SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's next big attraction is on track to open later this spring.Construction on the park's Tidal Twister roller coaster is set to be completed in May of this year, the park said Wednesday. The roller coaster is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind coaster with a figure-8, horizontal design and dueling trains in which riders sit both backward and forward.Tidal Twister will take riders on a journey as if they're riding the tide, accelerating 30 miles an hour, twisting and banking on a figure-8 track, and crossing an opposite facing train in the middle of the attraction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some University City residents are upset over the city's lethal methods to curb the squirrel population at Nobel Athletic Area park. Many see the park as an escape from the neighborhood's concrete jungle. "One of the joys of being here is to watch the wildlife in the morning-- the rabbits and the squirrels especially," resident, Tracy Benson said. But that began to change once Benson started seeing more green boxes on the ground, similar to water irrigation units.RELATED: Chula Vista seeks public input on future bayfront parks in online survey"There is a hole back here, and in this hole is where the bait is placed. So the idea is the animal eats the bait, comes out, and essentially dies," Benson said. The more of these boxes the animal lover saw, the fewer squirrels she ran into on her walks.10News contacted the City of San Diego to get answers. A spokesman explained that the green apparatus is a "bait box." It helps manage what they call an "overabundant squirrel population."The City's Parks and Recreation Department began using them a few years ago to stop the squirrels from damaging their athletic facilities, landscaping, and eroding the hillside. The city adds, if they do not control the squirrel population in this way, the effects go up the food chain. There will be more coyotes and snakes, animals that would be dangerous to park users. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police spent several hours Sunday trying to talk a man down after he climbed Belmont Park's Giant Dipper roller coaster and refused to come down.Police said officers and San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel were called just before 1:30 p.m. to reports of an 18-year-old male who had climbed the amusement park's fence and up to the top of the coaster. SDPD's Psychiatric Emergency Response Team spent several hours trying to talk the man down.The man came down from the roller coaster around 7:45 p.m., before grabbing a tarp and making his way back up. Shortly after 8:30 p.m., he crossed over to a nearby roof. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Red Cross Volunteers are stepping up to help the many communities at risk of Hurricane Dorian's wrath.So far 20 volunteers have been assigned to the disaster, 18 will be on the ground, and two are working remotely.John Stone is deploying Tuesday evening to South Carolina, he's responded to over 20 disasters."You catch the bug, I mean you're helping people recover from a natural disaster, every disaster is different," said Stone. Stone says this deployment is more personal; his daughter lives in Charleston."I emphasize with her to have a plan, be ready to go, it's my grandchildren you're dealing with, I want you to be safe," said Stone.At any moment, the local Red Cross could be asked to send more volunteers. On Monday night, more than 12,200 people stayed in 171 Red Cross and community evacuation shelters in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
