SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Christmas morning, more than 700 families drove through a toy and food distribution at the Jacobs Center on Euclid Avenue in San Diego. Families were given boxes of food from the San Diego Food Bank, plus every child was able to get out of their car to receive at least three wrapped gifts. There were also free gift cards available.“My little one smiled. He was so happy,” said Elsa Sarabia, a mom of five who drove through.Sarabia said she works as a chef, and both she and her husband have lost hours at work this year. This event meant more gifts for her children that she might not have otherwise been able to afford.“We don’t have a lot of money to buy stuff for the kids and we appreciate everything you do for us,” she said, thanking the organizers.This is the fourth time this event was held. It’s hosted by Shane Harris and the People’s Alliance for Justice, with support from Supervisor Kristin Gaspar and the San Diego Lifeguards.The event had to adapt this year to be safe due to coronavirus, but Harris said they knew they had to make those changes to continue to fill this need. The breakfast would usually take place in a big hall, but organizers designed a drive-through format for 2020.“Really just trying to make sure the needs of the community are met particularly at a time where COVID-19 has made it really difficult for a lot of families economically,” said Harris.One volunteer was dancing through the whole morning as she distributed food, saying she was glad to give up her Christmas morning if it meant helping those in her community who needed it this year."A lot of these people do appear to be in great need. COVID has hit people that I’m sure never expected to be in this position," said volunteer Sharon Klatt, taking a pause from yelling 'Merry Christmas!' to everyone driving through. 1853

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers are finding a place to stay through the Safe Harbors Network, an organization which got its start at the Christ United Methodist Church in Normal Heights. Pastor Bill Jenkins began giving shelter to Haitian refugees back in 2009. And for quite a while the church was the only immigrant welcoming shelter in southern California. Eventually, the Safe Harbors Network was created. It's a growing collection of churches, organizations, and individuals that house refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers. Pastor Jenkins says he's seen an explosion of interest from people wanting to help in recent months after Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy went into effect. Safe Harbors works in cooperation with ICE to give shelter to people awaiting their day in court.   886

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diegans have a new opportunity to go back to school without fear of being saddled with student loan debt.The San Diego Workforce Partnership and U.C. San Diego Extension are teaming up to create what's called an income share agreement. Here's how it works:People complete a roughly yearlong certificate program in digital marketing, business intelligence, front-end web design or java programming at UCSD Extension. The fund will front the student's entire tuition, plus support services to total about ,500. Grads only make payments on it if they have a job that pays at least ,000 a year. "Once you get a foothold in some of these jobs, your salary potential grows even faster," said Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership. Grads would be billed 6 to 8 percent of their pre-tax salary per month, but they'd never pay more than ,500. Plus, all payments top after three to five years. The idea is that the most successful grads can fund the next generation of those looking to retrain.Google.org, Strada Education Network and the James Irvine Foundation are backing the program, along with an anonymous donor. SAN DIEGO, California — Dozens of voters were left off the roster at a San Diego County polling place on Election Day, leading to frustration and delays.The problem was reported Tuesday morning at Pacific Trails Middle School at 5975 Village Center Loop Road in Carmel Valley.Poll workers received an incomplete roster which omitted 46 names, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu confirmed. The list was missing two and a half pages.Voters waited for voting officials to reprint another roster and deliver it to the polling place.Officials tried to ease the long line by calling the Registrar of Voters and getting approval for each person over the phone, a voter told KGTV television station.Voters also had the option of voting provisionally, but many of them declined, telling KGTV they wanted their votes to count. Provisional voting requires extra processing time to verify residences and identities.The San Diego Superior Court announced Monday it would have a judicial officer on hand to deal with any possible election-related issues, including registration, denial of registration of voters, certification or denial of certification of candidates or the certification or denial of certification of ballot measures.Voters were encouraged to contact the Registrar of Voters at 858-565-5800 with any concerns. 1337

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - It started as a thesis project and now is a tool for any musician in the world to use. Dr. Chris Warren is an Assistant Professor of Digital Composition and Sound Design at San Diego State University and said “Echo Thief” started about ten years ago and is a project he’s been growing ever since. He’s been traveling around North America and using an acoustic measurement tool to gather and capture sound in different types of acoustic environments. His personal addition to the recording field is creating a way to capture sound in noisy environments. Typically, the reverb of a space can only be captured when it’s silent, like in a church. However, he has created a way do it in a loud area, like capturing the sound of being under a bridge even if there are cars driving by. He’s been using the library and plug-in with his audio production students. Then Kayla Gautereaux, a former SDSU student who is now on the faculty at the New England Conservatory, came to him and asked the audio pro if there would be a way for musicians to use his tool for their practice. Warren then created an easy-to-use website for anyone to play music or sing, and have it sound like they’re in a variety of locations. “We were able to take the sounds from around North America, a bunch of fascinating acoustic spaces, and make reverberators out them so people can virtually perform in these spaces,” he said. Gautereaux said she can now sit in her living room and sing, but it sounds like she’s somewhere else. “It feels like you’re there not just because the app has a picture there, but because you can hear the response of your voice or whatever instrument you play into that space,” she said. She also added that the space a musician performs inside is just as important as an instrument or vocals, so this is a welcome addition to the music world. 1873
