SUZHOU, Jiangsu, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Scholars and officials stressed the importance of protecting cultural heritage at the World Expo's second theme forum which opened in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province on Saturday.Culture remains the soul of a city and urban residents not only need to ensure that traffic moves smoothly, infrastructure projects are completed and their economic futures are secure, but they must also protect their cities' diversified cultures, noted Minister of Culture Cai Wu.The country's urbanization has improved people's lives, but also resulted in problems such as a disappearing cultural heritage and the sometimes monotonous appearance of cities, Cai said."If it goes on like that, it will certainly impede the growth of a city or a country and reduce the quality of people's lives," Cai warned.Further, globalization was causing more pressure to protect the nation's cultural heritage, said Sha Zukang, head of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.Cultural heritage protection should focus on providing a diversified culture rather than a monotonous culture, Sha said. With the theme focusing on cultural heritage and urban regeneration, the two-day forum was co-organized by the Ministry of Culture, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Executive Committee of Expo 2010 Shanghai China, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the government of Suzhou. The forum has attracted nearly 800 participants from some 20 countries and regions, as well as international organizations.Participants to the forum include Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Hans d' Orville and the French architect and designer of China's National Center for the Performing Arts, Paul Andreu.A total of 189 countries have sponsored pavilions at the six-month Shanghai World Expo, whose theme is "Better City, Better Life".

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The State Council's policies to rein in rapidly soaring housing prices in cities will continue and local governments should implement them "unswervingly", according to a statement released Monday from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, while also denying some media reports on a possible policy withdrawal."We will urge local governments to make sure that they strictly implement the differentiated housing loans policy to crack down on housing speculations," the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website. The ministry added it would adopt "positive" measures to increase the supply of commercial homes in the market, speed up construction of housing for low-income residents and renovation of shantytowns, and strengthen supervision of the real estate market conditions. The statement came shortly after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released its latest figures on housing prices in Chinese cities.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 11.4 percent year on year in June, one percentage point lower than the increase in May, according to NBS statistics. This was the second consecutive month that China's property prices grew at a slower pace. Property prices in the 70 large- and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent year on year in May, 0.4 percentage point lower than in April. The State Council, China's Cabinet, introduced a series of tightening measures in April to rein in soaring house prices and curb speculation, including tightened scrutiny of developers' financing, suspension of loans for third-home purchases and higher down-payment requirements for second-home purchases.Housing prices almost doubled in some popular Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai in 2009, prompting the Chinese government to take measures to curb these excessive hikes.

BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's flood control authority Saturday urged more efforts to battle flooding in areas along the Yalu River in northeast China's Liaoning Province, to ensure the safety of local residents. The Office of National State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has required relevant departments to focus on the prevention of landslides. The office dispatched a work team to Liaoning Saturday to assist flood-control efforts. As of 7 a.m. Saturday, three people were missing and about 51,000 people had been evacuated, after the swollen Yalu River flooded parts of Dandong City in Liaoning.

HANGZHOU, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people are dead and two others still buried Friday after a rain-triggered landslide in east China's Zhejiang Province. The landslide hit Taolin Village of Chun'an County at 5:00 a.m. Friday as villagers were being evacuated from their homes. The area had been pounded by rain since Thursday afternoon, said Tong Xiaowei, deputy county head.Debris swamped two residential houses, burying six residents and two others assisting with the evacuation, Tong said.Three of the eight people were injured and were receiving treatment at hospital, Tong said.About 300 fire fighters, policemen, medical personnel and villagers had joined in the rescue work, he said.Provincial meteorological authorities forecast Thursday that heavy rain would persist for another week. Chun'an County was among the worst hit by the rain. Also Friday, rescuers from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region recovered the bodies of three people from rubble after a rainstorm damaged two homes in Dongma Village of Rongshui Miao Autonomous County around 3 a.m., according to the county's flood control and drought relief headquarters. In the far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, an exploration worker was suffocated to death Thursday after he was buried by a rain-triggered landslide on a hill in Qira County, said a spokesman with the county government Friday. At around 2:40 p.m. Thursday the landslide of mud-and-stone hit a tent where five exploration workers with the Xinjiang Xindi Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. were taking a rest, said the spokesman.Four workers managed to escape while one was found dead after being dug out half an hour later, he said. The civil affairs bureau in northern Hebei Province said Friday a thunderstorm with sporadic hail hit Zhangjiakou City from Wednesday to Thursday, leaving two dead and three missing. The storm hit six counties in Zhangjiakou, with 56,200 residents suffering losses and hundreds of houses collapsing. The rainstorm damaged roads and bridges, and about 7,000 hectares of farmland have been submerged. The Ministry of Civil Affairs said, by 4 p.m. Friday, the heavy rains that began pounding south China Sunday had left 69 dead, 44 missing and forced the evacuation of 493,000 people in Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Sichuan and Guizhou provinces as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The rainstorms had caused direct economic losses of 6.5 billion yuan (952 million U.S.dollars), it said.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The world's most populous country is expanding its social security net as China's major social insurance program reached a new high for the number of people covered, official figures show. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said on Thursday that the nation's urban pension insurance covered 235.5 million people by the end of 2009, an increase of 16.6 million over the beginning of that same year.In addition, 26.47 million migrant workers were also included, which was 2.31 million more migrants than at the start of 2009.Officials note that pension fund revenues topped 1.15 trillion yuan by the end of last year, up 18 percent year on year. This followed the government raising the monthly pension income for business retirees for the fifth time between 2005 and 2009 to 1,225 yuan (180 U.S. dollars) a person. Also, the country's basic urban medical insurance covered 401 million people in 2009, of which 219 million were urban dwellers and 43.35 million were rural migrant workers.Additional figures showed that unemployment insurance covered 127 million people while those carrying work injury insurance reached 149 million. Lastly, maternity insurance covered 109 million women.
