SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego restaurant group is turning to an old trend to try to make it through the latest shutdown order.The order, which went into effect Monday, relegated restaurants to takeout and delivery only, decimating their bottom line and forcing them to cut jobs and reduce hours."Right now the way it's been, it's not profitable," said Alex Navarrete, general manager of Karina's restaurant group. "We're giving everybody one shifts, two shifts, but what is that going to do?"Karina's restaurant group has nine establishments around the county. Prior to the pandemic, it had dozens of workers at each location. Now, it has four workers on the clock at anytime at each. "They all want to work, I just don't have hours now, since we're only doing takeout," Navarrete said. Navarette is now trying to go above and beyond for his company and his employees - even as his options are limited. Four of the group's restaurants -- two in the Otay Ranch mall, and others in Chula Vista and La Jolla -- will try to take advantage of their parking lots. They're essentially turning into car hops, where patrons get their food delivered to their cars and eat in the parking lot. "This would be a perfect time to get that cobwebs off the motor home and bring it out, bring the family out," he said. Curbside pickup for restaurant food is nothing new, but the Karina's group is eyeing making it more festive, with potentiality live music or a DJ outdoors at its two restaurants in the Otay Ranch Mall - Karina's Mexican Seafood and Savoie Italian Eatery. Navaraette said by staying and eating in the car, guests could order their food in courses, so the tacos and other entrees don't get soggy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An apologetic teenage girl explained how she crashed her mother’s car into her neighbor’s garage in Encanto Friday.13-year-old Akasha Alexander had been taught how to start the BMW in the morning to help her mother. On Friday, the car was parked a big too close to the edge of a steep hill.The girl pulled the clutch and the car took off, crashing through the neighbor’s fence, clipping a water line, and ending up in the garage.“I see the fence go down and i'm like, oh no, and then all I see is boom,” said Alexander.Neighbor Melvin Glover’s daughter and grandchildren are visiting him for Easter. They said the impact shook the Glover home and frightened them all.The car was towed from the home.Alexander said she plans to bake Glover a red velvet cake. 784

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Southern California athlete said his life was changed forever from a stem cell product he said came from a San Diego company. “It’s been tough. And it’s still tough,” said Alex Reyes. Team 10 interviewed Reyes at a San Bernardino park, where he took a few moments to play with his young children. Those are the moments he treasures because last year, even holding his kids was something he could not do. “I couldn’t walk for about three and a half to four weeks. I was on a bedpan. It was one of the hardest things I had to go through in my life,” Reyes said.This is coming from a man used to taking punches. He has several accomplishments in mixed martial arts, including King of the Cage Junior Welterweight and Lightweight Champion, as well as the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Absolute Purple Belt Champion. Reyes was signed to the UFC back in September of 2017 to compete in the Lightweight Division. In the UFC, he was known as the Executioner. “It was just the beginning for me,” Reyes said.He started doing stem cell injections last year to help with an old back injury. “It was kind of nagging,” he told Team 10.The first one he tried went well. “It helps regenerate the tissue… there was improvement, and I felt better,” he said. The second time, Reyes said he went to a different clinic in Las Vegas in June 2018. According to his lawsuit, the product used was from the ReGen Series?, developed and manufactured by Genetech. Genetech is not related to the biotechnology company Genentech.“After I got the injection a few days later, I couldn’t walk anymore, I couldn’t stand I couldn’t sit, I couldn’t move. The court documents show Health Departments in Texas and Florida received notification of bacteria in patients who received those injections. Genetech, which used to operate at a building on Bunker Hill Street on the edge of Pacific Beach, is now closed. However, federal regulators are currently looking into the company’s operations. A letter issued late last year by the Federal Drug Administration warned Genetech about several violations with “potential serious risks to patients.” The FDA and Centers for Disease Control are aware of at least 12 patients who received Genetech products. According to the FDA warning issued in late 2018, the federal agencies “have received numerous reports of safety issues including those involving microbial contamination… and subsequently became ill due to blood and other infections caused by bacteria, including Escherichia coli (E. coli).”“I was really terrified,” said Alex’s wife, Rosalie Reyes. “I didn’t know what to think. Is he dying? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A UC San Diego graduate is using a technology he created as a student to help avoid crowds during the pandemic. Nic Halverson launched Waitz in 2017, an application that measures and publishes how busy a space is at any given time.Using "Occuspace" sensors plugged into wall outlets, the app uses Bluetooth and WiFi signals to calculate how many people are in the room at a time. Halverson said it does not take any personal data and solely looks at how many devices are present.He said he first thought of the idea as a student who came from a small town of 3,000 people, then was overwhelmed by the crowds of San Diego.“I just turned to my friend and I was like, ‘man I wish we knew how busy every floor was before we came here,’ and that’s when kinda the light bulb went off,” he said.At UCSD currently, the application is used in two libraries, two gyms, and the main food court area. As of the end of August, about a dozen schools across the country will be signed up for the technology, with an anticipated number of close to 60 schools by the spring semester.While it’s useful for students trying to find a study spot, 2020 has changed the need.“We and other people realize that people care about how crowded places are now more than ever and it kinda transformed from being that was just convenient to have, it was nice to know how busy a place was before you went, to something that was more a matter of health and safety,” he said.While UCSD has not announced any plans to incorporate the app in any official coronavirus plan once students return to campus, the technology will still remain live.Halverson said they are currently talking to ski resorts to use the app to publish wait times for ski lines or restaurants, and he hopes it will continue to grow from there.“My dream is one day, you’ll be able to look and see how busy every Starbucks or Chipotle is right there on your phone,” he said. 1935
