have a shirt or socks and shoes, the officers decided to buy them for him."We looked at each other, asked how much the sweatshirt was going to cost, and had the same mutual decision of giving him the sweatshirt," said Collins.Both men told 10News it was simply the right thing to do and part of their job as officers to show compassion for those they come in contact with."I think he was more shocked that cops were doing something for him," Nimmons said. "We couldn't leave him like that. That was really it. It's what we joined to do. To help people."The man, only known to the officers as Daniel, reportedly put on the items and left. 1201

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homeless hospital patients in San Diego are sometimes dumped back on the streets after receiving treatment. Some of them - then turned away from shelters who don't have enough room. California lawmakers are trying to change that.It breaks Kim Peterson's heart to see her friend, Heather, living on this Chula Vista sidewalk."This is a picture of us together," said Peterson. "We've become more like sisters."Heather is constantly in and out of hospitals."She's had multiple strokes," Peterson said. "She needs to use a wheelchair to get around."But, the care stops once the hospitals let her go."She was released back to the street with a bus pass," Peterson told 10News. "It was raining, with no place to go, just a blanket."Another time, Heather was taken to a shelter - but turned away.  "They dropped her off far from where she felt safe," Peterson said. "They took her downtown where there wasn't a bed for her."One hospital told 10News they give patients a list of resources, but the patient has to coordinate them on their own.  Senate Bill 1152 would require hospitals to confirm the shelters have room before they're discharged."What does she need to do?" said Peterson. "I will help her do whatever she needs to do to get housed, to be safe, instead, she's laying on the sidewalk."The current problem leaves the homeless in their most vulnerable state and back on the streets. "It's very discouraging to think that we can't do better than that," Peterson said. Today, Heather got news that a nursing facility has extra room. "She will never get better," Peterson said. "She's gonna be in this permanent state of disability."Heather will be celebrating her 60th birthday next month, with a roof over her head. Many others won't be as lucky. "We can find a solution," said Peterson. "I know we can."   1957
