We met State Senate President Pro-Tem Toni Atkins at a coastal event for research on climate change. Atkins says it’s everyday attention to universal issues like this that further acceptance of openly gay leaders like her. Christine Kehoe was San Diego’s first openly gay politician. She was elected to the San Diego City Council in 1993 and went on to serve more than a decade in the State Assembly and Senate. “The fact is there are a lot of people who blazed trails to allow me to serve; to allow Toni Atkins, Jen Campbell, Georgette Gomez, Chris Ward….our cup really runneth over in San Diego." Assembly member Todd Gloria said no one should hide who they are. "I think I'm a better elected official because of who I am. I think more importantly, the people of San Diego want to know who their elected officials are." 1015

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family and friends of a disabled Clairemont woman are making a plea for the arrest of a hit-and-run driver who left her with serious injuries.Last week, a beaming Delores Odom appeared at a surprise party for her 59th birthday. One of the attendees was her friend and neighbor Maritza Gates. "She was so happy that day. It breaks my heart to see her in the hospital now in so much pain," said Gates. On Saturday just before 6:30 p.m., Odom decided to take a walk to grab dinner. She was crossing westbound on Genesee Avenue in the south crosswalk when she was hit by a vehicle that had been going westbound on Derrick Drive and made a left turn to southbound Genesee Avenue, according to police.Odom's daughter Brianna says her mother broke her back in two places. Odom has feeling in her toes, but still faces possible paralysis and requires complicated back surgery. Her recovery and rehabilitation is made more challenging because of a decades-old diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. "There's a special place for people like that. I don't understand how you could hurt someone and then leave them. My mom is one of the nicest people ever. You don't know someone's story when you leave them to die on the street," she said.Police say there is no description of the vehicle and are looking for witnesses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members of military members on the USS Bonhomme Richard set up a lemonade stand over the weekend to raise money for the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society.Becca Kofonow and her three children set up shop on the Siver Strand Saturday morning. It's been a hard week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Governor Gavin Newsom and the state Attorney General California officials served a cease-and-desist letter to two San Diego strip clubs operating amid the state's stay-at-home order.The letter to the attorneys representing Pacers Showgirls and Cheetahs Gentleman's Club said the state has been informed the locations are operating indoors despite restrictions forcing restaurants to offer only take-out and delivery services under the order.The letter was sent by state Attorney General Xavier Becerra on behalf of Governor Gavin Newsom and the Department of Public Health."We are informed and believe that MIDWAY AND F-12 are continuing to conduct indoor operations notwithstanding the Regional Stay at Home Order currently in effect in the County of San Diego. Such indoor operations violate the terms of the Regional Stay at Home Order, which permits restaurants, such as those run by MIDWAY AND F-12, to operate for take-out and delivery services only," the letter said.RELATED: San Diego County fights ruling protecting strip clubs from stay-at-home ordersThe letter says the two groups representing the strip clubs, Midway Venture LLC and F-12 Entertainment Group Inc., must reply by Saturday at 5 p.m. that they will comply with the order or they could face legal action."To protect the health care delivery system of Southern California from being overwhelmed, the State Health Officer determined that immediate, aggressive nonpharmaceutical interventions must be implemented," the letter states. Areas including Julian, Descanso, Pine Valley, and Mt. Laguna saw between two and 12 inches of snow Friday, depending on elevation.Saturday, chain requirements were canceled for State route 79 just north of Interstate 8 to Sr-78/Sr-79 junction in Julian, and on Sr-78 from Banner Grade to Sr-78/Sr-79 junction in Santa Ysabel. Visitors quickly arrived in Julian Saturday, where streets were clear of snow but packed with cars:Sunrise Highway, from Pine Valley to Mt. Laguna, was scheduled to reopen on the southside between Old Highway 80 in Pine Valley to Mile post 27 at 12 p.m., though chains will be required past the 5,000 elevation level.
