For an outgoing, two-term Republican governor who only two years ago won the Ohio presidential primary, a final state GOP fundraiser should be almost a victory lap, a chance to reflect on the last eight years. But when the GOP faithful gather in Columbus on Friday, Gov. John Kasich won't be there. That is due in large part to the fact that the guest of honor will be the man who has emerged as Kasich's main political rival, President Donald Trump.Kasich was one of the few Republicans not to endorse Trump in 2016 general election and has remained one of his staunchest policy critics since Trump took office. Beyond that, control of the state party has shifted away from Kasich since Trump's victory with the replacement of party chair, Kasich ally Matt Borges, with Trump supporter Jane Timken.Just last week, Trump's Ohio Campaign Manager and now Co-chair of the RNC Bob Paduchik wrote a blistering op-ed critical of Kasich's attacks on Trump."President Trump is now coming into John Kasich's territory and ruining his farewell party," Political Analyst Dr. Tom Sutton of Baldwin Wallace University said,The Trump Ohio swing Sutton said is also evident on the party's fall ticket, noting that Trump ally Rep. Jim Renacci taking the place as the GOP Senate candidate over the more moderate Josh Mandel."We're seeing here very much the same kind of dynamic that we are seeing across the country," Sutton said. Both Kasich and Trump endorsed Troy Balderson in the special election this month to fill the open seat in Congress in Kasich's home 12th District. Balderson eked out a narrow victory over Democrat Danny O'Connor in the heavily Republican district. The two will face off though again in November with that race being called by many a toss-up.In a back and forth on Twitter last week the president saying "the very upopular Governor of Ohio... hurt Troy Balderson's recent win by tamping down enthusiasm." The attack prompted a gif response by Kasich of a laughing Russian President Vladimir Putin. A move that likely sparked the writing of the Paduchik op-ed.After skipping the Republican National Convention in his own state that nominated Trump it should come as no surprise Kasich would opt to skip the Trump led state GOP fundraiser. Other Republican officeholders who may be loyal to Kasich find themselves caught in the middle, Sutton said."You cross the president at your peril. We saw that with Mark Sanford who lost his renomination to be the congressperson from South Carolina, there are some other issues involved in that but he was critical of President Trump. Those that criticize the president have become the outcasts of the party," Sutton said. "And the most prominent voices are either leaving office or when they're running they're facing stiff challenges from other primary opponents who wrap themselves around President Trump's policies and that is the lay of the land right now in the Republican Party." 2972

For most Americans, wearing a mask in public has become part of the daily routine, and in most states, they’re required in indoor spaces.Even though interactions in public settings might be brief, public health experts have recommended wearing masks outside of the household. But what about family gatherings? Should you wear a mask when visiting relatives? Should you even see relatives outside of your household during a pandemic? If you ask Dr. Christopher Murray, the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, he is opting not to see extended relatives amid the pandemic. And looking forward to the holiday season, Murray does not plan on seeing extended relatives.“Personally, in our family, we will not have our family get together,” Murrays said about Thanksgiving. “I am particularly cautious. That would be our strategy. Certainly, we have avoided, on a personal level, we have avoided any indoor exposure to friends or family and have restricted any exposure at all to outdoor interaction where we can maintain 6 feet or more.”On Thursday, Murray’s organization released new projections that indicated that near universal wearing of face coverings outside of the home would save 67,000 American lives.“If you have a gathering of other family members that are not in your household, then yes, you should be wearing a mask or at least eating outdoors and distancing, which becomes very, very difficult in the winter, Murray said. As part of Murray’s projections, an estimated 1,500 Americans will die per day from coronavirus-related illnesses in November with those numbers continuing to rise into the Thanksgiving holiday. But, those figures drops significantly if masks are worn outside of the home.Unlike Murray, Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, he takes a different approach around family. He said on the topic of wearing masks or avoiding interactions with extended family members, it depends on a person’s risk tolerance.“I am very risk tolerant,” Adalja said. “I am an infectious disease physician. I have taken care of people with the coronavirus. Both of my parents are physicians. I don’t take any special precautious with my parents. I don’t think they take any special precautious with me.“I think physicians might be risk tolerant, but I have not changed my behaviors with people I see regularly, other than if they’re telling me they have a fever, and then I might say ‘stay away’ because I don’t want to be quarantined and not be able to work.”Adalja agrees with Murray, however, that the more people that are involved in gatherings, the higher the risk. He said there is no right or wrong answer when deciding on attending an event with family.“When you make decisions on attending things, you have to make a risk calculation based on the fact that this virus is in the community, and that it’s likely to be at any activity with a sizeable number of people,” Adalja said.Adalja agrees, however, that there is a risk in attending family gatherings, and while face coverings are effective, they're not a panacea. While the CDC doesn’t explicitly discourage family gatherings, the organization has issued guidance on family gatherings. The guidelines include holding events outside when possible, keep seating and people six feet apart, and mask wearing when six feet of stance is not possible. The guidance even goes so far to recommend encouraging guests to bring their own silverware. 3521

Former President Barack Obama said Wednesday there are no practical benefits to a bill Republicans are considering to replace the Affordable Care Act.Speaking in New York, Obama said the bill would increase costs and strip coverage from vulnerable Americans."When I see people trying to undo that hard-won progress, for the 50th or 60th time, with bills that will raise costs, reduce coverage and roll back protections for older Americans and people with pre-existing conditions ... it is aggravating," Obama said during an event sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 589

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - In the minutes after a gunman opened fire in a Florida high school, killing 17, frantic students and parents begin flooding 911 with calls. 176

Former Arkansas high school teacher Jessie Lorene Goline, 25, is accused by law enforcement of having sexual relations with four high school students in 2016, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Goline was formally charged on Wednesday with one count of first degree sexual assault, according to online court records. The Democrat-Gazette reported that only one of the four students were under 18 at the time of the encounters. Authorities told the Democrat-Gazette that Goline allegedly had sex with two students she had taken to her apartment on the same day.In the affidavit, Goline believed one of the students was 18 but he was not. Three of the male students were from the Marked Tree School District, and one was from the East Poinsett County School District. They told authorities that they received text messages from Goline, and that their conversations became more sexual over time. Authorities learned of the alleged incidents in April when a parent threatened to “do bodily harm to one of their teachers.” That's when one of the parents came forward. Goline, who was released later on Wednesday, faces a judge in October.  1217
