SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you're trying to find a precious ticket to San Diego Comic-Con this summer, watch out for villainous scammers scalping fake badges. The Better Business Bureau has issued a warning that third-party sellers may sell fake badges."For consecutive years now, Comic-Con International has sold out in record time and obtaining a badge has become strenuous," the BBB writes. "One of the most pervasive scams BBB has found over the years is the reselling scam in which a scammer claims they bought a badge but can no longer attend the convention."MAP: Where to find you favorite Comic-Con exhibitsScammers may offer their fake badge, tricking customers into thinking they can change the name on their badge to theirs. But they can't and Comic-Con doesn't allow legitimate badge holders to do so."A key factor for consumers to remember is Comic-Con provides a refund at the buyer’s request, making it unnecessary to resell a ticket," BBB adds. The BBB says another common scam with SDCC badges is scammers sell "extra tickets." Comic-Con badgeholders are limited to one ticket each, so third-party sellers can't have extra badges to sell. RELATED: San Diego Comic-Con 2019 road closures, detours, shuttle routes announcedMost importantly, SDCC badges are non-transferable. Those who purchase badges using their SDCC Member ID account agree not to sell, trade, transfer, or share badge information."...If San Diego Comic-Con determines you have violated this policy, they have the right to cancel your badge without a refund. Thus, buying from a third-party seller is not only more expensive it may put the attendees at risk of being expelled from the event," the BBB says. While Comic-Con 2019 badges are sold out, numerous off-site events packing just as much fun will be held around the San Diego Convention Center and throughout downtown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In light of the governor's directive on limiting large gatherings out of coronavirus concerns, the San Diego Half Marathon announced on Thursday that this Sunday's event will be "virtual" only. While many runners support the decision to cancel the San Diego Half Marathon, they're upset that it doesn't appear there will be any refunds.Organizers sent 10News a statement that reads in part, "By their very nature, the cost of events like ours are front loaded and [non-recoupable], which is why we do not have a refund or deferral policy. This policy is clearly stated in our registration process and is agreed to by runners when they sign up for the event."RELATED: What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirusMajor changes are also happening to other local events. This weekend’s 5K Leprechaun run in Pacific Beach is canceled. The upcoming Pearl Jam concert at Viejas Arena is now postponed. WonderCon Anaheim is also being postponed.Fears continue to loom over July’s Comic-Com convention but organizers report that it’s still scheduled to take place. “Rip” Rippetoe is the President of the San Diego Convention Center. He tells 10News, “I think it's too soon to speculate on any events that would happen in May, June or July.”“Events of a certain size have been canceled and we're seeing that's to prevent the spread of illness,” says Skylar Crowley with the Better Business Bureau in San Diego. She says consumers need to be reading the fine print on all tickets sale transactions, adding, “If there are cancellations and the tickets were purchased through an original seller- an official site- they should automatically issue a refund to that consumer.”RELATED: Disneyland, California Adventure to close through March due to coronavirusHowever, Crowley says that if the event is postponed and the consumer can't go, he or she might have to submit a formal request through the purchasing platform. A spokesperson for StubHub writes to 10News, "Our policy is to provide a full refund with fees if an event is canceled. In addition, given the current environment, if an event is canceled, customers can opt to receive a StubHub coupon valued at 120 percent of the original purchase." “We do advise that consumers ensure that they are submitting payment with a credit card so in the event that something is indisputable, they can take that to the credit card company and see about getting a refund that way,” adds Crowley.RELATED: San Diego County announces five new coronavirus cases, bans large gatheringsShe says that if consumers are struggling to get access to any refunds that they’re entitled to, they can file a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau or the Federal Trade Commission. 2763

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Just days into California's new stay-at-home order, many businesses say this time around they won’t comply with restrictions. Some restaurant owners tell ABC 10News they’re not doing it out of defiance, but as a way to survive.“We have to stand up for ourselves. We have to open or else we lose the risk of losing our business entirely,” said Annie Rammel, the owner of Oak + Elixir restaurant in Carlsbad.Rammel said she spent ,000 to have a deck built outside of Oak + Elixir on State Street to provide a safe dining option for patrons. It was going well until she had to shut things down once again this week as COVID-19 cases surged and the state put restrictions on in-person dining were put back in place.“Closed, open, closed, open,” she said. “A lot of us are not doing well; we’re not doing well, the take out and to-go we’re losing money on that.”Rammel and a group of small business owners in Carlsbad and Oceanside decided to reopen for in-person dining Friday and take their chances, including several restaurants in the Carlsbad Village. She said if she stayed closed, her 15 employees would be laid off during an already rough year.“It’s for our employees to put food on their tables; some of them have children that they have to provide for, the holidays are coming, and I’m just not going to do that,” she said. Her patio and additional outdoor sidewalk tables were ready for customers on Friday at 4 p.m. Rammel said she expected to seat approximately 100 customers.Just next door at Caldo Pomodoro, customers were seated outside for lunch Friday.“We’re basically fighting for our lives, and we’ve been here for 29 years, it’s a family-owned and operated restaurant, it’s not that we’re doing anything wrong, we just want to survive,” said Justin Davis, who works as a server at the restaurant. “If we shut down, we’re pretty much not going to open again. We did the plexiglass, redid our tables, and invested so much money into it, and we don’t see any reason why we should shut down again.”A Carlsbad Police spokesperson said officers respond to reports of businesses operating outside of the health orders, but the goal is to gain compliance through education. However, they said willful violations witnessed by officers will be reported to the county for documentation.“We’re scared to lose our ABC license, which is our liquor license,” said Rammel. “If that happens, the group of us is saying we’re going to push through, we have some attorneys on our side, and they say we have a really good fight because there is no evidence that these spikes are coming from us.” 2614
