About 40 percent of babies born in the United States were born to mothers who were not married, in 2015 according to the United Nations. The statistic comes from the UN Population Fund's annual report, which notes that the rate has steadily increased since 1970, when only 10 percent of children were not born to married parents. The trend is consistent with many Western countries — 60 percent of children were born to unmarried parents in the European Union in 2015, an increase from just under 20 percent in1970.The UN notes that while mothers may not waiting for marriage to have children, it's likely that the children are still growing up with two parents. The study notes that in 2010, 1 in 10 European children lived with a single mother, while 1 in 4 in children lived with an unmarried couple. The study also notes that mothers in the United States are waiting longer to have children. According to the UN, the average age of a woman when she gives birth to her first child has risen from about 22 years old in 1970 to about 26 years old in 2014.The study suggests that educated women in developed countries are entering the workforce, but may choose to wait to start a family due to the lack of affordable health care, lack of parental leave or flexible schedules.Read the entire UN study in the window below.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - A fundraising campaign has been started to help an Alpine fire victim who gave up his chance to save his RV to help others.Jesus Mendoza returned home from work late Saturday afternoon to a towering wall of black and orange. Minutes later, fire crews arrived to tell him he had to evacuate."The smoke was really black, looked like an explosion behind the hillside," said Mendoza. For the past few years, he's been living in his RV on a property on Hidden Glen Road. He's been helping his landlord and friend since her husband passed away last year"She let me stay there. Made myself a promise that she comes first," said Mendoza. When it came time to evacuate, Mendoza says he helped his friend find boxes to pack, before helping round up her dog, cat, and 18 chickens from around her house. He then went to the home of a neighbor, who also needed help."She wasn't home. Helped retrieve her valuables, two dogs, and her vehicle," said Mendoza. The 40 minutes he spent helping would cost him. The RV needed gas and a battery, but he ran out of time. He and his landlord evacuated as the flames moved in. The next day, a neighbor sent him a video. Though his friend's home was spared, his RV was burned, along with his belongings. He had only grabbed a few photos of his kids and some clothes from the hamper. Also destroyed: his truck and a 1968 Ford Falcon he was restoring for his son. Remarkably, Mendoza says he's doing fine."Not upset, because I'm here, and those are just things," said Mendoza.Mendoza, who is a tree trimmer, says he is worried about losing all of his tools and climbing equipment. His friends starting a GoFundMe campaign. As of Thursday afternoon, it had raised more than ,700. Mendoza says he's beyond grateful."My mom taught me to treat others with the most respect, and it will come back to me. So thankful," said Mendoza.Mendoza didn't have insurance on the RV since it was not being driven. 1950

He was reportedly hospitalized shortly before the September 26 event at the White House officially nominating Justice Amy Coney Barrett, according to The Hill.A friend told Bloomberg Bailey’s family asked the White House not to publicize his condition, and President Donald Trump has not acknowledged Bailey’s illness.Bailey’s friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the White House official’s and his family’s “medical and healing expenses necessary as a result of Crede's COVID-19 illness and the life-altering results.”In an update posted on December 7, the fundraiser’s organizer, Dawn McCrobie posted a big update on Bailey’s condition.“Crede has recently been released from the ICU and is now at a full-time rehabilitation center where he is focused on gaining strength and learning to live a new normal. Alibaba is spending billions of dollars to take control of one of China's biggest online food delivery services.China's biggest e-commerce company said Monday that it will buy all the outstanding shares it doesn't already hold in Ele.me, a startup whose Chinese name roughly translates to "Hungry?"Alibaba and one of its affiliates already own 43% of Ele.me, according to a company statement. The deal, which values Ele.me at .5 billion including debt, enables Alibaba to bring the startup deeper into its huge web of internet businesses that touch many areas of Chinese' consumers' lives.Tech companies are eager to cash in on China's growing online food delivery market, which is expected to grow 18% to 241 billion yuan ( billion) this year, according to research firm iiMedia.Tencent, China's biggest tech company by market value, has pumped billions of dollars into Meituan-Dianping, another leading delivery startup.Meituan-Dianping enables users to make lunch reservations, order food and buy movie tickets through a single mobile app. A funding round in October valued it at roughly billion, making it one of the most valuable startups in the world.China's largest ride-hailing company, Didi Chuxing, is also on the verge of launching food delivery services in China, according to local media reports.A similar trend is playing out in the United States. Amazon, the company with which Alibaba is most often compared, teamed up with online food delivery company Olo in September in an effort to expand its Amazon Restaurants service. It's a market where the likes of GrubHub and Uber Eats are already important players. For Alibaba, buying Ele.me is part of the e-commerce company's efforts to connect smartphone users with real-world services. Alibaba is already mixing online and offline shopping with its brick-and-mortar grocery store chain, Hema.Alibaba said it will combine Ele.me with its own restaurant review and local services platform Koubei, which means "Word of Mouth."Ele.me and Koubei have overlapping services. But after the takeover, Ele.me will focus on delivering food to people's homes, while Koubei will focus on getting people to buy goods and services online, and pick them up or consume them at physical stores or restaurants. 2273
