SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and three others were injured in an early Saturday morning crash involving two cars along the southbound lanes of SR-163 in Balboa Park.The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on the Cabrillo Highway just south of the Quince Street overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver of a Lexus sedan rear-ended a Mazda sedan sending both cars off the highway. One of the vehicles tumbled down an embankment into a drainage ditch.The Madza was carrying two rideshare passengers in the rear seats, according to CHP. One of the passengers was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. The other rear passenger was ejected out of the car causing the victim to suffer major injuries.Drivers of both vehicles are being treated for injuries.Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.All southbound lanes were temporarily shut down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking to buy a new or used car may have to hurry if they want to take advantage of the Coronavirus Pandemic's best deals and discounts.Recent studies from the California New Car Dealers Association show that sales of new cars in San Diego were down by 18.6% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same time of 2019. That's better than the state average of 21% but still worrisome for the industry.President Paul Dyke says his dealership saw sales drop in the 10-15% range at El Cajon Ford. But he says the company did a great job of offering deals to bring people into the lots, such as low-interest financing, long term payment plans, and lower prices."Zero percent is always something that gets people moving," says Dyke. "Now for the first time in Ford's history, doing it at 84 months on quite a few of the models really kept things going."The CNDCA says the Pandemic forced the industry to readjust its outlook for the year. They now predict new car sales to reach about 1.5 million in 2020, down from 2.1 million in 2019. If sales stay slow, it could be the worst year for new car sales since the Great Recession.Meanwhile, used cars are flooding the market as rental companies upgrade their fleet.Hertz recently filed for bankruptcy. The company iSeeCars.com did a study on their prices and found that Hertz was offering sales discounts in May that were 43% greater than the discounts they offered in April."There are still plenty of deals to be had," says Amada Lasik from iSeeCars.com. "That's especially true for cars that have been lingering on lots for a while, so we invite consumers to do as much research as they can."Manheim, a company that does used car auctions across the country, says used cars have been staying on lots for longer than usual. According to their data, almost 64% of used cars sold within 30 days back in February. By March, that number had dropped to 53%. The longer a car stays on the lot, the more likely a dealer will offer it at a lower price.Manheim also found that used car sales were down 34% in April compared to 2019, while wholesale used car prices dropped more than 11%.All that being said, experts believe these numbers will bounce back over the summer as restrictions ease.Dyke says his most significant concern for the industry is inventory. Since factories were closed for several months during the Pandemic, dealerships won't have as many cars to sell in July and August.Dyke says the companies will raise prices and eliminate the deals as demand increases while supply dwindles. 2574

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New numbers show just how quickly housing has become unaffordable in San Diego county.Housing received a thumbs-down because the Housing Affordability Index for San Diego County decreased from 26% in December 2017 to 24% in December 2018. In 2012, more than 45% of county residents could buy a median-priced home.The report on housing affordability was part of the annual Quality of Life Dashboard released by the Equinox Project, The Nonprofit Institute at University of San Diego. The renters' situation isn't much better. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in San Diego County, 57% of people pay more than 30% of their income on rent. San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties have the highest proportion of people paying over 30% of their income on rent.DeBenedict says add it all up, and it hurts locals employers trying attract and keep talent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials have identified the recruit who died after going into cardiac arrest Sunday morning.The Marine Corps Recruit Deport says 21-year-old Private Patrick Armando Vega was pronounced dead just before noon on Sunday.A drill instructor found Vega unresponsive in his bed around midnight Sunday and conducted CPR. Vega during this difficult time,” said Brig. Gen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Protesters are demanding a change to how sex education is taught to students in California. They say a law passed a few years ago and written by local Assemblywoman Dr. Shirley Weber is sexualizing young minds. The group of protesters is with the Alliance to Protect Children. They tell 10News they are for sex ed in school, but the law is teaching students more than what parents are comfortable with. “It feels like its a disrespect to all mothers and children everywhere,” said mother of two Domonique Hinton. Dozens of protesters stood outside Dr. Shirley Weber’s office downtown Friday morning, speaking against Assembly Bill 329 that was written and passed in 2015. The bill makes it mandatory for students 7th through 12th grade to be taught sex education, but it also gives schools the option to offer the age-appropriate curriculum to lower grades. AB 329 states, “‘Comprehensive sexual health education means education regarding human development and sexuality, including education on pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections.”Protesters say graphic details of sexuality should not be taught in schools. “That is not the same as sex ed like we probably had in high school or middle school. That's something different,” says organizer America Figueroa. “Just that word, sexuality, it includes a lot of things in it like the teaching of other ideologies as well as sexual behaviors.”The group says a new bill will be introduced next year that will allow parents to review the curriculum online, so there is complete transparency. 10News reached out to Dr. Weber’s team.
