Everyone in America, myself included, is devastated by the news of this latest attack in El Paso. Sadly, after each of these tragedies the Senate does nothing. That has got to change.— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) August 3, 2019 245

ENSENADA, Mexico (KGTV) - The family of a man injured in an ATV accident in Mexico is seeking donations to help get him to a hospital in San Diego.Chad Carrico, who works for a pest control company in Seattle, was on a cruise from Seattle to Mexico when he got off for a day in Ensenada in Baja California on October 10. He and a few friends rented ATV’s but his mother, Theresa Carrico, said he hit something and lost control.“He flew over the handles and the ATV rolled on top of him and crushed him,” said Carrico. His liver was severely damaged. He also suffered a punctured lung and had internal bleeding. He underwent surgery at Velmar Hospital and was placed on life support. He also has to undergo daily kidney dialysis. His mother said, he does not have health insurance in the United States but his employer paid the first ,000 payment. On Monday, she said the hospital told them they owe another ,000.Making matters more pressing, on Monday night they learned he was going into septic shock and may also have contracted a dangerous fungus on his nose that could spread to his brain. Treatment for the fungus, they said, was not available at the hospital. The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to accept donations. 1243

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Escondido Union High School District is celebrating a grant renewal of over million to go towards helping students. The ASSETs grant comes from the federal government and helps funds after-school programs and other support services for students and parents. The district has received this funding for the past 10 years and schools have put it to good use.San Pasqual High School has created unique clubs like ukulele, welding, robotics, and mountain biking. The money also funds academic tutoring as well as programs like Drivers Ed.Everything created through the ASSETs grant money is free for students. "I can tell you it has literally transformed the experience for hundreds of students, hundreds," said San Pasqual High School Principal Martin Casas.Up until last week, next year's grant money wasn't a sure thing. Casas says the district worried the money would be cut from the federal budget.ASSETs grant schools like San Pasqual were trying to figure out which programs they'd have to cut if the funding didn't come through. Casas estimates they would have had to cut half of their programs. But now that the funding is secured, schools can look forward to creating even more programs. They'll receive 0,000 each year for the next five years. Some new programs in the works include building skateboards, music production, and mariachi. In addition to San Pasqual High, Orange Glen, Escondido and Valley High Schools will be getting ASSETs funding. The district says over 75 percent of its students qualify for free and reduced lunch, so these programs are vital.  1618

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The dramatic collapse of a tree in front of an Escondido family’s home was caught on camera during a Red Flag Warning Tuesday.Mike and Selene Neumann woke up to howling winds early Tuesday morning at their home on Pico de la Loma.Selene walked out to record video and saw a 60-foot tall tree laying across the yard and the top of their 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster. The tree, an Italian Cypress, mangled the convertible top, shattered the windows, and bent the door. When the Neumanns saw the video from their Ring camera, they were “astounded”.The fallen tree had been in place since the home was built in 1979.Experts checked out other trees on the Neumann’s property and removed a similar Italian Cypress near the uprooted tree. 756

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — San Diego County beaches brings in huge crowds, especially during a sunny Memorial Day weekend. Aside from teaching water safety and rescues, this year, Encinitas lifeguards are busy enforcing the public health order.Everyone loves the beach. But no one likes restrictions, especially on a holiday weekend, celebrating those who sacrificed their lives to get us our freedoms. But times are different now. "We are enforcing," Captain Lary Giles of the Encinitas Marine Safety Center said. RELATED: Restaurants reopen in time for Memorial Day weekend under new guidelinesLike every Memorial Day weekend, the Encinitas Marine Safety team is out in full force. They have summer lifeguard tower staffing. But this year, they also have a special COVID-team and Sheriff's deputies driving up and down the coastline. "There's a lot of educational contact... Several thousand a day from the team," Captain Giles said. The three main points they drill into visitors are: Masks required, keep a 6-foot social distance, and no stopping or gathering. It gets a bit tricky on the city's 4-foot staircases that take beachgoers to the sand. RELATED: What to know: Changes at San Diego restaurants, retail this Memorial Day weekend"Our beach accesses are very tight when you come down the staircases at Grandview, D Street, and Swami's," Captain Giles said. "The lifeguards at the bottom of those accesses there along with signage, are contacting several people throughout the day."10News saw about half the people abiding by the rules. Others chose to ignore them. "Some people think that they're just going to throw their towels down and sunbathe for half an hour," Encinitas resident Larry Durment said. "That just isn't how it's going to roll. Lifeguards are on them within three to five minutes, so they're pretty good about that."RELATED: San Diego hair salons ready to reopen await 'Stage 3' decisionEvery few minutes, lifeguards in the Marine Safety tower would use the loudspeakers to remind folks about what is allowed and what is not.Allowed: Surfing, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, walking and runningProhibited: Gathering, sitting, sunbathing, games, and stationary exercises"As long as we obey the rules, we should be able to keep the beaches open. So let's just do that. That way, we can have fun together," Durment said. RELATED: Businesses pushed to Stage 3 fight to reopen in San DiegoEncinitas lifeguards said their focus is still not to ticket folks. But to educate them about the importance of the regulations. 2555
